The simulation of fluid flows is of importance to many fields of application, especially in industry and infrastructure. The modelling equations applied describe a coupled system of non-linear, hyperbolic partial differential equations given by one-dimensional shallow water equations that enable the consistent implementation of free surface flows in open channels as well as pressurised flows in closed pipes. The numerical realisation of these equations is complicated and challenging to date due to their characteristic properties that are able to cause discontinuous solutions.
Cost efficient energy monitoring in existing large buildings demands for autonomous indoor sensors with low power consumption, high performance in multipath fading channels and economic implementation. Good performance in multipath fading channels can be achieved with noncoherent chaotic modulation schemes such as chaos on-off keying (COOK) or differential chaos shift keying (DCSK). While COOK stands out in the area of power consumption, DCSK excels when it comes to its performance in noisy and multipath fading channels. This paper evaluates a combination of both schemes for autonomous indoor sensors. The simulation results show 50% less power consumption than DCSK and more than 3dB SNR gain in Rayleigh fading channels at BER=10-3 as compared to COOK, making it a promising candidate for low power transmission in autonomous wireless indoor sensors. We further present an enhanced version of this scheme showing another 1 dB SNR improvement, but at 25% less power consumption than DCSK.
A novel approach to produce 2D designs by adapting the HyperNEAT algorithm to evolve non-uniform rational basis splines (NURBS) is presented. This representation is proposed as an alternative to previous pixel-based approaches primarily motivated by aesthetic interests, and not designed for optimization tasks. This spline representation outperforms previous pixel-based approaches on target matching tasks, performing well even in matching irregular target shapes. In addition to improved evolvability in the face of a well defined fitness metric, a NURBS representation has the added virtues of being continuous rather than discrete, as well as being intuitive and easily modified by graphic and industrial designers.
This paper proposes a new artificial neural network-based maximum power point tracker for photovoltaic application. This tracker significantly improves efficiency of the photovoltaic system with series-connection of photovoltaic modules in non-uniform irradiance on photovoltaic array surfaces. The artificial neural network uses irradiance and temperature sensors to generate the maximum power point reference voltage and employ a classical perturb and observe searching algorithm. The structure of the artificial neural network was obtained by numerical modelling using Matlab/Simulink. The artificial neural network was trained using Bayesian regularisation back-propagation algorithms and demonstrated a good prediction of the maximum power point. Relative number of Vmpp prediction errors in range of ±0.2V is 0.05% based on validation data.
The paper presents a new control strategy of management of transport companies operating in completive transport environment. It is aimed to optimise the headway of transport companies to provide the balance between costs and benefits of operation under competition. The model of transport system build using AnyLogic comprises agent-based and discrete-event techniques. The model combined two transport companies was investigated under condition of the competition between them. It was demonstrated that the control strategy can ensure the balance of interests of transport companies trying to find compromise between cost of operation and quality of service.
Introduction: After cellulose, lignin represents the most abundant biopolymer on earth that accounts for up to 18-35 % by weight of lignocellulose biomass. Today, it is a by-product of the paper and pulping industry. Although lignin is available in huge amounts, mainly in form of so called black liquor produced via Kraft-pulping, processes for the valorization of lignin are still limited [1]. Due to its hyperbranched polyphenol-like structure, lignin gained increasing interest as biobased building block for polymer synthesis [2]. The present work is focused on extraction and purification of lignin from industrial black liquor and synthesis of lignin-based polyurethanes.
Solar energy is one option to serve the rising global energy demand with low environmental Impact [1]. Building an energy system with a considerable share of solar power requires long-term investment and a careful investigation of potential sites. Therefore, understanding the impacts from varying regionally and locally determined meteorological conditions on solar energy production will influence energy yield projections. Clouds are moving on a short term timescale and have a high influence on the available solar radiation, as they absorb, reflect and scatter parts of the incoming light [2]. However, modeling photovoltaic (PV) power yields with a spectral resolution and local cloud information gives new insights on the atmospheric impact on solar energy.

The proper use of protective hoods on panel saws should reliably prevent severe injuries from (hand) contact with the blade or material kickbacks. It also should minimize long-term lung damages from fine-particle pollution. To achieve both purposes the hood must be adjusted properly by the operator for each workpiece to fit its height. After a work process is finished, the hood must be lowered down completely to the bench. Unfortunately, in practice the protective hood is fixed at a high position for most of the work time and herein loses its safety features. A system for an automatic height adjustment of the hood would increase comfort and safety. If the system can distinguish between workpieces and skin reliably, it furthermore will reduce occupational hazards for panel saw users. A functional demonstrator of such a system has been designed and implemented to show the feasibility of this approach. A specific optical sensor system is used to observe a point on the extended cut axis in front of the blade. The sensor determines the surface material reliably and measures the distance to the workpiece surface simultaneously. If the distance changes because of a workpiece fed to the machine, the control unit will set the motor-adjusted hood to the correct height. If the sensor detects skin, the hood will not be moved. In addition a camera observes the area under the hood. If there are no workpieces or offcuts left under the hood, it will be lowered back to the default position.
