Green infrastructure has been widely recognized for the benefits to human health and biodiversity conservation. However, knowledge of the qualities and requirements of such spaces and structures for the effective delivery of the range of ecosystem services expected is still limited, as well as the identification of trade-offs between services. In this study, we apply the One Health approach in the context of green spaces to investigate how urban park characteristics affect human mental health and wildlife support outcomes and identify synergies and trade-offs between these dimensions. Here we show that perceived restorativeness of park users varies significantly across sites and is mainly affected by safety and naturalness perceptions. In turn, these perceptions are driven by objective indicators of quality, such as maintenance of facilities and vegetation structure, and subjective estimations of biodiversity levels. The presence of water bodies benefited both mental health and wildlife. However, high tree canopy coverage provided greater restoration potential whereas a certain level of habitat heterogeneity was important to support a wider range of bird species requirements. To reconcile human and wildlife needs in green spaces, cities should strategically implement a heterogeneous green infrastructure network that considers trade-offs and maximizes synergies between these dimensions.
Trust your guts: fostering embodied knowledge and sustainable practices through voice interaction

Despite various attempts to prevent food waste and motivate conscious food handling, household members find it difficult to correctly assess the edibility of food. With the rise of ambient voice assistants, we did a design case study to support households’ in situ decision-making process in collaboration with our voice agent prototype, Fischer Fritz. Therefore, we conducted 15 contextual inquiries to understand food practices at home. Furthermore, we interviewed six fish experts to inform the design of our voice agent on how to guide consumers and teach food literacy. Finally, we created a prototype and discussed with 15 consumers its impact and capability to convey embodied knowledge to the human that is engaged as sensor. Our design research goes beyond current Human-Food Interaction automation approaches by emphasizing the human-food relationship in technology design and demonstrating future complementary human-agent collaboration with the aim to increase humans’ competence to sense, think, and act.
Advocates of autonomous driving predict that the occupation of taxi driver could be made obsolete by shared autonomous vehicles (SAV) in the long term. Conducting interviews with German taxi drivers, we investigate how they perceive the changes caused by advancing automation for the future of their business. Our study contributes insights into how the work of taxi drivers could change given the advent of autonomous driving: While the task of driving could be taken over by SAVs for standard trips, taxi drivers are certain that other areas of their work such as providing supplementary services and assistance to passengers would constitute a limit to such forms of automation, but probably involving a shifting role for the taxi drivers, one which focuses on the sociality of the work. Our findings illustrate how taxi drivers see the future of their work, suggesting design implications for tools that take various forms of assistance into account, and demonstrating how important it is to consider taxi drivers in the co-design of future taxis and SAV services.
The utilization of simulation procedures is gaining increasing attention in the product development of extrusion blow molded parts. However, some simulation steps, like the simulation of shrinkage and warpage, are still associated with uncertainties. The reason for this is on the one hand a lack of standardized interfaces for the transfer of simulation data between different simulation tools, and on the other hand the complex time-, temperature- and process-dependent material behavior of the used semi crystalline polymers. Using a new vendor neutral interface standard for the data transfer, the shrinkage analysis of a simple blow molded part is investigated and compared to experimental data. A linear viscoelastic material model in combination with an orthotropic process- and temperature-dependent thermal expansion coefficient is used for the shrinkage prediction. A good agreement is observed. Finally, critical parameters in the simulation models that strongly influence the shrinkage analysis are identified by a sensitivity study.
Despite the increasing interest in single family offices (SFOs) as an investment owned by an entrepreneurial family, research on SFOs is still in its infancy. In particular, little is known about the capital structures of SFOs or the roots of SFO heterogeneity regarding financial decisions. By drawing on a hand-collected sample of 104 SFOs and private equity (PE) firms, we compare the financing choices of these two investor types in the context of direct entrepreneurial investments (DEIs). Our data thereby provide empirical evidence that SFOs are less likely to raise debt than PE firms, suggesting that SFOs follow pecking-order theory. Regarding the heterogeneity of the financial decisions of SFOs, our data indicate that the relationship between SFOs and debt financing is reinforced by the idiosyncrasies of entrepreneurial families, such as higher levels of owner management and a higher firm age. Surprisingly, our data do not support a moderating effect for the emphasis placed on socioemotional wealth (SEW).
