Process-induced changes in thermo-mechanical viscoelastic properties and the corresponding morphology of biodegradable polybutylene adipate terephthalate (PBAT) and polylactic acid (PLA) blown film blends modified with four multifunctional chain-extending cross-linkers (CECL) were investigated. The introduction of CECL modified the properties of the reference PBAT/PLA blend significantly. The thermal analysis showed that the chemical reactions were incomplete after compounding, and that film blowing extended them. SEM investigations of the fracture surfaces of blown extrusion films reveal the significant effect of CECL on the morphology formed during the processing. The anisotropic morphology introduced during film blowing proved to affect the degradation processes as well. Furthermore, the reactions of CECL with PBAT/PLA induced by the processing depend on the deformation directions. The blow-up ratio parameter was altered to investigate further process-induced changes proving synergy with mechanical and morphological features. Using blown film extrusion, the elongational behavior represents a very important characteristic. However, its evaluation may be quite often problematic, but with the SER Universal Testing Platform it was possible to determine changes in the duration of time intervals corresponding to the rupture of elongated samples.
Traditional and newly developed testing methods were used for extensive application-related characterization of transdermal therapeutic systems (TTS) and pressure sensitive adhesives (PSA). Large amplitude oscillatory shear tests of PSAs were correlated to the material behavior during the patient’s motion and showed that all PSAs were located close to the gel point. Furthermore, an increasing strain amplitude results in stretching and yielding of the PSA´s microstructure causing a consolidation of the network and a release with increasing strain amplitude. RheoTack approach was developed to allow for an advanced tack characterization of TTS with visual inspection. The results showed a clear resin content and rod geometry dependent behavior, and displays the PSA´s viscoelasticity resulting in either high tack and long stretched fibrils or non-adhesion and brittle behavior. Moreover, diffusion of water / sweat during TTS´s application might influence its performance. Therefore, a dielectric analysis based evaluation method displayed occurring water diffusion into the PSA from which the diffusion coefficient can be determined, and showed clear material and resin content dependent behavior. All methods allow for an advanced product-oriented material testing that can be utilized within further TTS development.
Social policy research on the ageing workforce from the perspective of employees and employers

Force field (FF) based molecular modeling is an often used method to investigate and study structural and dynamic properties of (bio-)chemical substances and systems. When such a system is modeled or refined, the force field parameters need to be adjusted. This force field parameter optimization can be a tedious task and is always a trade-off in terms of errors regarding the targeted properties. To better control the balance of various properties’ errors, in this study we introduce weighting factors for the optimization objectives. Different weighting strategies are compared to fine-tune the balance between bulk-phase density and relative conformational energies (RCE), using n-octane as a representative system. Additionally, a non-linear projection of the individual property-specific parts of the optimized loss function is deployed to further improve the balance between them. The results show that the overall error is reduced. One interesting outcome is a large variety in the resulting optimized force field parameters (FFParams) and corresponding errors, suggesting that the optimization landscape is multi-modal and very dependent on the weighting factor setup. We conclude that adjusting the weighting factors can be a very important feature to lower the overall error in the FF optimization procedure, giving researchers the possibility to fine-tune their FFs.
In vision tasks, a larger effective receptive field (ERF) is associated with better performance. While attention natively supports global context, convolution requires multiple stacked layers and a hierarchical structure for large context. In this work, we extend Hyena, a convolution-based attention replacement, from causal sequences to the non-causal two-dimensional image space. We scale the Hyena convolution kernels beyond the feature map size up to 191$\times$191 to maximize the ERF while maintaining sub-quadratic complexity in the number of pixels. We integrate our two-dimensional Hyena, HyenaPixel, and bidirectional Hyena into the MetaFormer framework. For image categorization, HyenaPixel and bidirectional Hyena achieve a competitive ImageNet-1k top-1 accuracy of 83.0% and 83.5%, respectively, while outperforming other large-kernel networks. Combining HyenaPixel with attention further increases accuracy to 83.6%. We attribute the success of attention to the lack of spatial bias in later stages and support this finding with bidirectional Hyena.
