In this paper, the performance evaluation of Frequency Modulated Chaotic On-Off Keying (FM-COOK) in AWGN, Rayleigh and Rician fading channels is given. The simulation results show that an improvement in BER can be gained by incorporating the FM modulation with COOK for SNR values less than 10dB in AWGN case and less than 6dB for Rayleigh and Rician fading channels.
A system that interacts with its environment can be much more robust if it is able to reason about the faults that occur in its environment, despite perfect functioning of its internal components. For robots, which interact with the same environment as human beings, this robustness can be obtained by incorporating human-like reasoning abilities in them. In this work we use naive physics to enable reasoning about external faults in robots. We propose an approach for diagnosing external faults that uses qualitative reasoning on naive physics concepts for diagnosis. These concepts are mainly individual properties of objects that define their state qualitatively. The reasoning process uses physical laws to generate possible states of the concerned object(s), which could result into a detected external fault. Since effective reasoning about any external fault requires the information of relevant properties and physical laws, we associate different properties and laws to different types of faults which can be detected by a robot. The underlying ontology of this association is proposed on the basis of studies conducted (by other researchers) on reasoning of physics novices about everyday physical phenomena. We also formalize some definitions of properties of objects into a small framework represented in First-Order logic. These definitions represent naive concepts behind the properties and are intended to be independent from objects and circumstances. The definitions in the framework illustrates our proposal of using different biased definitions of properties for different types of faults. In this work, we also present a brief review of important contributions in the area of naive/qualitative physics. These reviews help in understanding the limitations of naive/qualitative physics in general. We also apply our approach to simple scenarios to asses its limitations in particular. Since this work was done independent of any particular real robotic system, it can be seen as a theoretical proof of the concept of usefulness of naive physics for external fault reasoning in robotics.
Despite perfect functioning of its internal components, a robot can be unsuccessful in performing its tasks because of unforeseen situations. These situations occur when the behavior of the objects in the robot’s environment deviates from its expected values. For robots, such deviations are exhibited in the form of unknown external faults which prohibit them from performing their tasks successfully. In this work we propose to use naive physics knowledge to reason about such faults in the robotics domain. We propose an approach that uses naive physics concepts to find information about the situations which result in a detected unknown fault. The naive physics knowledge is represented by the physical properties of objects which are formalized in a logical framework. The proposed approach applies a qualitative version of physical laws to these properties for reasoning about the detected fault. By interpreting the reasoning results the robot finds the information about the situations which can cause the fault. We apply the proposed approach to the scenarios in which a robot performs manipulation tasks of picking and placing objects. Results of this application show that naive physics holds great promise for reasoning about unknown ex- ternal faults in robotics.
The development of pulmonary edema can be considered as a combination of alveolar flooding via increased fluid filtration, impaired alveolar-capillary barrier integrity, and disturbed resolution due to decreased alveolar fluid clearance. An important mechanism regulating alveolar fluid clearance is sodium transport across the alveolar epithelium. Transepithelial sodium transport is largely dependent on the activity of sodium channels in alveolar epithelial cells. This paper describes how sodium channels contribute to alveolar fluid clearance under physiological conditions and how deregulation of sodium channel activity might contribute to the pathogenesis of lung diseases associated with pulmonary edema. Furthermore, sodium channels as putative molecular targets for the treatment of pulmonary edema are discussed.
