The year 2020 was dominated by the Corona pandemic, which abruptly changed everyday life at the university. Bonn-Rhein-Sieg University of Applied Sciences (H-BRS) succeeded not only in maintaining operations under these difficult circumstances, but also in enriching them with new ideas and insights. This difficult year 2020 has opened up new perspectives, especially for teaching, but also for research and administration. This annual report, to which we have given the motto "Walking - knowing the point of view, taking direction, showing attitude", tells of this. It shows which paths the H-BRS has taken in the past year. Some routes were rocky, and some slopes could only be overcome with combined efforts. Often, however, new terrain was opened up. The aim was always to find answers to the multi-layered, complex questions of our time - whether with regard to digitalisation, climate change or the social responsibility of science.
This exciting and innovative Handbook provides readers with a comprehensive and globally relevant overview of the instruments, actors and design features of social protection systems, as well as their application and impacts in practice. It is the first book that centres around system building globally, a theme that has gained political importance yet has received relatively little attention in academia.
This open access book brings together the latest developments from industry and research on automated driving and artificial intelligence.
Environment perception for highly automated driving heavily employs deep neural networks, facing many challenges. How much data do we need for training and testing? How to use synthetic data to save labeling costs for training? How do we increase robustness and decrease memory usage? For inevitably poor conditions: How do we know that the network is uncertain about its decisions? Can we understand a bit more about what actually happens inside neural networks? This leads to a very practical problem particularly for DNNs employed in automated driving: What are useful validation techniques and how about safety?
This book unites the views from both academia and industry, where computer vision and machine learning meet environment perception for highly automated driving. Naturally, aspects of data, robustness, uncertainty quantification, and, last but not least, safety are at the core of it. This book is unique: In its first part, an extended survey of all the relevant aspects is provided. The second part contains the detailed technical elaboration of the various questions mentioned above.
This book constitutes the proceedings of the 14th International Conference on Relational and Algebraic Methods in Computer Science, RAMiCS 2014 held in Marienstatt, Germany, in April/May 2014. The 25 revised full papers presented were carefully selected from 37 submissions. The papers are structured in specific fields on concurrent Kleene algebras and related formalisms, reasoning about computations and programs, heterogeneous and categorical approaches, applications of relational and algebraic methods and developments related to modal logics and lattices.

These proceedings are the outcome of the 5th annual joint conference on “Universities Entrepreneurship and Enterprise Development in Africa” between the University of Nairobi, Kenya, the University of Cape Coast, Ghana, and Bonn-Rhein-Sieg University of Applied Sciences, Germany, held on 10-11 November 2016 on Campus Sankt Augustin, Bonn-Rhein-Sieg University of Applied Sciences.
This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed post-conference proceedings of the 15th International Conference on Smart Card Research and Advanced Applications, CARDIS 2016, held in Cannes, France, in November 2016. The 15 revised full papers presented in this book were carefully reviewed and selected from 29 submissions. The focus of the conference was on all aspects of the design, development, deployment, validation, and application of smart cards or smart personal devices.
This book is about how computer systems might be designed to serve their users rather better. It deals with how to study the natural behaviour of users to see how computer systems might best help them, and how one might also involve them in the design of computer systems that will assist them in their everyday practices.
Governance and Sustainability in Information Systems. Managing the Transfer and Diffusion of IT

The short survey „Green IT 2009“ got a very pleasant feedback. The authors received 132 useful answers within only two weeks of survey (15th January until 31st January 2009). The electronic forms were sent to 1.000 companies in Germany and some neighbouring countries. The results show very clearly that the companies are already acting. Green IT has found its way into the companies in different ways and activities. But Green IT is known as a technical topic of IT management or building services engineering. The investments are made mostly in technical activities (energy saving hardware, virtualisation, cooling and more). From a business view the sourcing departments have to change their strategies and processes. The type and amount of IT investment decisions are not concerned by Green IT activities. The main targets of the companies are saving energy and costs followed by advancements in marketing and innovation.
People have dreamed of machines, which would free them from unpleasant, dull, dirty and dangerous tasks and work for them as servants, for centuries if not millennia. Service robots seem to finally let these dreams come true. But where are all these robots that eventually serve us all day long, day for day? A few service robots have entered the market: domestic and professional cleaning robots, lawnmowers, milking robots, or entertainment robots. Some of these robots look more like toys or gadgets rather than real robots. But where is the rest? This is a question, which is asked not only by customers, but also by service providers, care organizations, politicians, and funding agencies. The answer is not very satisfying. Today’s service robots have their problems operating in everyday environments. This is by far more challenging than operating an industrial robot behind a fence. There is a comprehensive list of technical and scientific problems, which still need to be solved. To advance the state of the art in service robotics towards robots, which are capable of operating in an everyday environment, was the major objective of the DESIRE project (Deutsche Service Robotik Initiative – Germany Service Robotics Initiative) funded by the German Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) under grant no. 01IME01A. This book offers a sample of the results achieved in DESIRE.