The cooperation between researchers and practitioners during the different stages of the research process is promoted as it can be of benefit to both society and research supporting processes of ‘transformation’. While acknowledging the important potential of research–practice–collaborations (RPCs), this paper reflects on RPCs from a political-economic perspective to also address potential unintended adverse effects on knowledge generation due to divergent interests, incomplete information or the unequal distribution of resources. Asymmetries between actors may induce distorted and biased knowledge and even help produce or exacerbate existing inequalities. Potential merits and limitations of RPCs, therefore, need to be gauged. Taking RPCs seriously requires paying attention to these possible tensions—both in general and with respect to international development research, in particular: On the one hand, there are attempts to contribute to societal change and ethical concerns of equity at the heart of international development research, and on the other hand, there is the relative risk of encountering asymmetries more likely.
Research-Practice-Collaborations Addressing One Health and Urban Transformation. A Case Study

One Health is an integrative approach at the interface of humans, animals and the environment, which can be implemented as Research-Practice-Collaboration (RPC) for its interdisciplinarity and intersectoral focus on the co-production of knowledge. To exemplify this, the present commentary shows the example of the Forschungskolleg “One Health and Urban Transformation” funded by the Ministry of Culture and Science of the State Government of Nord Rhine Westphalia in Germany. After analysis, the factors identified for a better implementation of RPC for One Health were the ones that allowed for constant communication and the reduction of power asymmetries between practitioners and academics in the co-production of knowledge. In this light, the training of a new generation of scientists at the boundaries of different disciplines that have mediation skills between academia and practice is an important contribution with great implications for societal change that can aid the further development of RPC.
The genetic basis of brain tumor development is poorly understood. Here, leukocyte DNA of 21 patients from 15 families with ≥ 2 glioma cases each was analyzed by whole-genome or targeted sequencing. As a result, we identified two families with rare germline variants, p.(A592T) or p.(A817V), in the E-cadherin gene CDH1 that co-segregate with the tumor phenotype, consisting primarily of oligodendrogliomas, WHO grade II/III, IDH-mutant, 1p/19q-codeleted (ODs). Rare CDH1 variants, previously shown to predispose to gastric and breast cancer, were significantly overrepresented in these glioma families (13.3%) versus controls (1.7%). In 68 individuals from 28 gastric cancer families with pathogenic CDH1 germline variants, brain tumors, including a pituitary adenoma, were observed in three cases (4.4%), a significantly higher prevalence than in the general population (0.2%). Furthermore, rare CDH1 variants were identified in tumor DNA of 6/99 (6%) ODs. CDH1 expression was detected in undifferentiated and differentiating oligodendroglial cells isolated from rat brain. Functional studies using CRISPR/Cas9-mediated knock-in or stably transfected cell models demonstrated that the identified CDH1 germline variants affect cell membrane expression, cell migration and aggregation. E-cadherin ectodomain containing variant p.(A592T) had an increased intramolecular flexibility in a molecular dynamics simulation model. E-cadherin harboring intracellular variant p.(A817V) showed reduced β-catenin binding resulting in increased cytosolic and nuclear β-catenin levels reverted by treatment with the MAPK interacting serine/threonine kinase 1 inhibitor CGP 57380. Our data provide evidence for a role of deactivating CDH1 variants in the risk and tumorigenesis of neuroepithelial and epithelial brain tumors, particularly ODs, possibly via WNT/β-catenin signaling.
Hintergrund: Empirische Studien zeigen, dass mehr als zwei Drittel der Beschäftigten trotz Krankheit zur Arbeit gehen. Dieser sog. Präsentismus bringt sowohl gesundheitliche und motivationale Risiken für die Mitarbeiter als auch wirtschaftliche Risiken für die Organisation mit sich.
Ziel der Arbeit: Die durchgeführten Studien fokussieren Möglichkeiten zur Verringerung der negativen gesundheitlichen Effekte und entwickeln Maßnahmen zur generellen Vermeidung von Präsentismus am spezifischen Setting Hochschule.