Nitric oxide (NO) is an important regulator of Na+ reabsorption by pulmonary epithelial cells and therefore of alveolar fluid clearance. The mechanisms by which NO affects epithelial ion transport are poorly understood and vary from model to model. In this study, the effects of NO on sodium reabsorption by H441 cell monolayers were studied in an Ussing chamber. Two NO donors, (Z)-1-[N-(3-aminopropyl)-N-(n-propyl) amino]diazen-1-ium-1,2-diolate and diethylammonium(Z)-1-(N, N-diethylamino) diazen-1-ium-1,2-diolate, rapidly, reversibly, and dose-dependently reduced amiloride-sensitive, short-circuit currents across H441 cell monolayers. This effect was neutralized by the NO scavenger hemoglobin and was not observed with inactive NO donors. The effects of NO were not blocked by 8-bromoguanosine-3',5'-cyclic monophosphate or by soluble guanylate cyclase inhibitors (methylene blue and 1H-[1,2,4] oxadiazolo[4,3-a]quinoxalin-1-one) and were therefore independent of soluble guanylate cyclase signaling. NO targeted apical, highly selective, amiloride-sensitive Na+ channels in basolaterally permeabilized H441 cell monolayers. NO had no effect on the activity of the human epithelial sodium channel heterologously expressed in Xenopus oocytes. NO decreased Na+/K+-ATPase activity in apically permeabilized H441 cell monolayers. The inhibition of Na+/K+-ATPase activity by NO was reversed by mercury and was mimicked by N-ethylmaleimide, which are agents that reverse and mimic, respectively, the reaction of NO with thiol groups. Consistent with these data, S-NO groups were detected on the Na+/K+-ATPase a subunit in response to NO-donor application, using a biotin-switch approach coupled to a Western blot. These data demonstrate that, in the H441 cell model, NO impairs Na+ reabsorption by interfering with the activity of highly selective Na+ channels and the Na+/K+-ATPase.
This study presents the findings of a quantitative study on the use of Open Educational Resources (OER) and Open Educational Practices (OEP) in Higher Education and Adult Learning Institutions. The study is based on the results of an online survey targeted at four educational roles: educational policy makers; institutional policy makers/managers; educational professionals; and learners. The report encompasses five chapters and four annexes. Chapter I presents the survey and Chapter II discloses the main research questions and models. Chapter III characterises the universe of respondents. Chapter IV advances with a detailed survey analysis including an overview of key statistical data. Finally, Chapter V provides an exploratory in-depth analysis of some key issues: representations, attitudes and uses of OEP. The table of contents and the complete list of diagrams and tables can be found at the end of the report.
Nowadays, we input text not only on stationary devices, but also on handheld devices while walking, driving, or commuting. Text entry on the move, which we term as nomadic text entry, is generally slower. This is partially due to the need for users to move their visual focus from the device to their surroundings for navigational purposes and back. To investigate if better feedback about users' surroundings on the device can improve performance, we present a number of new and existing feedback systems: textual, visual, textual & visual, and textual & visual via translucent keyboard. Experimental comparisons between the conventional and these techniques established that increased ambient awareness for mobile users enhances nomadic text entry performance. Results showed that the textual and the textual & visual via translucent keyboard conditions increased text entry speed by 14% and 11%, respectively, and reduced the error rate by 13% compared to the regular technique. The two methods also significantly reduced the number of collisions with obstacles.
Die Komplexität der Entscheidungen im Fuhrparkmanagement hat in der jüngeren Vergangenheit deutlich zugenommen. Damit steigen die Anforderungen an den Fuhrparkcontroller, den Fuhrparkleiter mit entscheidungsrelevanten Informationen im Sinne eines internen Dienstleisters zu unterstützen. Das Dynamic Carbon Accounting bietet die Möglichkeit, strategische, strukturelle und kulturelle Anforderungen an das Fuhrparkcontrolling durch die Kombination von Prozesskostenrechnung, Target Costing, Life Cycle Costing und den Ideen des Carbon Accountings instrumentell zu berücksichtigen. Je nach Bedeutung der Nachhaltigkeit für den Unternehmenserfolg können die damit verbundenen Auszahlungen noch differenzierter aufgenommen werden. So ist es denkbar, externe Auszahlungen der Emissionen von NO(ind x), Nichtmethan-Kohlenwasserstoffen, Partikeln, Lärm und Unfällen in die Rechnung zu integrieren. Damit wird je Fahrzeug der Beitrag zur Erreichung von Emissionszielen transparent gemacht und ist durch eine zielgerichtete Integration in den Controllingprozess des Unternehmens plan- und steuerbar. Da von einer zukünftig zunehmenden Komplexität des wirtschaftlichen Handelns auszugehen ist, wird sich der praktische Bedarf an dynamischen, marktorientierten Instrumenten im Controlling generell und speziell im Fuhrparkcontrolling weiter erhöhen.