With the increasing average age of the population in many developed countries, afflictions like cardiovascular diseases have also increased. Exercising has a proven therapeutic effect on the cardiovascular system and can counteract this development. To avoid overstrain, determining an optimal training dose is crucial. In previous research, heart rate has been shown to be a good measure for cardiovascular behavior. Hence, prediction of the heart rate from work load information is an essential part in models used for training control. Most heart-rate-based models are described in the context of specific scenarios, and have been evaluated on unique datasets only. In this paper, we conduct a joint evaluation of existing approaches to model the cardiovascular system under a certain strain, and compare their predictive performance. For this purpose, we investigated some analytical models as well as some machine learning approaches in two scenarios: prediction over a certain time horizon into the future, and estimation of the relation between work load and heart rate over a whole training session.
Wireless sensor networks are widely used in a variety of fields including industrial environments. In case of a clustered network the location of cluster head affects the reliability of the network operation. Finding of the optimum location of the cluster head, therefore, is critical for the design of a network. This paper discusses the optimisation approach, based on the brute force algorithm, in the context of topology optimisation of a cluster structure centralised wireless sensor network. Two examples are given to verify the approach that demonstrate the implementation of the brute force algorithm to find an optimum location of the cluster head.
Reliable and regional differentiated power forecasts are required to guarantee an efficient and economic energy transition towards renewable energies. Amongst other renewable energy technologies, e.g. wind mills, photovoltaic systems are an essential component of this transition being cost-efficient and simply to install. Reliable power forecasts are however required for a grid integration of photovoltaic systems, which among other data requires high-resolution spatio-temporal global irradiance data. Hence the generation of robust reviewed global irradiance data is an essential contribution for the energy transition.
3D-Printing is an efficient method in the field of additive manufacturing. In order to optimize the properties of manufactured parts it is essential to adapt the curing behavior of the resin systems with respect to the requirements. Thus, effects of resin composition, e.g. due to different additives such as thickener and curing agents, on the curing behavior have to be known. As the resin transfers from a liquid to a solid glass the time dependent ion viscosity was measured using DEA with flat IDEX sensors. This allows for a sensitive measurement of resin changes as the ion viscosity changes two to four decades. The investigated resin systems are based on the monomers styrene and HEMA. To account for the effects of copolymerization in the calculation of the reaction kinetics it was assumed that the reaction can be considered as a homo-polymerization having a reaction order n?1. Then the measured ion viscosity curves are fitted with the solution of the reactions kinetics - the time dependent degree of conversion (DC-function) - for times exceeding the initiation phase representing the primary curing. The measured ion viscosity curves can nicely be fitted with the DC-function and the determined fit parameters distinguish distinctly between the investigated resin compositions.
During exercise, heart rate has proven to be a good measure in planning workouts. It is not only simple to measure but also well understood and has been used for many years for workout planning. To use heart rate to control physical exercise, a model which predicts future heart rate dependent on a given strain can be utilized. In this paper, we present a mathematical model based on convolution for predicting the heart rate response to strain with four physiologically explainable parameters. This model is based on the general idea of the Fitness-Fatigue model for performance analysis, but is revised here for heart rate analysis. Comparisons show that the Convolution model can compete with other known heart rate models. Furthermore, this new model can be improved by reducing the number of parameters. The remaining parameter seems to be a promising indicator of the actual subject’s fitness.
Analyzing training performance in sport is usually based on standardized test protocols and needs laboratory equipment, e.g., for measuring blood lactate concentration or other physiological body parameters. Avoiding special equipment and standardized test protocols, we show that it is possible to reach a quality of performance simulation comparable to the results of laboratory studies using training models with nothing but training data. For this purpose, we introduce a fitting concept for a performance model that takes the peculiarities of using training data for the task of performance diagnostics into account. With a specific way of data preprocessing, accuracy of laboratory studies can be achieved for about 50% of the tested subjects, while lower correlation of the other 50% can be explained.