In recent years, eXtended Reality (XR) technology like Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality became both technically feasible as well as affordable which lead to a drastic demand of professionally designed and developed applications. However, this demand combined with a rapid pace of innovation revealed a lack of design tool support for professional interaction designers as well as a knowledge gap regarding their approaches and needs. To address this gap, this thesis engages with the work of professional XR interaction designers in a qualitative research into XR interaction design approach. Therefore, this thesis applies two complementary lenses stemming from scientific design and social practice theory discourses to observe, describe, analyze, and understand professional XR interaction designers' challenges and approaches with a focus on application prototyping.
This paper seeks to explore the framework within which the International Labour Office should promote a principled, practical approach to social security policy in the new millennium. Integration has to be built around a joint coherent policy vision and building such a policy vision requires debate. This paper is a product of a joint effort of members of the ILO Social Security Department and social security specialists working in the ILO field offices.
Design and characterization of geopolymer foams reinforced with Miscanthus x giganteus fibers
(2024)
This paper presents the effects of different amounts of fibers and foaming agent, as well as different fiber sizes, on the mechanical and thermal properties of fly ash-based geopolymer foams reinforced with Miscanthus x giganteus fibers. The mechanical properties of the geopolymer foams were measured through compressive strength, and their thermal properties were characterized by thermal conductivity and X-ray micro-computed tomography. Furthermore, design of experiment (DoE) were used to optimize the thermal conductivity and compressive strength of Miscanthus x giganteus reinforced geopolymer foams. In addition, the microstructure was studied using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Field emission scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR). Mixtures with a low thermal conductivity of 0.056 W (m K)−1 and a porosity of 79 vol% achieved a compressive strength of only 0.02 MPa. In comparison, mixtures with a thermal conductivity of 0.087 W (m K)−1 and a porosity of 58 vol% achieved a compressive strength of 0.45 MPa.

„from stable to table“
(2008)
Chloritesare found in igneous rocks, and more commonly
in sediments and low grade metamorphic rocks (BrinJiey &
Brown 1980). Because chlorites are less stable than most of
the other clay minerals when placed into an acidic
environment (Barnhisel & Bertsch 1989), they play
significant roles in the solution chemistry and may be an
important source of magnesium and micronutrients in soils
(Ross 1975). The objective of the present study was to
compare the weathering behavior of different chlorites in
different chemical environments.
The Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration defines Global Skill Partnerships (GSP) as an innovative means of strengthen skills development among origin countries and countries of destination in mutually beneficial manner. However, GSPs are very limited in number and scope, and empirical analyses of them are, to date, relatively rare. This study helps fill this gap in data by presenting and examining existing GSPs or GSP-like approaches (e.g., transnational training partnerships). The aim of the study is to take stock of the various conceptual discourses on and practical experience with transnational skill partnerships. Using Kosovo as a case study, the study details the structure of such partnerships and the processes they entail. It documents the experience of those involved and catalogues the factors contributing to success. On this basis, the authors propose a means of categorizing the various practices that will help structure the empirical diversity of such approaches and render them conceptually feasible: Transnational Skills and Mobility Partnerships (TSMP).
The art of nudging
(2023)
Do simple and subtle changes in the living and study environment improve the eating behaviour of students in an educational setting? This dissertation provides a not-so-simple answer to this simple question based on the outcomes of four studies that explore the effects and design of artwork nudges (specifically the artwork of Alberto Giacometti) on the eating behaviour of students by applying different research designs. Study 1 explores the effects of a Giacometti-like nudge (a more contemporary version of the original nudge) regarding the dietary behaviour of high school students in a controlled setting. Study 2 applies different artwork nudges within a virtual vignette setting to measure their effects on virtual meal choices made. Also, the degree to which individuals were aware of the nudge’s presence is included as an influential factor in nudge effectiveness. Study 3 assesses the susceptibility to nudges as measured with a questionnaire. Susceptibility to nudges is defined as nudgeability. Study 4 assesses the effects of the original Giacometti nudge in a real-world university cafeteria setting. Specifically, the immediate and sustained effects of the original Giacometti nudge on students’ meal purchases in the university cafeteria are considered. In addition, the role of awareness of the nudge’s presence as well as the acceptance of this specific nudge are discussed. The conclusion is drawn that the original Giacometti nudge should only be applied in an educational setting to improve healthy eating behaviour if the intended target groups and environment meet certain conditions. Artwork nudges in general should be applied only after rigorous testing of various types of different nudges and more research reflecting healthy eating in its entirety.
