Lignin produced from beech wood by Organosolv process: A potential chemical resource

  • In the last decade a world-wide growing interest could be observed in exploring wood and other biomass materials as renewable sources of so-called building block chemicals. Biorefinery Road Maps have been submitted (in the U.S., Europe, Germany) including special arrangements to achieve sustainable development in order to implement the Rio Declaration. These road maps strongly recommend the utilization of renewable feedstocks, in particular lignocelluloses and carbohydrates, as a source for novel innovative marketable products. With the broad development of biorefinery processing of lignocellulose, in particular for the production of second generation biofuels, massive amounts of lignin will be generated. [1]