The Fitness-Fatigue model (Calvert et al. 1976) is widely used for performance analysis. This antagonistic model is based on a fitness-term, a fatigue-term, and an initial basic level of performance. Instead of generic parameter values, individualizing the model needs a fitting of parameters. With fitted parameters, the model adapts to account for individual responses to strain. Even though in most cases fitting of recorded training data shows useful results, without modification the model cannot be simply used for prediction.

Polyurethanes achieved an exceptional position among the most important organic polymers due to their highly specific technological application areas. Polyurethanes represent a polyaddition product of isocyanate and diols. In terms of their enormous industrial importance, the chemistry of isocyanates has been extensively studied.
Biomass in general, wood and grasses in particular represent attractive renewable sources for the fabrication of so-called building block chemicals (1). Thus, environmentally benign antimicrobial nanoparticles based on a silver-infused lignin core were recently reported underlying the high potential for valorization of lignin (2). The contribution presents specific correlations regarding the structural differences of lignins depending on both: source (wood vs. grass) and isolation procedure (Kraft vs. Organosolv). Special focus will be drawn on detailed structure deviations caused by Miscanthus genotypes (M. gigantheus, M. robustus, M. sisnensis).
Neuroevolution methods evolve the weights of a neural network, and in some cases the topology, but little work has been done to analyze the effect of evolving the activation functions of individual nodes on network size, an important factor when training networks with a small number of samples. In this work we extend the neuroevolution algorithm NEAT to evolve the activation function of neurons in addition to the topology and weights of the network. The size and performance of networks produced using NEAT with uniform activation in all nodes, or homogenous networks, is compared to networks which contain a mixture of activation functions, or heterogenous networks. For a number of regression and classification benchmarks it is shown that, (1) qualitatively different activation functions lead to different results in homogeneous networks, (2) the heterogeneous version of NEAT is able to select well performing activation functions, (3) the produced heterogeneous networks are significantly smaller than homogeneous networks.

A new method for design space exploration and optimization, Surrogate-Assisted Illumination (SAIL), is presented. Inspired by robotics techniques designed to produce diverse repertoires of behaviors for use in damage recovery, SAIL produces diverse designs that vary according to features specified by the designer. By producing high-performing designs with varied combinations of user-defined features a map of the design space is created. This map illuminates the relationship between the chosen features and performance, and can aid designers in identifying promising design concepts. SAIL is designed for use with compu-tationally expensive design problems, such as fluid or structural dynamics, and integrates approximative models and intelligent sampling of the objective function to minimize the number of function evaluations required. On a 2D airfoil optimization problem SAIL is shown to produce hundreds of diverse designs which perform competitively with those found by state-of-the-art black box optimization. Its capabilities are further illustrated in a more expensive 3D aerodynamic optimization task.
The MAP-Elites algorithm produces a set of high-performing solutions that vary according to features defined by the user. This technique to 'illuminate' the problem space through the lens of chosen features has the potential to be a powerful tool for exploring design spaces, but is limited by the need for numerous evaluations. The Surrogate-Assisted Illumination (SAIL) algorithm, introduced here, integrates approximative models and intelligent sampling of the objective function to minimize the number of evaluations required by MAP-Elites.
The ability of SAIL to efficiently produce both accurate models and diverse high-performing solutions is illustrated on a 2D airfoil design problem. The search space is divided into bins, each holding a design with a different combination of features. In each bin SAIL produces a better performing solution than MAP-Elites, and requires several orders of magnitude fewer evaluations. The CMA-ES algorithm was used to produce an optimal design in each bin: with the same number of evaluations required by CMA-ES to find a near-optimal solution in a single bin, SAIL finds solutions of similar quality in every bin.
Evolutionary illumination is a recent technique that allows producing many diverse, optimal solutions in a map of manually defined features. To support the large amount of objective function evaluations, surrogate model assistance was recently introduced. Illumination models need to represent many more, diverse optimal regions than classical surrogate models. In this PhD thesis, we propose to decompose the sample set, decreasing model complexity, by hierarchically segmenting the training set according to their coordinates in feature space. An ensemble of diverse models can then be trained to serve as a surrogate to illumination.

Recent approaches in scaffold engineering for bone defects feature hybrid hydrogels made of a polymeric network (retains water and provides light and porous structures) and inorganic ceramics (add mechanical strength and improve cell-adhesion). Innovative scaffold materials should also induce bone tissue formation and incorporation of stem cells (osteogenic differentiation) and/or growth factors (inducing/supporting differentiation). Recently, purinergic P2X and P2Y receptors have been found to significantly influence the osteogenic differentiation process of human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSC). (1) Aim of this work is to develop polysaccharide (PS) composites to be used as scaffolds containing complementary receptor ligands to enable guided stem cell differentiation towards bone formation.