Striated muscle contraction is regulated by the translocation of troponin-tropomyosin strands over the thin filament surface. Relaxation relies partly on highly-favorable, conformation-dependent electrostatic contacts between actin and tropomyosin, which position tropomyosin such that it impedes actomyosin associations. Impaired relaxation and hypercontractile properties are hallmarks of various muscle disorders. The α-cardiac actin M305L hypertrophic cardiomyopathy-causing mutation lies near residues that help confine tropomyosin to an inhibitory position along thin filaments. Here, we investigate M305L actin in vivo, in vitro, and in silico to resolve emergent pathological properties and disease mechanisms. Our data suggest the mutation reduces actin flexibility and distorts the actin-tropomyosin electrostatic energy landscape that, in muscle, result in aberrant contractile inhibition and excessive force. Thus, actin flexibility may be required to establish and maintain interfacial contacts with tropomyosin as well as facilitate its movement over distinct actin surface features and is, therefore, likely necessary for proper regulation of contraction.

A Fourier scatterometry setup is evaluated to recover the key parameters of optical phase gratings. Based on these parameters, systematic errors in the printing process of two photon polymerization (TPP) gray-scale lithography 3d printers can be compensated, namely tilt and curvature deviations. The proposed setup is significantly cheaper than a confocal microscope, which is usually used to determine calibrations parameters for compensation of the TPP printing process. The grating parameters recovered this way are compared to those obtained with a confocal microscope. A clear correlation between confocal and scatterometric measurements is first shown for structures containing either tilt or curvature. The correlation is also shown for structures containing a mixture of tilt and curvature errors (squared Pearson coefficient $r^2$ = 0.92). This new compensation method is demonstrated on a TPP printer: A diffractive optical element (DOE) printed with correction parameters obtained from Fourier scatterometry shows a significant reduction in noise as compared to the uncompensated system. This verifies the successful reduction of tilt and curvature errors. Further improvements of the method are proposed, which may enable the measurements to become more precise than confocal measurements in the future, since scatterometry is not affected by the diffraction limit.
Microorganisms not only contribute to the spoilage of food but can also cause illnesses through consumption. Consumer concerns and doubts about the shelf life of the products and the resulting enormous amounts of food waste have led to a demand for a rapid, robust, and non-destructive method for the detection of microorganisms, especially in the food sector. Therefore, a rapid and simple sampling method for the Raman- and infrared (IR)-microspectroscopic study of microorganisms associated with spoilage processes was developed. For subsequent evaluation pre-processing routines, as well as chemometric models for classification of spoilage microorganisms were developed. The microbiological samples are taken using a disinfectable sampling stamp and measured by microspectroscopy without the usual pre-treatments such as purification separation, washing, and centrifugation. The resulting complex multivariate data sets were pre-processed, reduced by principal component analysis, and classified by discriminant analysis. Classification of independent unlabeled test data showed that microorganisms could be classified at genus, species, and strain levels with an accuracy of 96.5 % (Raman) and 94.5 % (IR), respectively, despite large biological differences and novel sampling strategies. As bacteria are exposed to constantly changing conditions and their adaptation mechanisms may make them inaccessible to conventional measurement methods, the methods and models developed were investigated for their suitability for microorganisms exposed to stress. Compared to normal growth conditions, spectral changes in lipids, polysaccharides, nucleic acids, and proteins were observed in microorganisms exposed to stress. Models were developed to discriminate microorganisms, independent of the involvement of various stress factors and storage times. Classification of the investigated bacteria yielded accuracies of 97.6 % (Raman) and 96.6 % (IR), respectively, and a robust and meaningful model was developed to discriminate different microorganisms at the genus, species, and strain levels. The obtained results are very promising and show that the methods and models developed for the discrimination of microorganisms as well as the investigation of stress factors on microorganisms by means of Raman- and IR-microspectroscopy have the potential to be used, for example, in the food sector for the rapid determination of surface contamination.
