Although p27 plays a central role in cell cycle regulation, its role in breast cancer prognosis is controversial. Furthermore, the p27 gene CDKN1B carries a polymorphism with unknown functional relevance. This study was designed to evaluate p27 expression and p27 genotyping with respect to early breast cancer prognosis. 279 patients with infiltrating metastasis-free breast cancer were included in this study. p27 expression was determined in tumor tissue specimens from 261 patients by immunohistochemistry. From 108 patients, the CDKN1B genotype was examined by PCR and subsequent direct sequencing. 55.2% of the tumors were considered p27 positive. p27 expression did not correlate with any of the established parameters except for nodal involvement but significantly correlated to prolonged disease-free survival. In 35% of the tumors analyzed, the CDKN1B gene showed a polymorphism at codon 109 (V109G). The V109G polymorphism correlated with greater nodal involvement. In the node-negative subgroup, V109G correlated significantly with a shortened disease-free survival. In conclusion, the determination of the CDKN1B genotype might be a powerful tool for the prognosis of patients with early breast cancer.

In interactive graphics it is often necessary to introduce large changes in the image in response to updated information about the state of the system. Updating the local state immediately would lead to a sudden transient change in the image, which could be perceptually disruptive. However, introducing the correction gradually using smoothing operations increases latency and degrades precision. It would be beneficial to be able to introduce graphic updates immediately if they were not perceptible. In the paper the use of saccade-contingent updates is exploited to hide graphic updates during the period of visual suppression that accompanies a rapid, or saccadic, eye movement. Sensitivity to many visual stimuli is known to be reduced during a change in fixation compared to when the eye is still. For example, motion of a small object is harder to detect during a rapid eye movement (saccade) than during a fixation. To evaluate if these findings generalize to large scene changes in a virtual environment, gaze behavior in a 180 degree hemispherical display was recorded and analyzed. This data was used to develop a saccade detection algorithm adapted to virtual environments. The detectability of trans-saccadic scene changes was evaluated using images of high resolution real world scenes. The images were translated by 0.4, 0.8 or 1.2 degrees of visual angle during horizontal saccades. The scene updates were rarely noticeable for saccades with a duration greater than 58 ms. The detection rate for the smallest translation was just 6.25%. Qualitatively, even when trans-saccadic scene changes were detectible, they were much less disturbing than equivalent changes in the absence of a saccade.
Fasting Intact Proinsulin Is a Highly Specific Predictor of Insulin Resistance in Type 2 Diabetes
(2004)
OBJECTIVE—In later stages of type 2 diabetes, proinsulin and proinsulin-like molecules are secreted in increasing amounts with insulin. A recently introduced chemiluminescence assay is able to detect the uncleaved “intact” proinsulin and differentiate it from proinsulin-like molecules. This investigation explored the predictive value of intact proinsulin as an insulin resistance marker.
Machine Learning seems to offer the solution to the central problem in recommender systems: Learning to recommend interesting items from observations. However, one tends to run into similar problems each time one tries to apply out-of-the-box solutions from Machine Learning. This article relates the problem of recommendation by user modeling closely to the machine learning problem and explicates some inherent dilemmas. A few examples will illustrate specific approaches and discuss underlying assumptions on the domain or how learned hypotheses relate to requirements on the user model. The article concludes with a tentative 'checklist' that one might like to consider when thinking about to use Machine Learning in User Adaptive environments such as recommender systems.

For the winter 1999/2000 transport of air masses out of the vortex to mid-latitudes and ozone destruction inside and outside the northern polar vortex is studied to quantify the impact of earlier winter (before March) polar ozone destruction on mid-latitude ozone.
Nearly 112 000 trajectories are started on 1 December 1999 on 6 different potential temperature levels between 500–600 K and for a subset of these trajectories photo-chemical box-model calculations are performed. We linked a decline of −0.9% of mid-latitude ozone in this layer occurring in January and February 2000 to ozone destruction inside the vortex and successive transport of these air masses to mid-latitudes.
Further, the impact of denitrification, PSC-occurrence and anthropogenic chlorine loading on future stratospheric ozone is determined by applying various scenarios. Lower stratospheric temperatures and denitrification were found to play the most important role in the future evolution of polar ozone depletion.

Most VE-frameworks try to support many different input and output devices. They do not concentrate so much on the rendering because this is tradi- tionally done by graphics workstation. In this short paper we present a modern VE framework that has a small kernel and is able to use different renderers. This includes sound renderers, physics renderers and software based graphics renderers. While our VE framework, named basho is still under development we have an alpha version running under Linux and MacOS X.
Interactive rendering of complex models has many applications in the Virtual Reality Continuum. The oil&gas industry uses interactive visualizations of huge seismic data sets to evaluate and plan drilling operations. The automotive industry evaluates designs based on very detailed models. Unfortunately, many of these very complex geometric models cannot be displayed with interactive frame rates on graphics workstations. This is due to the limited scalability of their graphics performance. Recently there is a trend to use networked standard PCs to solve this problem. Care must be taken however, because of nonexistent shared memory with clustered PCs. All data and commands have to be sent across the network. It turns out that the removal of the network bottleneck is a challenging problem to solve in this context. In this article we present some approaches for network aware parallel rendering on commodity hardware. These strategies are technological as well as algorithmic solutions.