Methode: An einer deutschen Hochschule erfolgte eine quantitative Befragung (n = 308) zur Prävalenz von Präsentismus, dessen Zusammenhang mit körperlichen Beschwerden untersucht wurde. Weiterhin wurden potenziell moderierende Effekte der Ressourcen Erholung, Achtsamkeit und Work-Life-Balance (WLB) betrachtet. Eine qualitative Studie explorierte auf Grundlage von Interviews (n = 11, qualitative Inhaltsanalyse) Gründe für Präsentismus und potenzielle Maßnahmen, um diesem entgegenzuwirken.
Ergebnisse: Die quantitativen Ergebnisse zeigen, dass Präsentismus im Hochschulkontext vertreten ist und körperliche Beschwerden begünstigt. Die Ressourcen Erholung, Achtsamkeit und WLB können bei hoher Ausprägung die negativen gesundheitlichen Effekte von Präsentismus abschwächen. Bei niedriger Ausprägung verstärken sie die Effekte. Die qualitative Analyse machte deutlich, dass quantitative Arbeitsbelastung, Pflichtgefühl sowie das Gefühl, noch leistungsfähig zu sein, zentrale Gründe für Präsentismus sind und zum Beispiel die Unterstützung eines gesundheitsförderlichen Organisationsklimas oder Vertretungsregelungen geeignete Gegenmaßnahmen darstellen.
Diskussion: Die Ergebnisse werden vor dem Hintergrund verhaltens- und verhältnispräventiver Maßnahmen diskutiert und praktische Implikationen abgeleitet.
The epithelial sodium channel (ENaC) is a heterotrimeric ion channel that plays a key role in sodium and water homeostasis in tetrapod vertebrates. In the aldosterone-sensitive distal nephron, hormonally controlled ENaC expression matches dietary sodium intake to its excretion. Furthermore, ENaC mediates sodium absorption across the epithelia of the colon, sweat ducts, reproductive tract, and lung. ENaC is a constitutively active ion channel and its expression, membrane abundance, and open probability (PO) are controlled by multiple intracellular and extracellular mediators and mechanisms [9]. Aberrant ENaC regulation is associated with severe human diseases, including hypertension, cystic fibrosis, pulmonary edema, pseudohypoaldosteronism type 1, and nephrotic syndrome [9].
A series of reactive binaphthyl‐diimine‐based dopants is prepared and investigated with respect to their potential for the chiral induction of structural coloration in nematic liquid crystal mixture E7 and the selective photonic sensing of nitrogen dioxide (NO2). Studies of the helical twisting power (HTP) in 4‐cyano‐4′‐pentylbiphenyl (5CB) reveal HTP values as high as 375 µm‐1 and the tremendous impact of structural compatibility and changes of the dihedral binaphthyl angle on the efficiency of the chiral transfer. Detailed investigation of the sensing capabilities of the systems reveals an extraordinarily high selectivity for NO2 and a response to concentrations as low as 100 ppm. The systems show a direct response to the analyte gas leading to a concentration‐dependent shift of the reflectance wavelength of up to several hundred nanometers. Incorporation of copper ions remarkably improves the sensor's properties in terms of sensitivity and selectivity, enabling the tailored tweaking of the system's properties.
Vor dem Hintergrund der Covid-19-Pandemie hat sich das Home-Office in Deutschland seit dem Jahr 2020 weit verbreitet und wird seitdem bei vielen Arbeitgebern als neue Arbeitsmethode genutzt. Der Einsatz von Home-Office kann verschiedene positive als auch negative Effekte auf die Beschäftigten und den Arbeitgeber sowie die Gesellschaft allgemein haben. Damit von möglichst vielen positiven Effekten profitiert werden kann, ist ein gutes Home-Office Konzept erforderlich. Welche Anforderungen an ein solches Konzept bestehen und welche Voraussetzungen grundlegend mit der Nutzung von Home-Office verbunden sind, wird in dem Beitrag aufgezeigt. Dabei werden von technischen bis hin zu sozialen Aspekten Anforderungen verschiedener Arten berücksichtigt, welche durch eine durch den Autor durchgeführte Studie gebildet worden sind. Im Fokus dieses Beitrages sollen die kritischen Erfolgsfaktoren für das ideale Arbeiten im Home-Office stehen, also die Anforderungen, welche ausschlaggebend für die erfolgreiche Umsetzung eines Home-Office Konzeptes sind und Einfluss auf die wahrgenommenen Effekte des Home-Office haben. Die im Beitrag aufgeführte Studie des Autors wurde im Rahmen der Abschlussarbeit von Herrn Jeske durchgeführt, auf welcher der Beitrag basiert.
