Dual Dynamics (DD) is a mathematical model of a behavior control system for mobile autonomous robots. Behaviors are specified through differential equations; forming a global dynamical system made of behavior subsystems which interact in a number of ways. DD models can be directly compiled into executable code. The article (i) explains the model; (ii) sketches the Dual Dynamics Designer (DDD) environment that we use for the design; simulation; implementation and documentation; and (iii) illustrates our approach with the example of kicking a moving ball into a goal.
CASTLE is a co-design platform developed at GMD SET institute. It provides a number of design tools for configuring application specific design flows. This paper presents a walk through the CASTLE co-design environment, following the design flow of a video processing system. The design methodology and the tool usage for this real life example are described, as seen from a designers point of view. The design flow starts with a C/C++ program and gradually derives a register-transfer level description of a processor hardware, as well as the corresponding compiler for generating the processor opcode. The main results of each design step are presented and the usage of the CASTLE tools at each step is explained.
Co-design is concerned with the joint design of hardware and software making up an embedded computer system [Wol94]. A top down design flow for an embedded system begins with a system specification. If it is executable, it may be used for simulation, system verification or to identify algorithmical bottlenecks. In contrast to other chapters of this book, the specification is not developed in this case study, rather it is given from the beginning. Furthermore we are not concerned with partitioning or synthesis of dedicated HW. Instead we focus on the problem how to find an off-the-shelf micro-controller which implements the desired functionality and meets all specification constraints. If feasible, this is usually much cheaper then using dedicated hardware. This chapter will answer the question of feasibility for a real life problem from automobile industry.
The growing number of production enterprises that use software systems to support the production planning and control (PPC-systems and limited life-time of these systems imply that many enterprises have to decide whether or not an existing PPC-system is worthwhile reengineering. The factores that have an impact on this decision are non-quantifiable. Since the fuzzy-set-theory provides facilities to deal with non-quantifiable variables, a decision-tool based upon a fuzzy model was conceived.

This paper describes a codesign environment based on the WWW (World Wide Web) and its implementation. Tool invocations and their respective results are linked using hypertext documents. We show how to configure a WWW browser for spawning design tools and how frequent tasks like documentation generation and retrieval are facilitated. The design flow can be adopted to the given application very easily. In addition we introduce the concept of a work flow called ‘design by documentation’. A WWW link to the results is given and experience using it in a codesign project is described.

Design of an Active Multispectral SWIR Camera System for Skin Detection and Face Verification
(2016)
Biometric face recognition is becoming more frequently used in different application scenarios. However, spoofing attacks with facial disguises are still a serious problem for state of the art face recognition algorithms. This work proposes an approach to face verification based on spectral signatures of material surfaces in the short wave infrared (SWIR) range. They allow distinguishing authentic human skin reliably from other materials, independent of the skin type. We present the design of an active SWIR imaging system that acquires four-band multispectral image stacks in real-time. The system uses pulsed small band illumination, which allows for fast image acquisition and high spectral resolution and renders it widely independent of ambient light. After extracting the spectral signatures from the acquired images, detected faces can be verified or rejected by classifying the material as "skin" or "no-skin". The approach is extensively evaluated with respect to both acquisition and classification performance. In addition, we present a database containing RGB and multispectral SWIR face images, as well as spectrometer measurements of a variety of subjects, which is used to evaluate our approach and will be made available to the research community by the time this work is published.
Sweet sorghum (Sorghum bicolor (L.) moench), a crop that is grown by subsistence farmers in Zimbabwe was used to extract silica gel in order to assess its possible use as a raw material for the production of silica-based products. The gel was prepared from sodium silicate extracted from sweet sorghum bagasse ash by sodium hydroxide leaching. Results show that maximum yield can be obtained at pH 5 and with 3 M sodium concentration. The silica gel prepared at optimum pH 5 had a bulk density of 0.5626 g/cm3 and anestimated porosity of 71.87%. Silica gel aged over 10 h had improved moisture adsorption properties. X-ray fluorescence (XRF) determinations show that the silica content in the ash is 40.1%. Characterization of sweet sorghum ash and silica gels produced at pH 5, 7 and 8.5 by Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy gave absorption bands similar to those reported by other researchers.Transmission electron micrographs show that silica prepared under optimum conditions is amorphous and consisted of irregular particles. Sweet sorghum proved to be a potential low cost raw material for the production of silica gel.