Der I. Senat des BFH hat dem Großen Senat mit Beschluss vom 7.4.2010 die Frage vorgelegt, ob der subjektive Fehlerbegriff zwar in Bezug auf nach Bilanzaufstellung neu bekanntgewordene Tatsachen beizubehalten, in Bezug auf bessere Rechtserkenntnisse nach Bilanzaufstellung aber aufzugeben ist. Der Große Senat hat insoweit eine schwierige Entscheidung zu treffen, da sich materielles Bilanzsteuerrecht, Verfahrensrecht und Handelsrecht bei dieser Frage überlagern. hat schon 1991 von einem heillosen und verworrenen Labyrinth gesprochen, in dem es schwer falle, die Prinzipien zu erkennen. Zusätzlich hat der Große Senat unter dem Gesichtspunkt der Kontinuität der Rechtsprechung und der Rechtssicherheit abzuwägen, ob es gerechtfertigt ist, eine seit 50 Jahren bestehende Rechtsprechung aufzugeben. Die Entscheidung des Großen Senats hat sich durch den Präsidentenwechsel beim BFH verzögert, ist aber nunmehr in nächster Zeit zu erwarten.
This thesis work presents the implementation and validation of image processing problems in hardware to estimate the performance and precision gain. It compares the implementation for the addressed problem on a Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) with a software implementation for a General Purpose Processor (GPP) architecture. For both solutions the implementation costs for their development is an important aspect in the validation. The analysis of the flexibility and extendability that can be achieved by a modular implementation for the FPGA design was another major aspect. This work is based upon approaches from previous work, which included the detection of Binary Large OBjects (BLOBs) in static images and continuous video streams [13, 15]. One addressed problem of this work is the tracking of the detected BLOBs in continuous image material. This has been implemented for the FPGA platform and the GPP architecture. Both approaches have been compared with respect to performance and precision. This research project is motivated by the MI6 project of the Computer Vision research group, which is located at the Bonn-Rhein-Sieg University of Applied Sciences. The intent of the MI6 project is the tracking of a user in an immersive environment. The proposed solution is to attach a light emitting device to the user for tracking the created light dots on the projection surface of the immersive environment. Having the center points of those light dots would allow the estimation of the user’s position and orientation. One major issue that makes Computer Vision problems computationally expensive is the high amount of data that has to be processed in real-time. Therefore, one major target for the implementation was to get a processing speed of more than 30 frames per second. This would allow the system to realize feedback to the user in a response time which is faster than the human visual perception. One problem that comes with the idea of using a light emitting device to represent the user, is the precision error. Dependent on the resolution of the tracked projection surface of the immersive environment, a pixel might have a size in cm2. Having a precision error of only a few pixels, might lead to an offset in the estimated user’s position of several cm. In this research work the development and validation of a detection and tracking system for BLOBs on a Cyclone II FPGA from Altera has been realized. The system supports different input devices for the image acquisition and can perform detection and tracking for five to eight BLOBs. A further extension of the design has been evaluated and is possible with some constraints. Additional modules for compressing the image data based on run-length encoding and sub-pixel precision for the computed BLOB center-points have been designed. For the comparison of the FPGA approach for BLOB tracking a similar implementation in software using a multi-threaded approach has been realized. The system can transmit the detection or tracking results on two available communication interfaces, USB and RS232. The analysis of the hardware solution showed a similar precision for the BLOB detection and tracking as the software approach. One problem is the strong increase of the allocated resources when extending the system to process more BLOBs. With one of the applied target platforms, the DE2-70 board from Altera, the BLOB detection could be extended to process up to thirty BLOBs. The implementation of the tracking approach in hardware required much more effort than the software solution. The design of high level problems in hardware for this case are more expensive than the software implementation. The search and match steps in the tracking approach could be realized more efficiently and reliably in software. The additional pre-processing modules for sub-pixel precision and run-length-encoding helped to increase the system’s performance and precision.
Software offshoring has been established as an important business strategy over the last decade. While research on such forms of Global Software Development (GSD) has mainly focused on the situation of large enterprises, small enterprises are increasingly engaging in offshoring, too. Representing the biggest share of the German software industry, small companies are known to be important innovators and market pioneers. They often regard their flexibility and customer-orientation as core competitive advantages. Unlike large corporations, their small size allows them to adopt software development approaches that are characterized by a high agility and flat hierarchies. At the same time, their distinct strategies make it unlikely that they can simply adopt management strategies that were developed for larger companies.