Improving insect conservation management through insect monitoring and stakeholder involvement

In recent years, the decline of insect biodiversity and the imminent loss of provided ecosystem functions and services has received public attention and raised the demand for political action. The complex, multi-causal contributors to insect decline require a broad interdisciplinary and cross-sectoral approach that addresses ecological and social aspects to find sustainable solutions. The project Diversity of Insects in Nature protected Areas (DINA) assesses insect communities in 21 nature reserves in Germany, and considers interactions with plant diversity, pesticide exposure, spatial and climatic factors. The nature reserves border on agricultural land, to investigate impacts on insect diversity. Part of the project is to obtain scientific data from Malaise traps and their surroundings, while another part involves relevant stakeholders to identify opportunities and obstacles to insect diversity conservation. Our results indicate a positive association between insect richness and biomass. Insect richness was negatively related to the number of stationary pesticides (soil and vegetation), pesticides measured in ethanol, the amount of area in agricultural production, and precipitation. Our qualitative survey along with stakeholder interviews show that there is general support for insect conservation, while at the same time the stakeholders expressed the need for more information and data on insect biodiversity, as well as flexible policy options. We conclude that conservation management for insects in protected areas should consider a wider landscape. Local targets of conservation management will have to integrate different stakeholder perspectives. Scientifically informed stakeholder dialogues can mediate conflicts of interests, knowledge, and values to develop mutual conservation scenarios.
Hydrogen‐Bonded Cholesteric Liquid Crystals—A Modular Approach Toward Responsive Photonic Materials

A supramolecular approach for photonic materials based on hydrogen-bonded cholesteric liquid crystals is presented. The modular toolbox of low-molecular-weight hydrogen-bond donors and acceptors provides a simple route toward liquid crystalline materials with tailor-made thermal and photonic properties. Initial studies reveal broad application potential of the liquid crystalline thin films for chemo- and thermosensing. The chemosensing performance is based on the interruption of the intermolecular forces between the donor and acceptor moieties by interference with halogen-bond donors. Future studies will expand the scope of analytes and sensing in aqueous media. In addition, the implementation of the reported materials in additive manufacturing and printed photonic devices is planned.
Due to expected positive impacts on business, the application of artificial intelligence has been widely increased. The decision-making procedures of those models are often complex and not easily understandable to the company’s stakeholders, i.e. the people having to follow up on recommendations or try to understand automated decisions of a system. This opaqueness and black-box nature might hinder adoption, as users struggle to make sense and trust the predictions of AI models. Recent research on eXplainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI) focused mainly on explaining the models to AI experts with the purpose of debugging and improving the performance of the models. In this article, we explore how such systems could be made explainable to the stakeholders. For doing so, we propose a new convolutional neural network (CNN)-based explainable predictive model for product backorder prediction in inventory management. Backorders are orders that customers place for products that are currently not in stock. The company now takes the risk to produce or acquire the backordered products while in the meantime, customers can cancel their orders if that takes too long, leaving the company with unsold items in their inventory. Hence, for their strategic inventory management, companies need to make decisions based on assumptions. Our argument is that these tasks can be improved by offering explanations for AI recommendations. Hence, our research investigates how such explanations could be provided, employing Shapley additive explanations to explain the overall models’ priority in decision-making. Besides that, we introduce locally interpretable surrogate models that can explain any individual prediction of a model. The experimental results demonstrate effectiveness in predicting backorders in terms of standard evaluation metrics and outperform known related works with AUC 0.9489. Our approach demonstrates how current limitations of predictive technologies can be addressed in the business domain.
