Mutations in ACY1, the gene encoding aminoacylase 1, cause a novel inborn error of metabolism

Background: Type 2 diabetes mellitus is associated with increased cardiovascular risk. One laboratory marker for cardiovascular risk assessment is high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP).
Methods: This cross-sectional study attempted to analyze the association of hsCRP levels with insulin resistance, β-cell dysfunction and macrovascular disease in 4270 non-insulin-treated patients with type 2 diabetes [2146 male, 2124 female; mean age ±SD, 63.9±11.1years; body mass index (BMI) 30.1±5.5kg/m2; disease duration 5.4±5.6years; hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) 6.8±1.3%]. It consisted of a single morning visit with collection of a fasting blood sample. Observational parameters included several clinical scores and laboratory biomarkers.
Results: Stratification into cardiovascular risk groups according to hsCRP levels revealed that 934 patients had low risk (hsCRP <1mg/L), 1369 patients had intermediate risk (hsCRP 1–3mg/L), 1352 patients had high risk (hsCRP >3–10mg/L), and 610 patients had unspecific hsCRP elevation (>10mg/L). Increased hsCRP levels were associated with other indicators of diabetes-related cardiovascular risk (homeostatic model assessment, intact proinsulin, insulin, BMI, β-cell dysfunction, all p<0.001), but showed no correlation with disease duration or glucose control. The majority of the patients were treated with diet (34.1%; hsCRP levels 2.85±2.39mg/L) or metformin monotherapy (21.1%; 2.95±2.50mg/L hsCRP). The highest hsCRP levels were observed in patients treated with sulfonylurea (17.0%; 3.00±2.43mg/L).
Conclusions: Our results indicate that hsCRP may be used as a cardiovascular risk marker in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and should be evaluated in further prospective studies.
High-sensitivity C-reactive protein as cardiovascular risk marker in patients with diabetes mellitus

With the rapid advances in multimedia content delivery technologies, there is an increasing challenge for efficient Quality of Service (QoS) based multicast transport in mobile Internet environment. This paper discusses architectural approach for provision of multicast services in heterogeneous mobile IPv6 environment using context transfer. Following issues of QoS based mobile multicast transport are addressed: - Application of context transfer between access routers for seamless handover of active multicast services; - Adaptation of multicast group management and routing designed for wired IPv6 infrastructures to heterogeneous mobile environment; - Candidate access router discovery and context aware user interfaces for optimised handover; - Reliable mobile multicast for content delivery supported by context transfer at access routers; - Distributed QoS management of multicast services in heterogeneous mobile environment. The work is part of the mobile architecture developed in the EU IST project DAIDALOS.

Recent studies have shown that through a careful combination of multiple sensory channels, so called multisensory binding effects can be achieved that can be beneficial for collision detection and texture recognition feedback. During the design of a new pen-input device called Tactylus, specific focus was put on exploring multisensory effects of audiotactile cues to create a new, but effective way to interact in virtual environments with the purpose to overcome several of the problems noticed in current devices.
Context.We present the technology and first scientific results of a new generation of very flexible and sensitive spectrometers, well-suited for the needs of spectral-line radio and (sub)millimeter astronomy: Fast Fourier Transform Spectrometers (FFTS), which are in operation at the Atacama Pathfinder EXperiment (APEX) telescope.
Aims. The FFTS for APEX is a novel high-resolution 2 x 1 GHz bandwidth digital spectrometer backend. Due to its high frequency resolution, and the demonstrated capability of operating at high altitude, the FFTS became the facility spectrometer for spectral line observations at APEX.
Methods. The FFTS is based on one of the currently most powerful digitizer/analyzer boards available from Acqiris, Switzerland. The board incorporates two 1 Gsamples/s analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) with 8-bit resolution which feed an on-board complex field programmable gate array (FPGA) chip. The enormous processing power by today's FPGAs allow for a complete real-time FFT signal processing pipeline to decompose a 1 GHz band into 16 384 spectral channels in just one chip.
Results. Since May 2005 an MPIfR FFTS has been extensively used in all regular spectroscopic science observations. The performance at APEX was demonstrated to be very reliable and as good as measured in the first laboratory tests which finally led to the request to provide a second, facility type FFTS for APEX. The unit was delivered and commissioned in March this year.
Conclusions. Using a commercially available digitizer board, it was possible to develop a complete FFTS in only a few months. Successful observations at APEX demonstrate that this new generation of FPGA-based spectrometers easily matching and superseding the performance of older technology spectrometers and can built up much more easily. Furthermore, the by now available class of new high-speed ADCs and the continuous increase of FPGA processing power makes it very likely that FFTS can be pushed to broader bandwidth and even more spectral channels in the near future.
Reconciling solvent effects on rotamer populations in carbohydrates - A joint MD and NMR analysis

This work introduces Grid computing, showsits use in eHealth environments and elicits trends towards the integration of custodians in eHealth Grids. It considers security and privacy requirements for the use of Grid computing in eHealth scenariosand discusses the possible integration of different types of data custodians. Finally the paper concludes and gives an outlook on the development and deployment of eHealth Gridsinthe near future.
