Recent findings in South Africa have once again underlined the fact that the oldest people in the world obviously came from Africa. Thus, historically, this continent has a very special significance. However, its history in more recent times, especially from the mid-19th century onwards, was strongly influenced by colonisation by European states. Many deep wounds from that time still have an impact on society as a whole today. However, the continent is currently also confronted with a greater number of challenges of a different nature.
On the one hand, Africa is trying to strengthen internal cohesion by means of a number of regional organisations and the African Union as a globally active institution; on the other hand, the continent has been marked by political and military conflicts between neighbouring states over the past decades until the recent present. In addition, there are regular internal social upheavals in individual countries due to violent or manipulated political change.
Yet the continent could well be on a good development path, since it has a large number of important raw materials - also in comparison to other continents. However, the individual African states - and especially their citizens - often do not benefit from this to an adequate extent. This results in a social imbalance in large parts of the continent (data collection until the end of June 2023), which leads to considerable internal tensions. To make matters worse, Africa is the continent most affected by climate change.
A closer look at the partly very different economic, political and social situations of the large continent leads to an overall predominantly critical assessment of Africa's further development, which is explained in more detail in the final chapter with regard to the foreseeable consequences for the continent.
Neueste Funde in Südafrika haben nochmals unterstrichen, dass die ältesten Menschen der Welt offensichtlich aus Afrika abstammen. Somit kommt diesem Kontinent historisch gesehen ganz besondere Bedeutung zu. Allerdings war seine Geschichte in der jüngeren Zeit, insbesondere ab Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts, von der Kolonialisierung durch europäische Staaten stark geprägt. Viele tiefe Wunden aus der damaligen Zeit haben noch heute Auswirkungen auf die Gesellschaft insgesamt. Allerdings ist der Kontinent derzeit auch mit einer größeren Zahl anders gelagerter Herausforderungen konfrontiert.
Zum einen versucht Afrika mittels einer Anzahl von Regionalorganisationen sowie der Afrikanischen Union als global agierender Institution den inneren Zusammenhalt zu stärken, zum anderen ist der Kontinent über die letzten Jahrzehnte bis in die jüngste Gegenwart durch politische und militärische Konflikte zwischen Nachbarstaaten geprägt. Hinzu kommen regelmäßig innere gesellschaftliche Umwälzungen einzelner Länder durch einen gewaltsamen oder manipulierten politischen Wechsel.
Dabei könnte der Kontinent sich durchaus auf einem guten Entwicklungspfad befinden, verfügt er doch – auch im Vergleich zu anderen Kontinenten – über eine Vielzahl von wichtigen Rohstoffen. Allerdings profitieren die einzelnen afrikanischen Staaten – und insbesondere ihre Bürgerinnen und Bürger - hiervon oft nicht in einem angemessenen Rahmen. Somit ergibt sich in großen Teilen des Kontinents ein soziales Ungleichgewicht, das zu erheblichen inneren Spannungen führt. Erschwerend kommt hinzu, dass Afrika weltweit am stärksten vom Klimawandel betroffen ist.
Bei näherer Betrachtung der z.T. sehr unterschiedlichen wirtschaftlichen, politischen und sozialen Situation des großen Kontinents (Datenerhebung bis Ende Juni 2023) führt die vorliegende Untersuchung zu einer insgesamt überwiegend kritischen Einschätzung hinsichtlich der weiteren Entwicklung Afrikas, die im Schlusskapitel bzgl. der absehbaren Konsequenzen für den Kontinent näher dargelegt wird.
Die Debatte um muslimische Einwandernde in Deutschland, die in jüngster Zeit neuen Auftrieb erhalten hat (1), offenbart immer wieder simplifizierende Sichtweisen vom Islam als einer homogenen Religion. Dabei beweist bereits ein Blick auf die vielfältige muslimische Organisationslandschaft in Deutschland: Es gibt nicht den Islam, sondern stattdessen eine Vielzahl unterschiedlicher islamischer Strömungen, welche mitunter in Konkurrenz zu einander stehen und sich mal mehr, mal weniger deutlich voneinander abgrenzen. Diese Vielfalt der MuslimInnen in Deutschland sowie ihr eher geringer Organisationsgrad erschwert die Bildung eines zentralen islamischen Ansprechpartners, der für sich in Anspruch nehmen könnte, für die Mehrheit der MuslimInnen in Deutschland zu sprechen.

