We examine the effect of nanometer-sized aircraft-induced aqueous sulfuric acid (H2SO4/H2O) particles on atmospheric ozone as a function of temperature. Our calculations are based on a previously derived parameterization for the regional-scale perturbations of the sulfate surface area density due to air traffic in the North Atlantic Flight Corridor (NAFC) and a chemical box model. We confirm large scale model results that at temperatures T>210 K additional ozone loss -- mainly caused by hydrolysis of BrONO2 and N2O5 -- scales in proportion with the aviation-produced increase of the background aerosol surface area. However, at lower temperatures (< 210 K) we isolate two effects which efficiently reduce the aircraft-induced perturbation: (1) background particles growth due to H2O and HNO3 uptake enhance scavenging losses of aviation-produced liquid particles and (2) the Kelvin effect efficiently limits chlorine activation on the small aircraft-induced droplets by reducing the solubility of chemically reacting species. These two effects lead to a substantial reduction of heterogeneous chemistry on aircraft-induced volatile aerosols under cold conditions. In contrast we find contrail ice particles to be potentially important for heterogeneous chlorine activation and reductions in ozone levels. These features have not been taken into consideration in previous global studies of the atmospheric impact of aviation. Therefore, to parameterize them in global chemistry and transport models, we propose the following parameterisation: scale the hydrolysis reactions by the aircraft-induced surface area increase, and neglect heterogeneous chlorine reactions on liquid plume particles but not on ice contrails and aircraft induced ice clouds.

Human molybdenum cofactor deficiency is a rare and devastating autosomal-recessive disease for which no therapy is known. The absence of active sulfite oxidase-a molybdenum cofactor-dependent enzyme-results in neonatal seizures and early childhood death. Most patients harbor mutations in the MOCS1 gene, whose murine homolog was disrupted by homologous recombination with a targeting vector. As in humans, heterozygous mice display no symptoms, but homozygous animals die between days 1 and 11 after birth. Biochemical analyis of these animals shows that molydopterin and active cofactor are undetectable. They do not possess any sulfite oxidase or xanthine dehydrogenase activity. No organ abnormalities were observed and the synaptic localization of inhibitory receptors, which was found to be disturbed in molybdenum cofactor deficient-mice with a Gephyrin mutation, appears normal. MOCS1(-/-) mice could be a suitable animal model for biochemical and/or genetic therapy approaches.
Reggie-1/flotillin-2 is a plasma membrane-associated cytoplasmic protein, which defines non-caveolar raft microdomains. Reggie-1/flotillin-2 is enriched in detergent insoluble (TX100) membrane fractions (DIG), co-localizes with activated GPI-linked proteins and the fyn-kinase in neurons and T cells, and thus apparently participates in the assembly of protein complexes essential for signal transduction. In T cells activated by crosslinking the GPI-linked protein Thy-1 or by crosslinking the ganglioside GM1, reggie-1/flotillin-2 co-localizes with the T cell receptor. To determine whether reggie-1/flotillin-2 is also expressed in B cells, primary B cells from human blood and cell lines representing the developmental stages of pro, pre, mature and plasma B cells were analyzed by Western blotting, RT-PCR and immunofluorescence. Here, we show that reggie-1/flotillin-2 is expressed throughout B cell development, as well as in primary B cells, purified by cell sorting. On non-activated mature B cell Raji cell line we found reggie-1/flotillin-2 are exclusively in the detergent (TX100) insoluble membrane fractions that are staining positive for the raft marker GM1. Immunofluorescence microscopy showed that reggie-1/flotillin-2 is localized at the plasma membrane and marks intracellular spots in PBMCs. Confocal co-localization studies showed that reggie-1/flotillin-2 is associated with the plasma membrane, and the centrosomes (microtubule organizing centers) in these PBMCs. Comparison of reggie-1/flotillin-2 cDNA sequences with the genomic sequence database allowed us to determine the exon/intron structures in mouse and human. The gene organizations are highly conserved suggesting an important function of reggie-1/flotillin-2. Since reggie/flotillin proteins co-cluster with the T cell receptor and fyn kinases upon T cell stimulation, our findings of reggie-1/flotillin-2 in B cells suggest a similar role in B cell function.

