Results from the EU-project iStoppFalls : feasibility, effectiveness, approach for fall prevention

This paper presents the outcomes of an exploratory field study that examined the social impact of an ICT-based suite of exergames for people with dementia and their caregivers. Qualitative data was collected over a period of 8 months, during which time we studied the daily life of 14 people with dementia and their informal and professional caregivers. We focus on the experiential aspects of the system and examine its social impact when integrated into the daily routines of both people with dementia themselves and their professional and family caregivers. Our findings indicate that relatives were able to regain leisure time, whilst people with dementia were able to recapture certain aspects of their social and daily activities that might otherwise have been lost to them. Results suggest that the system enhanced social-interaction, invigorated relationships, and improved the empowerment of people with dementia and their caregivers to face daily challenges.
There has been increasing interest in designing for dementia in recent years. Empirical investigation is now needed of the long-term role of caregivers in appropriating ICTs into the complex daily life of people with dementia (PwD). We present here the outcomes of a 4-month evaluation of the individual, social and institutional impact of a videogame-based training system. The everyday behavior and interactions of 52 PwD and 25 caregivers was studied qualitatively, focusing on the role played by caregivers in integrating the system into daily routines. Our results indicate that the successful appropriation of ICT for PwD depends partly on the physical, cognitive and social benefits for PwD, but especially on the added value perceived by their social care-network. We discuss the need for design in dementia to develop more socially embedded innovations that can address the social actors involved and thus contribute to practical solutions for professional and private care.
Von Spechten, Regentropfen und Herzschlägen: Vergleichende Frequenzanalyse periodischer Signale

Nahezu jede Einleitung allgemeinverständlicher Publikationen zur Herzratenvariabilität beginnt mit dem Wang Shu-He zugeschriebenen Zitat: "Wenn das Herz so regelmäßig wie das Klopfen eines Spechtes oder das Tröpfeln des Regens auf dem Dach wird, wird der Patient innerhalb von 4 Tagen sterben". Trotz der häufigen Verwendung dieses Zitats sind keine vergleichenden Analysen von Herzratenvariabilität, Spechttrommlern und Regentropfen verfügbar. Dies war Anlass zu den hier vorgestellten Messungen und dem Versuch, die gewonnenen Registrierungen durch geeignete Aufbereitung mit dem menschlichen Herzschlag vergleichen und zum Zitat ins Verhältnis setzen zu können.
Tierexperimentell konnte nachgewiesen werden, dass spezifische Ionenkanäle (vor allem TRPA1) des nozizeptiven Systems nachhaltig durch die Exposition mit blauem Licht moduliert werden können. Durch Nachweis der Wirksamkeit von nicht-visuellen Effekten einer Lichtexposition auf Somatosensorik und Nozizeption beim Menschen könnte der Einsatz einer Lichttherapie bei Patienten mit Erkrankungen des somatosensorischen Systems, insbesondere neuropathischen Schmerzen, von großer Bedeutung sein.
We present herein a new class of resin formulations for stereolithography, named FlexSL, with a broad bandwidth of tunable mechanical properties. The novel polyether(meth)acrylate based material class has outstanding material characteristics in combination with the advantages of being a biocompatible (meth)acrylate based processing material. FlexSL shows very promising results in several initial biocompatibility tests. This emphasizes its non-toxic behavior in a biomedical environment, caused mainly by the (meth)acrylate based core components. A short overview of mechanical and processing properties will be given in the end. The herein presented novel FlexSL materials show a significant lower cytotoxicity in contrast to commercial applied acrylic stereolithography resins. Further biocompatibility tests according to ISO 10993 protocols are planned. On the one hand, there are technical applications for this material (e.g. flaps, tubes, hoses, cables, sealing parts, connectors and other technical rubber-like applications), and on the other hand, broad fields of potential biomedical applications in which the FlexSL materials can be beneficial are obvious. Especially these could be small series production of medical products with special flexible material requirements. In addition, the usage for individual soft hearing aid shells, intra-operative planning services and tools like intra-op cutting templates and sawing guides is very attractive. The possibility to modify the FlexSL resins also for high-resolution applications makes it possible to manufacture now very flexible micro-prototypes with outstanding material characteristics and very fine structures with a minimum resolution of 20 mym and a layer thickness of minimal 5 myrn. These resin formulations are applicable and adjustable to other stereolithographic equipment available on the market.