Flexible development approaches like the ones preferred by small corporations have proven to be problematic in the context of offshoring, as their strong dependency on constant communication is strongly affected by the various barriers of international cooperation between companies. Cooperating closely over companies’ borders in different time zones and in culturally diverse teams poses complex obstacles for flexible management approaches. It is still a matter of discussion in fields like Software Engineering and Computer Supported Cooperative Work how these obstacles can be tackled and how they affect companies in the long term. Hence, it is agreed that we need a more detailed understanding of distributed software development practices in order to come to feasible technological and organizational solutions.
This dissertation presents results from two ethnographically-informed case studies of software offshoring in small German enterprises. By adopting Anselm Strauss’ concept of articulation work, we want to deepen the understanding of managing distributed software development in flexible, customer-oriented organizations. In doing so, we show how practices of coordinating inter-organizational software development are closely related to aspects of organizational learning in small enterprises. By means of interviews with developers and project managers from both parties of the cooperation, we do not only take into account the multiple perspectives of the cooperation, but also include the socio-cultural background of international software development projects into our analysis.
This paper picks up on one of the ways reported in the literature to represent hybrid models of engineering systems by bond graphs with static causalities. The representation of a switching device by means of a modulated transformer (MTF) controlled by a Boolean variable in conjunction with a resistor has been used so far to build a model for simulation. In this paper, it is shown that it can also constitute an approach to bond graph based quantitative fault detection and isolation in hybrid system models. Advantages are that Analytical Redundancy Relations (ARRs) do not need to be derived again after a switch state has changed. ARRs obtained from the bond graph are valid for all system modes. Furthermore, no adaption of the standard sequential causality assignment procedure (SCAP) with respect to fault detection and isolation (FDI) is needed.

The roadmap for quality and innovation through open educational practices has been conceived as a number of steps, a conceptual document, which can be used by organisations, leaners or professionals in order to improve their open educational practices. After the development of the core concept of the OPAL project, the guidelines for OEP, it became clear that these guidelines, would have to play an important part on the roadmap exercise, because they represent the very essence of how to foster and stimulate open educational practices. The roadmap therefore is meant to be an instrument, a tool which helps the different stakeholders to use the guidelines for their own context and purpose.
The small and remote households in Northern regions demand thermal energy rather than electricity. Wind turbine in such places can be used to convert wind energy into thermal energy directly using a heat generator based on the principle of the Joule machine. The heat generator driven by a wind turbine can reduce the cost of energy for heating system. However the optimal performance of the system depends on the torque-speed characteristics of the wind turbine and the heat generator. To achieve maximum efficiency of operation both characteristics should be matched. In the article the condition of optimal performance is developed and an example of the system operating at maximum efficiency is simulated.

Die vorliegende Arbeit wird im Rahmen eines Projektes des Fraunhofer Instituts IAIS erstellt. Hier geht es um die Entwicklung eines neuen 3D-Laserscanners. Basierend auf diesem 3D-Laserscanner soll eine Sicherheits-Anwendung realisiert werden. Für eine Softwarekomponente - die Segmentierung von 3D-Daten - wird der Stand der Forschung untersucht und es werden drei Segmentierungs-Verfahren ausgewählt und implementiert. Der RANSAC-Algorithmus wird zur Detektion von Ebenen eingesetzt. In dieser Arbeit wird er um ein Abbruchkriterium erweitert, welches die Gesamtlaufzeit bei der Segmentierung von mehreren Ebenen verringert.
Having multiple talkers on a bus system rises the bandwidth on this bus. To monitor the communication on a bus, tools that constantly read the bus are needed. This report shows an implementation of a monitoring system for the CAN bus utilizing the Altera DE2 development board. The Biomedical Institute of the University of New Brunswick is currently developing together with different partners a prosthetic limb device, the UNB hand. Communication in this device is done via two CAN buses, which operate at a bit-rate of 1 Mbit/s. The developed monitoring system has been completely designed in Verilog HDL. It monitors the CAN bus in real-time and allows monitoring of different modules as well as of the overall load. The calculated data is displayed on the built-in LCD and also transmitted via UART to a PC. A sample receiver programmed in C is also given. The evaluation of this system has been done by using the Microchip CAN Bus Analyzer Tool connected to the GPIO port of the development board that simulates CAN communication.