[Context and motivation] Communication in distributed software development is usually supported by issue tracking systems. Within these systems, most of the communication is stored as unstructured natural language text. The natural language text, however, contains much information with respect to requirements management, e.g. discussion, clarification and prioritization of features, bugs, and refactorings. [Question] This paper investigates the information stored in the issue tracking systems of four different open-source projects. It categorizes the text and reports on the distribution of issue types and information types. [Principal ideas/results] A manual analysis of 80 issues, using a grounded approach, is conducted to derive a taxonomy of issue types and information types. Subsequently, the taxonomy is used as a codebook, to manually categorize and structure the text in another 120 issues. [Contribution] The first contribution of this paper is the taxonomy of issue and information types and the second contribution is an in-depth analysis of the natural language data and the communication. This analysis showed, for example, that information with respect to prioritization and scheduling can be found in natural language data, whether the ITS supports such tasks in a structured way or not.
Comparison of the subject-oriented and the Petri net based approach for business process automation
(2015)
The subject-oriented modelling approach [5] significally differs from the classic Petri net based approach of many business process modeling languages like EPC [9], Business Process Model and Notation (BPMN) [11], and also Yet Another Workflow Language (YAWL) [10]. In this work, we compare the two approaches by modeling a case study called "Procure to Pay"[3], a typical business process where some equipment for a construction site is rented and finally paid. The case study is not only modelled but also automated using the Metasonic Suite for the subject-oriented and YAWL for the Petri net based approach.
This book presents bond graph model-based fault detection with a focus on hybrid system models. The book addresses model design, simulation, control and model-based fault diagnosis of multidisciplinary engineering systems. The text beings with a brief survey of the state-of-the-art, then focuses on hybrid systems. The author then uses different bond graph approaches throughout the text and provides case studies.
Perception is one of the most important cognitive capabilities of an entity since it determines how an entity perceives its environment. The presented work focuses on providing cost efficient but realistic perceptual processes for intelligent virtual agents (IVAs) or NPCs with the goal of providing a sound information basis for the entities' decision making processes. In addition, an agent-central perception process should rovide a common interface for developers to retrieve data from the IVAs' environment. The overall process is evaluated by applying it to a scenario demonstrating its benefits. The evaluation indicates, that such a realistically simulated perception process provides a powerful instrument to enhance the (perceived) realism of an IVA's simulated behavior.
Exposure to microgravity conditions causes cardiovascular deconditioning in astronauts during spaceflight. Until now, no specific drugs are available for countermeasure, since the underlying mechanism is largely unknown. Endothelial cells (ECs) and smooth muscle cells (SMCs) play key roles in various vascular functions, many of which are regulated by purinergic 2 (P2) receptors. However, their function in ECs and SMCs under microgravity conditions is still unclear. In this study, primary ECs and SMCs were isolated from bovine aorta and verified with specific markers. We show for the first time that the P2 receptor expression pattern is altered in ECs and SMCs after 24 h exposure to simulated microgravity using a clinostat. However, conditioned medium compensates this change in specific P2 receptors, for example, P2X7. Notably, P2 receptors such as P2X7 might be the important players during the paracrine interaction. Additionally, ECs and SMCs secreted different cytokines under simulated microgravity, leading into a pathogenic proliferation and migration. In conclusion, our data indicate P2 receptors might be important players responding to gravity changes in ECs and SMCs. Since some artificial P2 receptor ligands are applied as drugs, it is reasonable to assume that they might be promising candidates against cardiovascular deconditioning in the future.
The analytical pyrolysis technique hyphenated to gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS) has extended the range of possible tools for the characterization of synthetic polymers and copolymers. Pyrolysis involves thermal fragmentation of the analytical sample at temperatures of 500–1400 °C. In the presence of an inert gas, reproducible decomposition products characteristic for the original polymer or copolymer sample are formed. The pyrolysis products are chromatographically separated using a fused-silica capillary column and are subsequently identified by interpretation of the obtained mass spectra or by using mass spectra libraries. The analytical technique eliminates the need for pretreatment by performing analyses directly on the solid or liquid polymer sample. In this article, application examples of analytical pyrolysis hyphenated to GC–MS for the identification of different polymeric materials in the plastic and automotive industry, dentistry, and occupational safety are demonstrated. For the first time, results of identification of commercial light-curing dental filling material and a car wrapping foil by pyrolysis–GC–MS are presented.
It has become increasingly clear that caspases, far from being merely cell death effectors, have a much wider range of functions within the cell. These functions are as diverse as signal transduction and cytoskeletal remodeling, and caspases are now known to have an essential role in cell proliferation, migration, and differentiation. There is also evidence that apoptotic cells themselves can direct the behavior of nearby cells through the caspase-dependent secretion of paracrine signaling factors. In some processes, including the differentiation of skeletal muscle myoblasts, both caspase activation in differentiating cells as well as signaling from apoptotic cells has been reported. Here, we review the non-apoptotic outcomes of caspase activity in a range of different model systems and attempt to integrate this knowledge.