Monitoring the content of dissolved ozone in purified water is often mandatory to ensure the appropriate levels of disinfection and sanitization. However, quantification bears challenges as colorimetric assays require laborious off-line analysis, while commercially available instruments for electrochemical process analysis are expensive and often lack the possibility for miniaturization and discretionary installation. In this study, potentiometric ionic polymer metal composite (IPMC) sensors for the determination of dissolved ozone in ultrapure water (UPW) systems are presented. Commercially available polymer electrolyte membranes are treated via an impregnation-reduction method to obtain nanostructured platinum layers. By applying 25 different synthesis conditions, layer thicknesses of 2.2 to 12.6 µm are obtained. Supporting radiographic analyses indicate that the platinum concentration of the impregnation solution has the highest influence on the obtained metal loading. The sensor response behavior is explained by a Langmuir pseudo-isotherm model and allows the quantification of dissolved ozone to trace levels of less than 10 µg L−1. Additional statistical evaluations show that the expected Pt loading and radiographic blackening levels can be predicted with high accuracy and significance (R2adj. > 0.90, p < 10−10) solely from given synthesis conditions.
Kompetenzen auf dem Gebiet der Datenbanken gehören zum Pflichtbereich der Informatik. Das Angebot an Lehrbüchern, Vorlesungsformaten und Tools lässt sich jedoch für Lehrende oft nur eingeschränkt in die eigene Lehre integrieren. In diesem Aufsatz schildern wir unsere Erfahrungen in der Nutzung (frei) verfügbarer und der Entwicklung eigener digitaler Inhalte für grundlegende Datenbankveranstaltungen. Die Präferenzen der Studierenden werden mittels Nutzungsanalysen und Befragungen ermittelt. Wir stellen die Anforderungen auf, wie die nicht selten aufwendig herzustellenden digitalen Materialien von Lehrenden in ihre Lehr- und Lernumgebungen integriert werden können. Als konstruktive Antwort auf diese Herausforderung wird das Konzept EILD zur Entwicklung von Inhalten für die Lehre im Fach Datenbanken vorgestellt. Die Inhalte sollen in vielfältigen Lernszenarien eingesetzt werden können und mit einer Creative Commons (CC) Lizenzierung als OER (open educational resources) frei zur Verfügung stehen.
Emotions are associated with the genesis of visually induced motion sickness in virtual reality

Visually induced motion sickness (VIMS) is a well-known side effect of virtual reality (VR) immersion, with symptoms including nausea, disorientation, and oculomotor discomfort. Previous studies have shown that pleasant music, odor, and taste can mitigate VIMS symptomatology, but the mechanism by which this occurs remains unclear. We predicted that positive emotions influence the VIMS-reducing effects. To investigate this, we conducted an experimental study with 68 subjects divided into two groups. The groups were exposed to either positive or neutral emotions before and during the VIMS-provoking stimulus. Otherwise, they performed exactly the same task of estimating the time-to-contact while confronted with a VIMS-provoking moving starfield stimulation. Emotions were induced by means of pre-tested videos and with International Affective Picture System (IAPS) images embedded in the starfield simulation. We monitored emotion induction before, during, and after the simulation, using the Self-Assessment Manikin (SAM) valence and arousal scales. VIMS was assessed before and after exposure using the Simulator Sickness Questionnaire (SSQ) and during simulation using the Fast Motion Sickness Scale (FMS) and FMS-D for dizziness symptoms. VIMS symptomatology did not differ between groups, but valence and arousal were correlated with perceived VIMS symptoms. For instance, reported positive valence prior to VR exposure was found to be related to milder VIMS symptoms and, conversely, experienced symptoms during simulation were negatively related to subjects’ valence. This study sheds light on the complex and potentially bidirectional relationship of VIMS and emotions and provides starting points for further research on the use of positive emotions to prevent VIMS.
Die Motive für die Einführung von Public Cloud Services liegen oft im Bereich der Kosteneinsparung und Qualitätsverbesserung. Vielfach werden bei der erstmaligen Einführung vermeidbare Fehler gemacht, die im Nachhinein den Erfolg des Vorhabens schmälern. Der Beitrag beschreibt ein aus Sicht der Beratungspraxis bewährtes Vorgehensmodell für die Einführung und Nutzung von Public Cloud Services unter besonderer Berücksichtigung von Microsoft Cloud Services.
We analyze short-term effects of free hospitalization insurance for the poorest quintile of the population in the province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. First, we exploit that eligibility is based on an exogenous poverty score threshold and apply a regression discontinuity design. Second, we exploit imperfect rollout and compare insured and uninsured households using propensity score matching. With both methods we fail to detect significant effects on the incidence of hospitalization. Whereas the program did not meaningfully increase the quantity of health care consumed, insured households more often choose private hospitals, indicating a shift towards higher perceived quality of care.