In the past decade computer models have become very popular in the field of biomechanics due to exponentially increasing computer power. Biomechanical computer models can roughly be subdivided into two groups: multi-body models and numerical models. The theoretical aspects of both modelling strategies will be introduced. However, the focus of this chapter lies on demonstrating the power and versatility of computer models in the field of biomechanics by presenting sophisticated finite element models of human body parts. Special attention is paid to explain the setup of individual models using medical scan data. In order to reach the goal of individualising the model a chain of tools including medical imaging, image acquisition and processing, mesh generation, material modelling and finite element simulation –possibly on parallel computer architectures- becomes necessary. The basic concepts of these tools are described and application results are presented. The chapter ends with a short outlook into the future of computer biomechanics.
In the eld of accessing and visualization mobile sensors and their recorded data, di erent approaches were realized. The OGC1 Sensor observation Service supplies a standard to access these information, stored on servers. To be able to access these servers, an interface must be developed and implemented. The result should be a con gurable development framework for web-based GIS clients supporting the OGC sensor observation services. In particular the framework should allow continuous position updates of mobile sensors. Visualization features like charts, bounding boxes of sensors and data series should be included.
Green IT (Green IS, Green ICT) is a concept of saving energy consumption to reduce IT costs. A current survey shows that only few companies in German speaking countries consider this aspect in their daily business. This is important facing the current situation of attempts of cost saving during the current economic crisis worldwide. This paper introduces into Green IT and presents an IT management and controlling concept. Then the main results of a currently presented survey are used to modify the concept. Finally an agenda for future research is given
The usage of link quality based routing metrics significantly improves the quality of the chosen paths and by that the performance of the network. But, attackers may try to exploit link qualities for their purposes. Especially in tactical multi-hop networks, routing may fall prey to an attacker. Such routing attacks are a serious threat to communication. TOGBAD is a centralised approach, using topology graphs to detect routing attacks. In this paper, we enhance TOGBAD with the capability to detect fake link qualities. We use a Challenge/Response method to estimate the link qualities in the network. Based on this, we perform plausibility checks for the link qualities propagated by the nodes in the network. Furthermore, we study the impact of attackers propagating fake link qualities and present simulation results showing TOGBAD's detection rate.
Routing Attacks are a serious threat to communication in tactical MANETs. TOGBAD is a centralised approach, using topology graphs to detect such attacks. In this paper, we present TOGBAD's newly added wormhole detection capability. It is an adaptation of a wormhole detection method developed by Hu et al. This method is based on nodes' positions. We adapted it to the specific properties of tactical environments. Furthermore, we present simulation results which show TOGBAD's performance regarding the detection of wormhole attacks.
The Web has become an indispensable prerequisite of everyday live and the Web browser is the most used application on a variety of distinct devices. The content delivered by the Web has changed drastically from static pages to media-rich and interactive Web applications offering nearly the same functionality as native applications, a trend which is further pushed by the Cloud and more specifically the Cloud’s SaaS layer. In the light of this development, security and performance of Web browsing has become a crucial issue.
At present, data publication is one of the most dynamic topics in e-Research. While the fundamental problems of electronic text publication have been solved in the past decade, standards for the external and internal organisation of data repositories are advanced in some research disciplines but underdeveloped in others. We discuss the differences between an electronic text publication and a data publication and the challenges that result from these differences for the data publication process. We place the data publication process in the context of the human knowledge spiral and discuss key factors for the successful acquisition of research data from the point of view of a data repository. For the relevant activities of the publication process, we list some of the measures and best practices of successful data repositories.