There & Back again: Developing a tool for testing of antimicrobial surfaces for space habitat design

This thesis proposes a multi-label classification approach using the Multimodal Transformer (MulT) [80] to perform multi-modal emotion categorization on a dataset of oral histories archived at the Haus der Geschichte (HdG). Prior uni-modal emotion classification experiments conducted on the novel HdG dataset provided less than satisfactory results. They uncovered issues such as class imbalance, ambiguities in emotion perception between annotators, and lack of representative training data to perform transfer learning [28]. Hence, the objectives of this thesis were to achieve better results by performing a multi-modal fusion and resolving the problems arising from class imbalance and annotator-induced bias in emotion perception. A further objective was to assess the quality of the novel HdG dataset and benchmark the results using SOTA techniques. Through a literature survey on the challenges, models, and datasets related to multi-modal emotion recognition, we created a methodology utilizing the MulT along with a multi-label classification approach. This approach produced a considerable improvement in the overall emotion recognition by obtaining an average AUC of 0.74 and Balanced-accuracy of 0.70 on the HdG dataset, which is comparable to state-of-the-art (SOTA) results on other datasets. In this manner, we were also able to benchmark the novel HdG dataset as well as introduce a novel multi-annotator learning approach to understand each annotator’s relative strengths and weaknesses for emotion perception. Our evaluation results highlight the potential benefits of the novel multi-annotator learning approach in improving overall performance by resolving the problems arising from annotator-induced bias and variation in the perception of emotions. Complementing these results, we performed a further qualitative analysis of the HdG annotations with a psychologist to study the ambiguities found in the annotations. We conclude that the ambiguities in annotations may have resulted from a combination of several socio-psychological factors and systemic issues associated with the process of creating these annotations. As these problems are also present in most multi-modal emotion recognition datasets, we conclude that the domain could benefit from a set of annotation guidelines to create standardized datasets.
Object detection concerns the classification and localization of objects in an image. To cope with changes in the environment, such as when new classes are added or a new domain is encountered, the detector needs to update itself with the new information while retaining knowledge learned in the past. Previous works have shown that training the detector solely on new data would produce a severe "forgetting" effect, in which the performance on past tasks deteriorates through each new learning phase. However, in many cases, storing and accessing past data is not possible due to privacy concerns or storage constraints. This project aims to investigate promising continual learning strategies for object detection without storing and accessing past training images and labels. We show that by utilizing the pseudo-background trick to deal with missing labels, and knowledge distillation to deal with missing data, the forgetting effect can be significantly reduced in both class-incremental and domain-incremental scenarios. Furthermore, an integration of a small latent replay buffer can result in a positive backward transfer, indicating the enhancement of past knowledge when new knowledge is learned.
Pyrolysis–Gas Chromatography
(2024)
The methodology of analytical pyrolysis-GC/MS has been known for several years, but is seldom used in research laboratories and process control in the chemical industry. This is due to the relative difficulty of interpreting the identified pyrolysis products as well as the variety of them. This book contains full identification of several classes of polymers/copolymers and biopolymers that can be very helpful to the user. In addition, the practical applications can encourage analytical chemists and engineers to use the techniques explored in this volume.
Smart heating systems are one of the core components of smart homes. A large portion of domestic energy consumption is derived from HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) systems, making them a relevant topic of the efforts to support an energy transition in private housing. For that reason, the technology has attracted attention both from the academic and the industry communities. User interfaces of smart heating systems have evolved from simple adjusting knobs to advanced data visualization interfaces, that allow for more advanced setting such as time tables and status information. With the advent of AI, we are interested in exploring how the interfaces will be evolving to build the connection between user needs and underlying AI system. Hence, this paper is targeted to provide early design implications towards an AI-based user interface for smart heating systems.
AI systems pose unknown challenges for designers, policymakers, and users which aggravates the assessment of potential harms and outcomes. Although understanding risks is a requirement for building trust in technology, users are often excluded from legal assessments and explanations of AI hazards. To address this issue we conducted three focus groups with 18 participants in total and discussed the European proposal for a legal framework for AI. Based on this, we aim to build a (conceptual) model that guides policymakers, designers, and researchers in understanding users’ risk perception of AI systems. In this paper, we provide selected examples based on our preliminary results. Moreover, we argue for the benefits of such a perspective.