Die Bundesrepublik Deutschland erlebt in jüngster Vergangenheit verstärkt Dieselfahrverbote in Großstädten. Gleichzeitig erfahren Großstädte als Lebensmittelpunkt eine steigende Beliebtheit. Für Verkehrsunternehmen gilt es, der Bevölkerung nachhaltige Mobilitätslösungen zu bieten, die ein Höchstmaß an Flexibilität ermöglichen. Moderne Mobility-as-a-Service-Konzepte und Innovationen in der Mobilität stellen den klassischen, planorientierten, öffentlichen Personennahverkehr und damit auch die Existenz von Bushaltestellen infrage. Mittels qualitativer Experten-Interviews lässt sich feststellen, dass sich die Bushaltestelle in den Innenstädten vor dem Hintergrund zunehmender digitaler Vernetzung von Mobilitätsanbietern und daraus resultierender modernen Mobility-as-a-service-Konzepte verändern wird. Die Ergebnisse deuten darauf hin, dass die Bushaltestelle in den Innenstädten auch in Zukunft bestehen bleibt und um „on demand“-Verkehre ergänzt wird. Ein radikaler Wandel, wie eine flächendeckende Einführung von autonom fahrenden Bussen, könnte langfristig eine Runderneuerung der Haltestelle zur Folge haben.
Fabry disease (FD) is an X‐linked lysosomal storage disorder. Deficiency of the lysosomal enzyme alpha‐galactosidase (GLA) leads to accumulation of potentially toxic globotriaosylceramide (Gb3) on a multisystem level. Cardiac and cerebrovascular abnormalities as well as progressive renal failure are severe, life‐threatening long‐term complications. The complete pathophysiology of chronic kidney disease (CKD) in FD and the role of tubular involvement for its progression are unclear.
We established human renal tubular epithelial cell lines from the urine of male FD patients and male controls. The renal tubular system is rich in mitochondria and involved in transport processes at high energy costs. Our studies revealed fragmented mitochondria with disrupted cristae structure in FD patient cells. Oxidative stress levels were elevated and oxidative phosphorylation was up‐regulated in FD pointing at enhanced energetic needs. Mitochondrial homeostasis and energy metabolism revealed major changes as evidenced by differences in mitochondrial number, energy production and fuel consumption. The changes were accompanied by activation of the autophagy machinery in FD. Sirtuin1, an important sensor of (renal) metabolic stress and modifier of different defense pathways, was highly expressed in FD.
Our data show that lysosomal FD impairs mitochondrial function and results in severe disturbance of mitochondrial energy metabolism in renal cells. This insight on a tissue‐specific level points to new therapeutic targets which might enhance treatment efficacy.

Die Fähigkeit zur Bewältigung und Auswertung dieser Daten schlägt sich in der Rolle des Data Scientist nieder, welcher aktuell einer der gefragtesten Berufe ist. Allerdings ist die Integration von Daten in Unternehmensstrategie und -kultur eine große Herausforderung. So müssen komplexe Daten und Analyseergebnisse auch nicht datenaffinen Stakeholdern kommuniziert werden. Hier kommt dem Data Storytelling eine entscheidende Rolle zu, denn um mit Daten eine Veränderung hervorrufen zu können, müssen vorerst Verständnis und Motivation für den Sachverhalt zielgruppenspezifisch geschaffen werden. Allerdings handelt es sich bei Data Storytelling noch um ein Nischenthema. Diese Arbeit leitet mithilfe einer systematischen Literaturanalyse die Erfolgsfaktoren von Data Storytelling für eine effektive und effiziente Kommunikation von Daten her, um Data Scientists in Forschung und Praxis bei der Kommunikation der Daten und Ergebnisse zu unterstützen.
Novel methods for contingency analysis of gas transport networks are presented. They are motivated by the transition of our energy system where hydrogen plays a growing role. The novel methods are based on a specific method for topological reduction and so-called supernodes. Stationary Euler equations with advanced compressor thermodynamics and a gas law allowing for gas compositions with up to 100% hydrogen are used. Several measures and plots support an intuitive comparison and analysis of the results. In particular, it is shown that the newly developed methods can estimate locations and magnitudes of additional capacities (injection, buffering, storage etc.) with a reasonable performance for networks of relevant composition and size.