Based on our reconfigurable FPGA spectrometer technology, we have developed a read-out system, operating in the frequency domain, for arrays of Microwave Kinetic Inductance Detectors (MKIDs). The readout consists of a combination of two digital boards: A programmable DAC-/FPGA-board (tone-generator) to stimulate the MKIDs detectors and an ADC-/FPGA-unit to analyze the detectors response. Laboratory measurement show no deterioration of the noise performance compared to low noise analog mixing. Thus, this technique allows capturing several hundreds of detector signals with just one pair of coaxial cables.
Die Fachhochschulen haben sich als Hochschulen für angewandte Wissenschaften seit ihrer Gründung Anfang der 70er Jahre deutlich gewandelt. Das Fächerportfolio vieler Fachhochschulen ist inzwischen mit jenem der Universitäten vergleichbar. In einigen Fächern bilden die Fachhochschulen sogar den überwiegenden Anteil von Absolventen aus. Die anwendungsorientierte Spitzenforschung gehört zum Selbstverständnis vieler Fachhochschulen. Vor diesem Hintergrund ist es unverständlich und für die wirtschaftliche Zukunftsfähigkeit schädlich, dass Fachhochschulen immer noch deutliche Wettbewerbsnachteile in der Weiterqualifizierung des wissenschaftlichen Nachwuchses haben. Dies gilt umso mehr, wenn mit Fachhochschulen vergleichbaren privaten Hochschulen das Promotionsrecht zugestanden wird.
The smart home of the future is typically researched in lab settings or apartments that have been built from scratch. However, comparing the lifecycle of buildings and information technology, it is evident that modernization strategies and technologies are needed to empower residents to modify and extend their homes to make it smarter. In this paper, we describe a case study about the deployment, adaption to and adoption of tailorable home energy management systems in 7 private households. Based on this experience, we want to discuss how hardware and software technologies should be designed so that people could build their own smart home with a high usability and user experience.
In diesem Beitrag wird der interaktive Volumenrenderer Volt für die NVIDIA CUDA Architektur vorgestellt. Die Beschleunigung wird durch das Ausnutzen der technischen Eigenschaften des CUDA Device, durch die Partitionierung des Algorithmus und durch die asynchrone Ausführung des CUDA Kernels erreicht. Parallelität wird auf dem Host, auf dem Device und zwischen Host und Device genutzt. Es wird dargestellt, wie die Berechnungen durch den gezielten Einsatz der Ressourcen effizient durchgeführt werden. Die Ergebnisse werden zurückkopiert, so dass der Kernel nicht auf dem zur Anzeige bestimmten Device ausgeführt werden muss. Synchronisation der CUDA Threads ist nicht notwendig.

Novel Automated Three-Dimensional Genome Scanning Based on the Nuclear Architecture of Telomeres

This master thesis describes a supervised approach to the detection and the identification of humans in TV-style video sequences. In still images and video sequences, humans appear in different poses and views, fully visible and partly occluded, with varying distances to the camera, at different places, under different illumination conditions, etc. This diversity in appearance makes the task of human detection and identification to a particularly challenging problem. A possible solution of this problem is interesting for a wide range of applications such as video surveillance and content-based image and video processing. In order to detect humans in views ranging from full to close-up view and in the presence of clutter and occlusion, they are modeled by an assembly of several upper body parts. For each body part, a detector is trained based on a Support Vector Machine and on densely sampled, SIFT-like feature points in a detection window. For a more robust human detection, localized body parts are assembled using a learned model for geometric relations based on Gaussians. For a flexible human identification, the outward appearance of humans is captured and learned using the Bag-of-Features approach and non-linear Support Vector Machines. Probabilistic votes for each body part are combined to improve classification results. The combined votes yield an identification accuracy of about 80% in our experiments on episodes of the TV series "Buffy the Vampire Slayer". The Bag-of-Features approach has been used in previous work mainly for object classification tasks. Our results show that this approach can also be applied to the identification of humans in video sequences. Despite the difficulty of the given problem, the overall results are good and encourage future work in this direction.
