Agricultural activities within city boundaries have a long history in both developed and developing countries. In this paper, a broad approach to Urban AgriCulture (UAC) is used, one that includes the production of crops in urban and peri-urban areas and ranges in developed countries from allotment gardens over community gardens to semi-entrepreneurial self-harvest farms and fully commercialized agriculture. With an empirical case study on UAC Initiatives in the Bonn/Rhein-Sieg region this work fills a gap since the lack of comprehensive and comparative studies on urban agriculture (UA) currently makes it difficult for researchers to identify the benefits of UA activities.
Urban food systems consist of many stakeholders with different perspectives, different interests and different governance tools. This study aimed at developing potential future scenarios for the food system of Cologne by analysing the system with a Delphi approach. In our research-design, the suitability of the Delphi-method was evaluated not only as a tool for future modelling and scenario design, but also as a communication tool among the group of participants on a multi-stakeholder-platform. As a case study, the Food Policy Council of Cologne, Germany was used. Cologne can be seen as a forerunner among German cities in the development of a new urban food policy. Some of the successful steps to re-envisioning food as an urban system include joining the Milan Urban Food Policy Pact, the decision of the City Council to become an edible city and the establishment of a Food Policy Council. For the study it was important to capture participants’ visions of a common goal regarding the governance of the urban food system and also to identify mental ‘silos’. It was obvious that the municipality of Cologne together with the Food Policy Council made great efforts towards participatory processes to build a vision for a sustainable and regional food supply. However, many stakeholder-groups in the process still work exclusively among themselves and do not actively practice the confrontation with the viewpoints of other relevant groups. This supports the maintenance of ‘silos’ and leaves little room for face-to-face discussions. Therefore, the primary aim of this study is to explore key components of food provisioning in the future for Cologne while confronting all stakeholders (municipal administration and politicians, farmers and food activists) with the perspectives of all group members. We used a multi-stakeholder Delphi approach with 19 panellists to find out essential components of the municipal regional food provisioning system in Cologne. Unique in this Delphi study is the bringing together of municipal administration, regional urban farmers and food activists. The research is still on-going, but preliminary results show that more communication among all relevant actors, especially horizontally among different city departments, in the urban food system is needed.
Nitrosamines have been identified as a probable human carcinogen and thus are of high concern in many manufacturing industries and various matrices (for example pharmaceutical, cosmetic and food products, workplace air or potable- and wastewater). This study aims to analyse nine nitrosamines relevant in the field of occupational safety using a gas chromatography-drift tube ion mobility spectrometry (GC-DT-IMS) system. To do this, single nitrosamine standards as well as a standard mix, each at 0.1 g/L, were introduced via liquid injection. A GC-DT-IMS method capable of separating the nitrosamine signals according to retention time (first dimension) and drift time (second dimension) in 10 min was developed. The system shows excellent selectivity as each nitrosamine gives two signals pertaining to monomer and dimer in the second dimension. For the first time, reduced ion mobility values for nitrosamines were determined, ranging from 1.18 to 2.03 cm2s−1V−1. The high selectivity of the GC-DT-IMS method could provide a definite advantage for monitoring nitrosamines in different manufacturing industries and consumer products.
A recent trend in interactive environments are large, ultra high resolution displays (LUHRDs). Compared to other large interactive installations, like the CAVE tm , LUHRDs are usually flat or (slightly) curved and have a significantly higher resolution, offering new research and application opportunities.
This tutorial provides information for researchers and engineers who plan to install and use a large ultra-high resolution display. We will give detailed information on the hardware and software of recently created and established installations and will show the variety of possible approaches. Also, we will talk about rendering software, rendering techniques and interaction for LUHRDs, as well as applications.

Most VE-frameworks try to support many different input and output devices. They do not concentrate so much on the rendering because this is tradi- tionally done by graphics workstation. In this short paper we present a modern VE framework that has a small kernel and is able to use different renderers. This includes sound renderers, physics renderers and software based graphics renderers. While our VE framework, named basho is still under development we have an alpha version running under Linux and MacOS X.
This presentation gives an overview of current research in the area of high quality rendering and visualization at the Institute of Visual Computing (IVC). Our research facility has some unique software and hardware installations of which we will describe a large, ultra- high resolution (72 megapixel) video wall in this presentation.
Clusters of commodity PCs are widely considered as the way to go to improve rendering performance and quality in many real-time rendering applications. We describe the design and implementation of our parallel rendering system for real-time rendering applications. Major design objectives for our system are: usage of commodity hardware for all system components, ease of integration into existing Virtual Environments software, and flexibility in applying different rendering techniques, e.g. using ray tracing to render distinct objects with a particularly high quality.
Interactive rendering of complex models has many applications in the Virtual Reality Continuum. The oil&gas industry uses interactive visualizations of huge seismic data sets to evaluate and plan drilling operations. The automotive industry evaluates designs based on very detailed models. Unfortunately, many of these very complex geometric models cannot be displayed with interactive frame rates on graphics workstations. This is due to the limited scalability of their graphics performance. Recently there is a trend to use networked standard PCs to solve this problem. Care must be taken however, because of nonexistent shared memory with clustered PCs. All data and commands have to be sent across the network. It turns out that the removal of the network bottleneck is a challenging problem to solve in this context.In this article we present some approaches for network aware parallel rendering on commodity hardware. These strategies are technological as well as algorithmic solutions.
Flüssigkeit, die in Werbespots symbolisch für Menstruationsblut steht, war jahrzehntelang blau, erst im September 2021 zeigte ein Hersteller erstmalig eine Flüssigkeit, welche realitätsnah in der Farbe Rot dargestellt wurde (1). Hygieneartikel, die Menstruierende zwingend benötigen, sind in Deutschland mit wenigen Ausnahmen auf öffentlichen Toiletten nicht verfügbar: Das Nicht-Sichtbarsein offenbarte auch im Jahr 2021 das Tabu um natürliche biologische Prozesse des weiblichen Körpers. Scham und Einschränkungen, die sich verhindern ließen, sind die Folge. Menstruierende werden in ihrem Wohlbefinden limitiert, und negative Erlebnisse führen dazu, dass Betroffene in der Ausübung von sozialen, schulischen und beruflichen Aktivitäten nicht nur durch die Menstruation selbst, sondern auch durch Normen und Erziehungsmuster beeinträchtigt sind, wie zahlreiche internationale Studien gezeigt haben (2). Für den deutschen Hochschulkontext fehlen solche Studien bislang.
Gleichlaufgelenke als Teil der Antriebswellen (Seitenwellen und Längswellen) sind in allen maßgeblichen Triebstrangkonfigurationen im direkten Leistungsfluss angeordnet. Ihre Hauptfunktion ist die Übertragung einer Antriebsleistung unter Ermöglichung von Abbeugung und Axialverschiebung. Dieser Beitrag soll einen Überblick zu den wesentlichen, auf dem heutigen Markt verbreiteten Bauweisen und ihren jeweiligen Einsatzgebieten geben. Besonders berücksichtigt werden hierbei neue Gelenkkonzepte, die sich aufgrund ihrer besonderen Gestaltung durch deutlich höhere Wirkungsgrade auszeichnen. Der Einfluss auf den Energieverbrauch soll quantifiziert werden, hierzu wird ein neuartiger Berechnungsansatz vorgestellt, der eine einfache Abschätzung des Einflusses von Wirkungsgradverbesserungen auf den Energieverbrauch für verschiedener Antriebskonzepte (ICE / Hybrid / E-Fahrzeuge) erlaubt.