The identification of energetic materials in containments is an important challenge for analytical methods in the field of safety and security. Opening a package without knowledge of its contents and the resulting hazards is highly involved with risks and should be avoided whenever possible. Therefore, preferable methods work non-destructive with minimal interaction and are capable of identifying target substances in a containment quickly and reliably. Most spectroscopic methods find their limits, if the target substance is shielded by a covering material. To solve this problem, a combined laser drilling method with subsequent identification of the target substance by means of Raman spectroscopic measurements through microscopic bore holes of the covering material is presented. A pulsed laser beam is used for both the drilling process and as an excitation source for Raman measurements in the same optical setup. Results show the ability of this new method to gain high-quality spectra even when performed through microscopic small bore channels. With the laser parameters chosen right, the method can even be performed on highly sensitive explosives like triacetone triperoxide (TATP). Another advantageous effect arises in an observed reduction in unwanted fluorescence signal in the spectral data, resulting from the confocal-like measurement setup with the bore hole acting as aperture.
Rosenbrock–Wanner methods for systems of stiff ordinary differential equations are well known since the seventies. They have been continuously developed and are efficient for differential-algebraic equations of index-1, as well. Their disadvantage that the Jacobian matrix has to be updated in every time step becomes more and more obsolete when automatic differentiation is used. Especially the family of Rodas methods has proven to be a standard in the Julia package DifferentialEquations. However, the fifth-order Rodas5 method undergoes order reduction for certain problem classes. Therefore, the goal of this paper is to compute a new set of coefficients for Rodas5 such that this order reduction is reduced. The procedure is similar to the derivation of the methods Rodas4P and Rodas4P2. In addition, it is possible to provide new dense output formulas for Rodas5 and the new method Rodas5P. Numerical tests show that for higher accuracy requirements Rodas5P always belongs to the best methods within the Rodas family.
Composite nanoparticles (NPs) consisting of lignin and different polysaccharide (PS) derivatives were prepared. In this synergistic approach, the PS derivative acts as biocompatible matrix that forms spherical NPs while lignin is a functional compound with therapeutic potential (e.g., antioxidative, antimicrobial, antiviral). Organosolv lignin and three different PS derivatives (cellulose acetate/CA, cellulose acetate phthalate/CAPh, xylan phenyl carbonate/XPC) were used in this study. Nanocomposites with particle sizes in the range of about 200–550 nm containing both types of biopolymers are accessible by dialysis of organic PS/lignin solutions against water. In particular, XPC and CAPh, which both contain aromatic substituents, were found to be suitable for incorporation of lignin within the PS nanomatrix. The present work paves the way for future studies in which the pharmaceutical potential and biocompatibility of composite NPs of lignin and PS derivatives with tailored properties are investigated.
In der heutigen Zeit nimmt die Bedeutung schlanker und effektiver Prozesse in Unternehmen vor dem Hintergrund des Wettbewerbs sowie Kostendrucks stetig zu. Um dieser Herausforderung entgegenzuwirken, fokussieren sich Unternehmen auf die Identifikation neuer innovativer Potenziale. Aufgrund der Tatsache, dass monotone und regelbasierte Prozesse durch Softwareroboter automatisiert werden können, ist das Interesse an Robotic Process Automation (RPA) in den letzten Jahren stetig gestiegen. Bevor sich Unternehmen allerdings für oder gegen den Einsatz von RPA entscheiden, ist es zunächst notwendig, dass die Entscheidungsträger ein Verständnis von RPA erlangen sowie die entsprechenden Einsatzpotenziale und Risiken einschätzen können. Dieser Artikel trägt diesem Bedürfnis Rechnung, indem es diese auf Basis einer Literaturrecherche ermittelt und bewertet. Im Ausblick wird das zukünftige Potenzial von RPA eingeschätzt.