Optical distortions, resulting from lens characteristics, non-aligned projection and variations in the light source, decrease the quality of projection displays. Knowledge of the sources and characteristics of these distortions allows their electronic correction. The integration of electronic image correction in the display controller IC allows high quality projection without additional components.
User Modeling and Machine Learning for User Modeling have both become important research topics and key techniques in recent adaptive systems. One of the most intriguing problems in the `information age´ is how to filter relevant information from the huge amount of available data. This problem is tackled by using models of the user´s interest in order to increase precision and discriminate interesting information from un-interesting data. However, any user modeling approach suffers from several major drawbacks: User models built by the system need to be inspectable and understandable by the user himself. Secondly, users in general are not willing to give feedback concerning user satisfaction by the delivered results.
The problem of filtering relevant information from the huge amount of available data is tackled by using models of the user's interest in order to discriminate interesting information from un-interesting data. As a consequence, Machine Learning for User Modeling (ML4UM) has become a key technique in recent adaptive systems. This article presents the novel approach of conceptual user models which are easy to understand and which allow for the system to explain its actions to the user. We show that ILP can be applied for the task of inducing user models from even sparse feedback by mutual sample enlargement. Results are evaluated independently of domain knowledge within a clear machine learning problem definition. The whole concept presented is realized in a meta web search engine, OySTER.

A way of combining a relatively new sensor-technology, that is optical analog VLSI devices, with a standard digital omni-directional vision system is investigated. The sensor used is a neuromorphic analog VLSI sensor that estimates the global visual image motion. The sensor provides two analog output voltages that represent the components of the global optical flow vector. The readout is guided by an omni-directional mirror that maps the location of the ball and directs the robot to align its position so that a sensor-actuator module that includes the analog VLSI optical flow sensor can be activated. The purpose of the sensor-actuator module is to operate with a higher update rate than the standard vision system and thus increase the reactivity of the robot for very specific situations. This paper will demonstrate an application example where the robot is a goalkeeper with the task of defending the goal during a penalty kick.

Clusters of commodity PCs are widely considered as the way to go to improve rendering performance and quality in many real-time rendering applications. We describe the design and implementation of our parallel rendering system for real-time rendering applications. Major design objectives for our system are: usage of commodity hardware for all system components, ease of integration into existing Virtual Environments software, and flexibility in applying different rendering techniques, e.g. using ray tracing to render distinct objects with a particularly high quality.
Multidisciplinary systems are described most suitably by bond graphs. In order to determine unnormalized frequency domain sensitivities in symbolic form, this paper proposes to construct in a systematic manner a bond graph from another bond graph, which is called the associated incremental bond graph in this paper. Contrary to other approaches reported in the literature the variables at the bonds of the incremental bond graph are not sensitivities but variations (incremental changes) in the power variables from their nominal values due to parameter changes. Thus their product is power. For linear elements their corresponding model in the incremental bond graph also has a linear characteristic. By deriving the system equations in symbolic state space form from the incremental bond graph in the same way as they are derived from the initial bond graph, the sensitivity matrix of the system can be set up in symbolic form. Its entries are transfer functions depending on the nominal parameter values and on the nominal states and the inputs of the original model. The sensitivities can be determined automatically by the bond graph preprocessor CAMP-G and the widely used program MATLAB together with the Symbolic Toolbox for symbolic mathematical calculation. No particular program is needed for the approach proposed. The initial bond graph model may be non-linear and may contain controlled sources and multiport elements. In that case the sensitivity model is linear time variant and must be solved in the time domain. The rationale and the generality of the proposed approach are presented. For illustration purposes a mechatronic example system, a load positioned by a constant-excitation d.c. motor, is presented and sensitivities are determined in symbolic form by means of CAMP-G/MATLAB.
Bond graph modelling was devised by Professor Paynter at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1959 and subsequently developed into a methodology for modelling multidisciplinary systems at a time when nobody was speaking of object-oriented modelling. On the other hand, so-called object-oriented modelling has become increasingly popular during the last few years. By relating the characteristics of both approaches, it is shown that bond graph modelling, although much older, may be viewed as a special form of object-oriented modelling. For that purpose the new object-oriented modelling language Modelica is used as a working language which aims at supporting multiple formalisms. Although it turns out that bond graph models can be described rather easily, it is obvious that Modelica started from generalized networks and was not designed to support bond graphs. The description of bond graph models in Modelica is illustrated by means of a hydraulic drive. Since VHDL-AMS as an important language standardized and supported by IEEE has been extended to support also modelling of non-electrical systems, it is briefly investigated as to whether it can be used for description of bond graphs. It turns out that currently it does not seem to be suitable.
