(2007)
Data management is a challenge in both scientific and technical environments. Therefore researchers have developed a special interest in this field. Modern approaches (i.e. Subversion, CVS) already offer authoring and versioning in distributed systems. However this might be insufficient in a vast number of scenarios, where not only the data resulting from a process, but also data which describes the process that generated those results is crucial.
The development of mobile robotic systems is a demanding task regarding its complexity, required resources and skills in multiple fields such as software development, artificial intelligence, mechanical design, electrical engineering, signal processing, sensor technology or control theory. This holds true particularly for soccer playing robots, where additional aspects like high dynamics, cooperation and high physical stress have to be dealt with. In robot competitions such as RoboCup, additional skills in the domains of team, project and knowledge management are of importance.

Swedish wheeled mobile robots have remarkable mobility properties allowing them to rotate and translate at the same time. Being holonomic systems, their kinematics model results in the possibility of designing separate and independent position and heading trajectory tracking control laws. Nevertheless, if these control laws should be implemented in the presence of unaccounted actuator saturation, the resulting saturated linear and angular velocity commands could interfere with each other thus dramatically affecting the overall expected performance. Based on Lyapunov’s direct method, a position and heading trajectory tracking control law for Swedish wheeled robots is developed. It explicitly accounts for actuator saturation by using ideas from a prioritized task based control framework.

Reliable multicast transport services for content delivery in heterogeneous mobile environment
(2007)
For efficient deployment of new reliable multicast applications in heterogeneous mobile Internet environments, appropriate retransmission strategies are proposed. The focus is the minimization of the protocol overhead for reliable transport taking into account behaviour in mobile networks (oss and handover behaviour) and application requirements (such as carousel file transfer, one-to-many download and media streaming combined with recording). The proposed techniques are designed as building blocks for localized multicast error control supported by access routers. Considering IETF RMT standardization work, the discussed retransmission approaches can be used for flexible configuration of tree-based reliable multicast protocols in converged wired and wireless Internet environment. The implementation developed for the European project DAIDALOS [1] is based on Linux IPv6 environment. Simulations in ns2 focusing on the benefits of the proposed multicast retransmission schemes for particular application scenarios are presented.
Policy based resource management for QoS aware applications in heterogeneous network environments
(2007)
Dynamic configuration and adaptation of resources for QoS-aware applications in heterogeneous access network environment (UMTS, WIMAX, WLAN DVB-T, DVB-H) using automated tools is a challenge today. The focus of this paper is a toolkit for intelligent management of resource allocation in heterogeneous network infrastructures based on policies of different actors (network operator, service providers and users). Policy based management of resources for QoS-aware applications (Video-on-Demand, Mobile TV) dependent on network capabilities, context learning and preferences of the policy actors is proposed, which enhances the current state-of-the-art and IETF standardisation. The policy management toolkit includes components for policy specification, adaptation and enforcement, which are interacting using policy repository. The design allows the automated resource adaptation for QoS based applications based on context information and hierarchical dependencies of policy actors. A learning component is integrated in order to discover the context considering measurement and monitoring data. The policy management tookit is discussed, emphasising on ontology driven policy repository design, context learning and flexible scenario-oriented management interfaces for policy specifications.
The prototype of a workflow system for the submission of content to a digital object repository is here presented. It is based entirely on open-source standard components and features a service-oriented architecture. The front-end consists of Java Business Process Management (jBPM), Java Server Faces (JSF), and Java Server Pages (JSP). A Fedora Repository and a mySQL data base management system serve as a back-end. The communication between front-end and back-end uses a SOAP minimal binding stub. We describe the design principles and the construction of the prototype and discuss the possibilities and limitations of work ow creation by administrators. The code of the prototype is open-source and can be retrieved in the project escipub at http://sourceforge.net/ .
In this paper, we describe an approach to academic teaching in computer science using storytelling as a means for background research to hypermedia and virtual reality topics. It is shown that narrative activity within the context of a Hypermedia Novel related to educational content can enhance motivation for self-conducted learning and in parallel lead to an edutainment system of its own. The narrative practice and background research as well as the resulting product can supplement lecture material with comparable success to traditional academic teaching approaches.