In March 2020, the world was hit by the coronavirus disease (COVID‐19) pandemic which led to all‐embracing measures to contain its spread. Most employees were forced to work from home and take care of their children because schools and daycares were closed. We present data from a research project in a large multinational organisation in the Netherlands with monthly quantitative measurements from January to May 2020 (N = 253–516), enriched with qualitative data from participants' comments before and after telework had started. Growth curve modelling showed major changes in employees' work‐related well‐being reflected in decreasing work engagement and increasing job satisfaction. For work‐non‐work balance, workload and autonomy, cubic trends over time were found, reflecting initial declines during crisis onset (March/April) and recovery in May. Participants' additional remarks exemplify that employees struggled with fulfilling different roles simultaneously, developing new routines and managing boundaries between life domains. Moderation analyses demonstrated that demographic variables shaped time trends. The diverging trends in well‐being indicators raise intriguing questions and show that close monitoring and fine‐grained analyses are needed to arrive at a better understanding of the impact of the crisis across time and among different groups of employees.
Are There Extended Cognitive Improvements from Different Kinds of Acute Bouts of Physical Activity?

Acute bouts of physical activity of at least moderate intensity have shown to enhance cognition in young as well as older adults. This effect has been observed for different kinds of activities such as aerobic or strength and coordination training. However, only few studies have directly compared these activities regarding their effectiveness. Further, most previous studies have mainly focused on inhibition and have not examined other important core executive functions (i.e., updating, switching) which are essential for our behavior in daily life (e.g., staying focused, resisting temptations, thinking before acting), as well. Therefore, this study aimed to directly compare two kinds of activities, aerobic and coordinative, and examine how they might affect executive functions (i.e., inhibition, updating, and switching) in a test-retest protocol. It is interesting for practical implications, as coordinative exercises, for example, require little space and would be preferable in settings such as an office or a classroom. Furthermore, we designed our experiment in such a way that learning effects were controlled. Then, we tested the influence of acute bouts of physical activity on the executive functioning in both young and older adults (young 16–22 years, old 65–80 years). Overall, we found no differences between aerobic and coordinative activities and, in fact, benefits from physical activities occurred only in the updating tasks in young adults. Additionally, we also showed some learning effects that might influence the results. Thus, it is important to control cognitive tests for learning effects in test-retest studies as well as to analyze effects from physical activity on a construct level of executive functions.

Während im IT-Projektmanagement agile Methoden seit vielen Jahren in der Praxis Zuspruch finden, werden im IT-Controlling überwiegend noch klassische Methoden eingesetzt. Der Beitrag untersucht die Fragestellung, ob und wie die im IT-Controlling eingesetzten Methoden auch agilen Paradigmen folgen und Methoden des agilen IT-Projektmanagements adaptiert werden können.
Jet engines of airplanes are designed such that in some components damage occurs and accumulates in service without being critical up to a certain level of damage. Since maintenance, repair, and component exchange are very cost-intensive, it is necessary to predict efficiently the component lifetime with high accuracy. A former developed lifetime model, based on interpolated results of aerodynamic and structural mechanics simulations, uses material parameters estimated from literature values of standard creep experiments. For improved accuracy, an experimental procedure is developed for the characterization of the short-time creep behavior, which is relevant for the operation of turbine blades of jet engines. To consider microstructural influences resulting from the manufacturing of thin-walled single crystal turbine blades, small-scale specimens from used turbine blades are extracted and tested in short- and medium-time creep experiments. Based on experimental results and literature values, a creep model, which describes the fracture behavior for a wide range of creep loads, is calibrated and is now used for the lifetime prediction of turbine blades under real loading conditions.
3-Hydroxyisobutyrate Dehydrogenase (HIBADH) deficiency - a novel disorder of valine metabolism

3-Hydroxyisobutyric acid (3HiB) is an intermediate in the degradation of the branched-chain amino acid valine. Disorders in valine degradation can lead to 3HiB accumulation and its excretion in the urine. This article describes the first two patients with a new metabolic disorder, 3-hydroxyisobutyrate dehydrogenase (HIBADH) deficiency, its phenotype and its treatment with a low-valine diet. The detected mutation in the HIBADH gene leads to nonsense-mediated mRNA decay of the mutant allele and to a complete loss-of-function of the enzyme. Under strict adherence to a low-valine diet a rapid decrease of 3HiB excretion in the urine was observed. Due to limited patient numbers and intrafamilial differences in phenotype with one affected and one unaffected individual, the clinical phenotype of HIBADH deficiency needs further evaluation.
