Before applying multigrid methods to a project, mathematicians, scientists, and engineers need to answer questions related to the quality of convergence, whether a development will pay out, whether multigrid will work for a particular application, and what the numerical properties are. Practical Fourier Analysis for Multigrid Methods uses a detailed and systematic description of local Fourier k-grid (k=1,2,3) analysis for general systems of partial differential equations to provide a framework that answers these questions.
This volume contains software that confirms written statements about convergence and efficiency of algorithms and is easily adapted to new applications. Providing theoretical background and the linkage between theory and practice, the text and software quickly combine learning by reading and learning by doing. We discuss our recent discovery of the giant radio emission from the Crab pulsar at its high frequency components (HFCs) phases and show the polarization characteristic of these pulses. This leads us to a suggestion that there is no difference in the emission mechanism of the main pulse (MP), interpulse (IP) and HFCs. We briefly review the size distributions of the Crab giant radio pulses (GRPs) and discuss general characteristics of the GRP phenomenon in the Crab and other pulsars.
Autoantibodies in sera from patients with autoimmune diseases have long been known and have become diagnostic tools. Analysis of their functional role again became popular with the availability of mice mutant for several genes of the complement and Fcγ receptor (FcγR) systems. Evidence from different inflammatory models suggests that both systems are interconnected in a hierarchical way. The complement system mediators such as complement component 5a (C5a) might be crucial in the communication between the complement system and FcγR-expressing cells. The split complement protein C5a is known to inactivate cells by its G-protein-coupled receptor and to be involved in the transcriptional regulation of FcγRs, thereby contributing to the complex regulation of autoimmune disease.
The objective of the presented approach is to develop a 3D-reconstruction method for micro organisms from sequences of microscopic images by varying the level-of-focus. The approach is limited to translucent silicatebased marine and freshwater organisms (e.g. radiolarians). The proposed 3D-reconstruction method exploits the connectivity of similarly oriented and spatially adjacent edge elements in consecutive image layers. This yields a 3D-mesh representing the global shape of the objects together with details of the inner structure. Possible applications can be found in comparative morphology or hydrobiology, where e.g. deficiencies in growth and structure during incubation in toxic water or gravity effects on metabolism have to be determined.

An aircraft plume model has been developed on the basis of two coupled trajectory box models. Two boxes, one for plume and one for background conditions, are coupled by means of a mixing parameterization based on turbulence theory. The model considers comprehensive gas phase chemistry for the tropopause region including acetone, ethane and their oxidation products. Heterogeneous halogen, N2O5 and HOx chemistry on various types of background and aircraft-induced aerosols (liquid and ice) is considered, using state-of-the-art solubility dependent uptake coefficients for liquid phase reactions. The microphysical scheme allows for coagulation, gas-diffusive particle growth and evaporation, so that the particle development from 1s after emission to several days can be simulated. Model results are shown, studying emissions into the upper troposphere as well as into the lowermost stratosphere for contrail and non-contrail conditions. We show the microphysical and chemical evolution of spreading plumes and use the concept of mean plume encounter time, tl, to define effective emission and perturbation indices (EEIs and EPIs) for the North Atlantic Flight Corridor (NAFC) showing EEI(NOy) and EPI(O3) for various background conditions, such as relative humidity, local time of emission, and seasonal variations. Our results show a high sensitivity of EEI and EPIs on the exact conditions under which emissions take place. The difference of EEIs with and without considering plume processes indicates that these processes cannot be neglected.
This paper describes the work done at our Lab to improve visual and other quality of Virtual Environments. To be able to achieve better quality we built a new Virtual Environments framework called basho. basho is a renderer independent VE framework. Although renderers are not limited to graphics renderers we first concentrated on improving visual quality. Independence is gained from designing basho to have a small kernel and several plug-ins.
We present basho, a light weight and easily extendable virtual environment (VE) framework. Key benefits of this framework are independence of the scene element representation and the rendering API. The main goal was to make VE applications flexible without the need to change them, not only by being independent from input and output devices. As an example, with basho it is possible to switch from local illumination models to ray tracing by just replacing the renderer. Or to replace the graphical representation of the scene elements without the need to change the application. Furthermore it is possible to mix rendering technologies within a scene. This paper emphasises on the abstraction of the scene element representation.

Analysis of Synthetic Polymers and Copolymers by Pyrolysis- Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry

Structural analysis and the study of degradation properties are important in order to understand and improve performance characteristics of synthetic polymers and copolymers in many industrial applications. Polymers/copolymers are inherently difficult to analyze because of their high molecular weight and lack of volatility. Traditionally, various analytical techniques are used to characterize polymers/copolymers including physical testing (rheological testing), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, size-exclusion chromatography (SEC)/gel permeation chromatography (GPC), and mass spectrometry (MS). Often, time consuming sample preparation, including hydrolysis, dissolution, or derivatization is needed before analysis.
One of the issues that has been debated in the context of fairly open learning partnerships such as tandem learning has been whether and, if so, how much pedagogical support should be provided. Another issue is how do language learners who have grown accustomed to maximising their learning through comprehensible input and output make the transition to a reciprocal learning partnership where they are supposed to switch between the roles of learner and expert or resource. The three principles behind tandem learning are bilingualism; reciprocity; and learner autonomy. At Trinity College Dublin we have conducted extensive research into tandem learning in object-oriented Multiple User Domains (MOOs) since 1998. Of the three tandem principles, we found that balanced bilingualism, where both languages are used equally in the exchange, is difficult to achieve, particularly though not surprisingly in partnerships where L2 proficiency differs substantially. We think that technology, at least in MOOs, can contribute towards a solution to the problem. The bilingual tandem analyser (BTA) analyses MOO input while users are communicating and gives feedback to learners (and possibly teachers) on bilingualism in the exchange. Here, we discuss what attitudes towards bilingualism learners bring towards the tandem exchange and how they react to the BTA as a tool to monitor and regulate bilingualism: will learners perceive balanced bilingualism as a necessary principle of the partnership; what efforts do they make to keep the balance between the languages; how do they see the BTA: as an instrument of control, directed by the teacher; or do they perceive it as a useful tool to support their tandem exchanges?
