For protection from inhaled pathogens many strategies have evolved in the airways such as mucociliary clearance and cough. We have previously shown that protective respiratory reflexes to locally released bacterial bitter taste substances are most probably initiated by tracheal brush cells (BC). Our single-cell RNA-seq analysis of murine BC revealed high expression levels of cholinergic and bitter taste signaling transcripts (Tas2r108, Gnat3, Trpm5). We directly demonstrate the secretion of acetylcholine (ACh) from BC upon stimulation with the Tas2R agonist denatonium. Inhibition of the taste transduction cascade abolished the increase in [Ca2+](i) in BC and subsequent ACh-release. ACh-release is regulated in an autocrine manner. While the muscarinic ACh-receptors M3R and M1R are activating, M2R is inhibitory. Paracrine effects of ACh released in response to denatonium included increased [Ca2+](i) in ciliated cells. Stimulation by denatonium or with Pseudomonas quinolone signaling molecules led to an increase in mucociliary clearance in explanted tracheae that was Trpm5- and M3R-mediated. We show that ACh-release from BC via the bitter taste cascade leads to immediate paracrine protective responses that can be boosted in an autocrine manner. This mechanism represents the initial step for the activation of innate immune responses against pathogens in the airways.

Known and novel techniques are described to implement a Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) in hardware, such that parallelized data can be processed. The usage of both - real and imaginary FFT-input - can help saving hardware. Based on the different techniques, flexible to use FFT-implementations have been developed by combining standard FFT-components (partly IP) and are compared, according to their hardware utilization. Finally, applicability has been demonstrated in practice by a FFTimplementation with 8192 channels as part of a FPGAspectrometer with a total bandwidth of 1.5 GHz.

In recent years a new category of digital signature algorithms based on Elliptic Curve Cryptography (ECC) has taken place besides well known schemes as RSA or DSA. So far it is, however, still not obvious how ECC-based signature schemes can be integrated in X.509-based Public Key Infrastructures (PKI).This paper briefly introduces cryptographic basics of signature schemes based on elliptic curves and points out the necessary cryptography parameters that are important in this context. Afterwards the structure and the encoding of X.509 certificates and Certificate Revocation Lists (CRL) are discussed regarding the integration of ECC public keys and ECC signatures respectively. The paper closes with exemplary implementations of ECC-based security systems.

Based on our reconfigurable FPGA spectrometer technology, we have developed a read-out system, operating in the frequency domain, for arrays of Microwave Kinetic Inductance Detectors (MKIDs). The readout consists of a combination of two digital boards: A programmable DAC-/FPGA-board (tone-generator) to stimulate the MKIDs detectors and an ADC-/FPGA-unit to analyze the detectors response. Laboratory measurement show no deterioration of the noise performance compared to low noise analog mixing. Thus, this technique allows capturing several hundreds of detector signals with just one pair of coaxial cables.
Policy based resource management for QoS aware applications in heterogeneous network environments
(2007)
Dynamic configuration and adaptation of resources for QoS-aware applications in heterogeneous access network environment (UMTS, WIMAX, WLAN DVB-T, DVB-H) using automated tools is a challenge today. The focus of this paper is a toolkit for intelligent management of resource allocation in heterogeneous network infrastructures based on policies of different actors (network operator, service providers and users). Policy based management of resources for QoS-aware applications (Video-on-Demand, Mobile TV) dependent on network capabilities, context learning and preferences of the policy actors is proposed, which enhances the current state-of-the-art and IETF standardisation. The policy management toolkit includes components for policy specification, adaptation and enforcement, which are interacting using policy repository. The design allows the automated resource adaptation for QoS based applications based on context information and hierarchical dependencies of policy actors. A learning component is integrated in order to discover the context considering measurement and monitoring data. The policy management tookit is discussed, emphasising on ontology driven policy repository design, context learning and flexible scenario-oriented management interfaces for policy specifications.