When dialogues with voice assistants (VAs) fall apart, users often become confused or even frustrated. To address these issues and related privacy concerns, Amazon recently introduced a feature allowing Alexa users to inquire about why it behaved in a certain way. But how do users perceive this new feature? In this paper, we present preliminary results from research conducted as part of a three-year project involving 33 German households. This project utilized interviews, fieldwork, and co-design workshops to identify common unexpected behaviors of VAs, as well as users’ needs and expectations for explanations. Our findings show that, contrary to its intended purpose, the new feature actually exacerbates user confusion and frustration instead of clarifying Alexa's behavior. We argue that such voice interactions should be characterized as explanatory dialogs that account for VA’s unexpected behavior by providing interpretable information and prompting users to take action to improve their current and future interactions.
Project Management
(2023)
Companies are increasingly developing into dynamic and project-oriented organizations. Globalization, innovations and organizational dynamics require more and more projects, and thus a more project-oriented corporate organization and management. As a rule, managers as well as employees already work parallel to their line function in projects or completely from project to project.
At the same time, cross-company and especially international value chains lead to the cooperation of cross-departamental and intercultural teams. For this, the specialists and executives need above all knowledge and experience in project management and the corresponding concepts as well as in the special form of cooperation, team development and communication. Because the most problems in project management are not caused by project goals and methods, but by the many different problem-solving behavior and attitudes, e.g. between engineers and business people, different departments or the different country cultures. The international IT project specialist Tom DeMarco puts it in a nutshell (in Peopleware - Productive Projects and Teams: The major problems of our work are not so much technological as socio-logical in nature. In terms of content here, in contrast to traditional professional textbooks, not only the technologies are priority, but also the social and intercultural aspects of project work.
The book is aimed equally at students of all disciplines with a focus on managerial and project-related work as well as practitioners and entrepreneurs in all private business sectors as well as in NGOs, public projects or PPPs as public-private partnership.
Spektroskopische Qualifizierung und Quantifizierung von Hyaluronsäure in Nahrungsergänzungsmitteln
(2023)
This paper addresses the classification of Arabic text data in the field of Natural Language Processing (NLP), with a particular focus on Natural Language Inference (NLI) and Contradiction Detection (CD). Arabic is considered a resource-poor language, meaning that there are few data sets available, which leads to limited availability of NLP methods. To overcome this limitation, we create a dedicated data set from publicly available resources. Subsequently, transformer-based machine learning models are being trained and evaluated. We find that a language-specific model (AraBERT) performs competitively with state-of-the-art multilingual approaches, when we apply linguistically informed pre-training methods such as Named Entity Recognition (NER). To our knowledge, this is the first large-scale evaluation for this task in Arabic, as well as the first application of multi-task pre-training in this context.
RELA haploinsufficiency is a recently described autoinflammatory condition presenting with intermittent fevers and mucocutaneous ulcerations. The RELA gene encodes the p65 protein, one of five NF-κB family transcription factors. As RELA is an essential regulator of mucosal homeostasis, haploinsufficiency leads to decreased NF-κB signaling which promotes TNF-driven mucosal apoptosis with impaired epithelial recovery. Thus far, only eight cases have been reported in the literature. Here, we report four families with three novel and one previously described pathogenic variant in RELA. These four families included 23 affected individuals for which genetic testing was available in 16. Almost half of these patients had been previously diagnosed with more common rheumatologic entities (such as Behcet's Disease; BD) prior to the discovery of their pathogenic RELA variants. The most common clinical features were orogenital ulcers, rash, joint inflammation, and fever. The least common were conjunctivitis and recurrent infections. Clinical variability was remarkable even among familial cases, and incomplete penetrance was observed. Patients in our series were treated with a variety of medications, and benefit was observed with glucocorticoids, colchicine, and TNF inhibitors. Altogether, our work adds to the current literature and doubles the number of reported cases with RELA-Associated Inflammatory Disease (RAID). It reaffirms the central importance of the NF-κB pathway in immunity and inflammation, as well as the important regulatory role of RELA in mucosal homeostasis. RELA associated inflammatory disease should be considered in all patients with BD, particularly those with early onset and/or with a strong family history.
