Intention: Within the research project EnerSHelF (Energy-Self-Sufficiency for Health Facilities in Ghana), i. a. energy-meteorological and load-related measurement data are collected, for which an overview of the availability is to be presented on a poster.
Context: In Ghana, the total electricity consumed has almost doubled between 2008 and 2018 according to the Energy Commission of Ghana. This goes along with an unstable power grid, resulting in power outages whenever electricity consumption peaks. The blackouts called "dumsor" in Ghana, pose a severe burden to the healthcare sector. Innovative solutions are needed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve energy and health access.
Microwave Kinetic Inductance Detectors have great potential for large very sensitive detector arrays for use in, for example, ground and spaced based sub?mm imaging. Being intrinsically readout in the frequency domain, they are particularly suited for frequency domain multiplexing allowing 1000s of devices to be readout with one pair of coaxial cables. However, this moves the complexity of the detector from the cryogenics to the warm electronics. We present the use of a readout based on a Fast Fourier transform Spectrometer, showing no deterioration of the noise performance compared to low noise analog mixing while allowing high multiplexing ratios (>100). We present use of this technique to multiplex 44 MKIDs, while this and similar setups are regularly now being used in our array development. This development will help the realization of large cameras, particularly in the short term for ground based astronomy.
An electronic display often has to present information from several sources. This contribution reports about an approach, in which programmable logic (FPGA) synchronises and combines several graphics inputs. The application area is computer graphics, especially rendering of large 3D models, which is a computing intensive task. Therefore, complex scenes are generated on parallel systems and merged to give the requested output image. So far, the transportation of intermediate results is often done by a local area network. However, as this can be a limiting factor, the new approach removes this bottleneck and combines the graphic signals with an FPGA.

Construction kit for low-cost vibration analysis systems based on low-cost acceleration sensors

This paper proposes a new artificial neural network-based maximum power point tracker for photovoltaic application. This tracker significantly improves efficiency of the photovoltaic system with series-connection of photovoltaic modules in non-uniform irradiance on photovoltaic array surfaces. The artificial neural network uses irradiance and temperature sensors to generate the maximum power point reference voltage and employ a classical perturb and observe searching algorithm. The structure of the artificial neural network was obtained by numerical modelling using Matlab/Simulink. The artificial neural network was trained using Bayesian regularisation back-propagation algorithms and demonstrated a good prediction of the maximum power point. Relative number of Vmpp prediction errors in range of ±0.2V is 0.05% based on validation data.
Cost efficient energy monitoring in existing large buildings demands for autonomous indoor sensors with low power consumption, high performance in multipath fading channels and economic implementation. Good performance in multipath fading channels can be achieved with noncoherent chaotic modulation schemes such as chaos on-off keying (COOK) or differential chaos shift keying (DCSK). While COOK stands out in the area of power consumption, DCSK excels when it comes to its performance in noisy and multipath fading channels. This paper evaluates a combination of both schemes for autonomous indoor sensors. The simulation results show 50% less power consumption than DCSK and more than 3dB SNR gain in Rayleigh fading channels at BER=10-3 as compared to COOK, making it a promising candidate for low power transmission in autonomous wireless indoor sensors. We further present an enhanced version of this scheme showing another 1 dB SNR improvement, but at 25% less power consumption than DCSK.
Wireless sensor networks are widely used in a variety of fields including industrial environments. In case of a clustered network the location of cluster head affects the reliability of the network operation. Finding of the optimum location of the cluster head, therefore, is critical for the design of a network. This paper discusses the optimisation approach, based on the brute force algorithm, in the context of topology optimisation of a cluster structure centralised wireless sensor network. Two examples are given to verify the approach that demonstrate the implementation of the brute force algorithm to find an optimum location of the cluster head.

The representation, or encoding, utilized in evolutionary algorithms has a substantial effect on their performance. Examination of the suitability of widely used representations for quality diversity optimization (QD) in robotic domains has yielded inconsistent results regarding the most appropriate encoding method. Given the domain-dependent nature of QD, additional evidence from other domains is necessary. This study compares the impact of several representations, including direct encoding, a dictionary-based representation, parametric encoding, compositional pattern producing networks, and cellular automata, on the generation of voxelized meshes in an architecture setting. The results reveal that some indirect encodings outperform direct encodings and can generate more diverse solution sets, especially when considering full phenotypic diversity. The paper introduces a multi-encoding QD approach that incorporates all evaluated representations in the same archive. Species of encodings compete on the basis of phenotypic features, leading to an approach that demonstrates similar performance to the best single-encoding QD approach. This is noteworthy, as it does not always require the contribution of the best-performing single encoding.
Accurate forecasting of solar irradiance is crucial for the integration of solar energy into the power grid, power system planning, and the operation of solar power plants. The Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model, with its solar radiation (WRF-Solar) extension, has been used to forecast solar irradiance in various regions worldwide. However, the application of the WRF-Solar model for global horizontal irradiance (GHI) forecasting in West Africa, specifically in Ghana, has not been studied. This study aims to evaluate the performance of the WRF-Solar model for GHI forecasting in Ghana, focusing on 3 health centers (Kologo, Kumasi and Akwatia) for the year 2021. We applied a two one-way nested domain (D1=15 km and D2=3 km) to investigate the ability of the WRF solar model to forecast GHI up to 72 hours in advance under different atmospheric conditions. The initial and lateral boundary conditions were taken from the ECMWF operational forecasts. In addition, the optical aerosol depth (AOD) data at 550 nm from the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) were considered. The study uses statistical metrics such as mean bias error (MBE), root mean square error (RMSE), to evaluate the performance of the WRF-Solar model with the observational data obtained from automatic weather stations in the three health centers in Ghana. The results of this study will contribute to the understanding of the capabilities and limitations of the WRF-Solar model for forecasting GHI in West Africa, particularly in Ghana, and provide valuable information for stakeholders involved in solar energy generation and grid integration towards optimized management of in the region.

The Anomalous X‐ray Pulsar 4U 0142+61 is the only neutron star where it is believed that one of the long searched‐for ‘fallback’ disks has been detected in the mid‐IR by Wang et al. [1] using Spitzer. Such a disk originates from material falling back to the NS after the supernova. We search for cold circumstellar material in the 90 GHz continuum using the Plateau de Bure Interferometer. No millimeter flux is detected at the position of 4U 0142+61, the upper flux limit is 150 μJy corresponding to the 3σ noise rms level. The re‐processed Spitzer MIPS 24μm data presented previously by Wang et al. [2] show some indication of flux enhancement at the position of the neutron star, albeit below the 3σ statistical significance limit. At far infrared wavelengths the source flux densities are probably below the Herschel confusion limits.
Solar energy is one option to serve the rising global energy demand with low environmental impact. Building an energy system with a considerable share of solar power requires long-term investment and a careful investigation of potential sites. Therefore, understanding the impacts from varying regionally and locally determined meteorological conditions on solar energy production will influence energy yield projections.
Solar energy is one option to serve the rising global energy demand with low environmental Impact [1]. Building an energy system with a considerable share of solar power requires long-term investment and a careful investigation of potential sites. Therefore, understanding the impacts from varying regionally and locally determined meteorological conditions on solar energy production will influence energy yield projections. Clouds are moving on a short term timescale and have a high influence on the available solar radiation, as they absorb, reflect and scatter parts of the incoming light [2]. However, modeling photovoltaic (PV) power yields with a spectral resolution and local cloud information gives new insights on the atmospheric impact on solar energy.