Providing Mobile Phone Access in Rural Areas via Heterogeneous Meshed Wireless Back-Haul Networks

Balanites aegyptiaca (Balanitaceae) is a widely grown desert plant with multiuse potential. In the present paper, a crude extract from B. aegyptiaca seeds equivalent to a ratio of 1 : 2000 seeds to the extract was screened for antiplasmodial activity. The determined IC(50) value for the chloroquine-susceptible Plasmodium falciparum NF54 strain was 68.26 μg/μL ± 3.5. Analysis of the extract by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry detected 6-phenyl-2(H)-1,2,4-triazin-5-one oxime, an inhibitor of the parasitic M18 Aspartyl Aminopeptidase as one of the compounds which is responsible for the in vitro antiplasmodial activity. The crude plant extract had a K(i) of 2.35 μg/μL and showed a dose-dependent response. After depletion of the compound, a significantly lower inhibition was determined with a K(i) of 4.8 μg/μL. Moreover, two phenolic compounds, that is, 2,6-di-tert-butyl-phenol and 2,4-di-tert-butyl-phenol, with determined IC(50) values of 50.29 μM ± 3 and 47.82 μM ± 2.5, respectively, were detected. These compounds may contribute to the in vitro antimalarial activity due to their antioxidative properties. In an in vivo experiment, treatment of BALB/c mice with the aqueous Balanite extract did not lead to eradication of the parasites, although a reduced parasitemia at day 12 p.i. was observed.

Die sogenannte Regionalstudie trägt den Langtitel "Regionalwirtschaftliche Bedeutung der Hochschule Bonn-Rhein-Sieg und zukünftige Einbindung in die strategische Entwicklung der Region" und wurde 2010 erstellt und 2011 veröffentlicht. Sie analysiert die regionalwirtschaftliche Bedeutung der Hochschule primär unter quantitativen Aspekten und aus externer Sicht. Viele der daraus resultierenden Anregungen für die strategische Ausrichtung der Hochschule wurden bereits während der Feldphase im Hochschulentwicklungsplan aufgegriffen, konnten wegen der Parallelität aber nicht in der Studie Eingang finden.
Die Analyse zeigt, welchen Beitrag die Hochschule für die regionale Entwicklung leisten kann - im Einklang mit den Kommunen, der Gebietskörperschaften und der regional ansässigen Unternehmen.

The recent explosion of available audio-visual media is the new challenge for information retrieval research. Audio speech recognition systems translate spoken content to the text domain. There is a need for searching and indexing this data which possesses no logical structure. One possible way to structure it on a high level of abstraction is by finding topic boundaries. Two unsupervised topic segmentation methods were evaluated with real-world data in the course of this work. The first one, TSF, models topic shifts as fluctuations in the similarity function of the transcript. The second one, LCSeg, approaches topic changes as places with the least overlapping lexical chains. Only LCSeg performed close to a similar real-world corpus. Other reported results could not be outperformed. Topic analysis based on the repeated word usage models renders topic changes more ambiguous than expected. This issue has more impact on the segmentation quality than the state-of-the-art ASR word error rate. It could be concluded that it is advisable to develop topic segmentation algorithms with real-world data to avoid potential biases to artificial data. Unlike evaluated approaches based on word usage analysis, methods operating with local contexts can be expected to perform better through emulation of semantic dependencies.
The task of this thesis is to develop an OGC-compliant Sensor Observation Service (SOS) { a component of the SWE { for GPS related sensor data in this context. It should, in contrast to existing implementations, support full mobility of the sensors and be con gurable with respect to adding di erent kinds of sensors. In particular, mobile phones should be considered as sensors, which transmit their data to the SOS server through the transactional SOS interface.
Nowadays Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGA) are used in many fields of research, e.g. to create prototypes of hardware or in applications where hardware functionality has to be changed more frequently. Boolean circuits, which can be implemented by FPGAs are the compiled result of hardware description languages such as Verilog or VHDL. Odin II is a tool, which supports developers in the research of FPGA based applications and FPGA architecture exploration by providing a framework for compilation and verification. In combination with the tools ABC, T-VPACK and VPR, Odin II is part of a CAD flow, which compiles Verilog source code that targets specific hardware resources. This paper describes the development of a graphical user interface as part of Odin II. The goal is to visualize the results of these tools in order to explore the changing structure during the compilation and optimization processes, which can be helpful to research new FPGA architectures and improve the workflow.