Only since the turn of the 21st century have humanitarian organisations developed specific strategies that address climate change impacts as a humanitarian challenge. Taking the International Red Cross / Red Crescent Movement, being the largest humanitarian network, as an empirical case study, the article discusses the Movement’s changes in the areas 1) agenda setting, 2) organisational restructuring, 3) networking, 4) programming, and 5) advocacy. Based on the case study and a theoretical framework of organisational sociology, the article provides conclusions on internal and external factors that can explain why the Movement has been successful in being one of the first actors within the organisational field of humanitarian organisations to focus systematically on the humanitarian implications of climatic changes.

Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) are engine of economy both for developed and developing countries. They play a significant role in income generation, job creation, poverty reduction and reducing income inequality. In Burundi, key stakeholders such as policy-makers as well as other international and national actors have made more effort to develop the segment of SMEs. Indeed, many start-ups have been created but are however, exposed to several challenges in their business operations. This paper aimed at investigating main critical barriers to SMEs growth and development in Burundi. The research was based upon a sample survey of small firms in Burundi and 314 small enterprises were surveyed. Rural start-ups’ critical barriers identified are mainly poor management, lack of access to market flow, lack of working capital, inadequate qualified workforce and low selling prices. On the other hand, five severe obstacles for urban SMEs identified are insecurity, access to financing, macroeconomic situation, lack of customers and unfair competition. A better understanding of all these barriers that SMEs are facing is useful to set up best strategies susceptible to increase their growth.

The non-farm sector is critical for the socio-economic development of Ghana especially the rural poor. Literature suggest that people engage in non-farm enterprises as a way out of poverty or a survival strategy, perhaps as a substitute for the landless. This paper analyses the determinants of individual participation in non-farm enterprises and the intensity of participation. The paper uses EGC/ISSER Socio-Economic Panel Survey data collected in 2009. The paper estimated the determinants of participation using a probit model and then estimated the intensity of participation using a truncated regression model. The results indicate that majority of women (about 73%) are engaged in non-farm enterprises in rural Ghana. The study found that females tended to participate more in non-farm self-employment and are less likely to participate in non-farm wage employment. The results further showed that individual characteristics such as the gender of the individual, being head of a household, being the spouse of a household head, having formal education, age of the individual, having access to credit, possessing a mobile phone, per capita landing holding and ownership of livestock influenced the participation of individuals in self-and wage employment. Results from truncated regression model for self-employed enterprises showed that having access to mobile phones, owning more livestock and electricity are important in determining the intensity of participation in self-employed enterprises. For wage-employment, being a household head, spouse of household head, having access to mobile phone and owning more livestock increased the number of days working on wage employment. Education is relevant for employment in the non-farm sector especially wage-employment. Government should play a lead role in making formal education accessible to the rural people. Deliberate policies should focus on addressing critical factors such as access to credit, mobile phone, electricity and education which are relevant for increasing participation intensity in rural enterprises.
Any political phenomenon can only be properly understood in its broader con-text. Questions of international cooperation are thus necessarily framed by his-torical processes and relations of power. We therefore start our first discussion with an examination of the global ‘status quo’ and embed the topic of this pub-lication, ODA graduation, into the shifting world order, analysing current roles and settings in international relations and identifying changes in positions, sta-tus and categories. What are the overarching issues determining world politics and who are the old and the new actors driving them? What is the impact of these global shifts on international cooperation, especially development coop-eration? Of what relevance are roles, status and categories and what is the im-pact of changes in positions and relations? What challenges face multilateralism and what ways exist to maintain and renew strategic partnerships and shared values?
