(2004)
The Bonn region had to undergo a serious structural change because of the loss of its function as the capital of Germany. In this empirical study the role of the two newly founded universities for applied sciences Bonn-Rhein-Sieg and RheinAhrCampus in the process of regional structural change is examined. What was and still is their contribution to innovative regional development? The special focus of this study is on the number of students and graduates, the transfer of knowledge and technology and the spin-offs and start-ups.
An analysis of sharing string objects with the Java Virtual Machine was conducted; they are the most used objects in Java programs and they are immutable - thus they are read-only and easily identified. While the results are promising, it is clear that sharing more objects would result in better performance. Automatic object selection for sharing is non-trivial, because in the current state only read-only objects can be shared. This attribute can not be easily determined during runtime by an algorithm; the developer on the other hand can. This thesis presents the development of an Application Programmer Interface (API) that allows programmers to use the Java Virtual Machine (JVM) internal sharing functionality. Furthermore, we present the usage of the sharing API. Open-source software was used as real-world test cases. Afterwards the evaluation shows that the ratio between memory savings and start-up time overhead is reasonable.
Neural networks in a multilayer perceptron architecture are able to classify data and approximate functions based on a set of sample data (curve fitting). These properties are used to investigate experimentally the applicability of neural networks for cost estimation in early phases of product design. Experiments are based on pilot cost data from a manufacturing company. In addition, artificially created simulative data are used for benchmarking. The cost estimation performance is compared to conventional methods, i.e. linear and non-linear parametric regression. Neural networks achieve lower deviations in their cost estimations. Beyond the use of standard neural architectures, simple modifications for a performance improvement are suggested and tested. Finally, a profile for situations where neural networks are appropriate is derived from the results.

(1997)
Software offshoring has been established as an important business strategy over the last decade. While research on such forms of Global Software Development (GSD) has mainly focused on the situation of large enterprises, small enterprises are increasingly engaging in offshoring, too. Representing the biggest share of the German software industry, small companies are known to be important innovators and market pioneers. They often regard their flexibility and customer-orientation as core competitive advantages. Unlike large corporations, their small size allows them to adopt software development approaches that are characterized by a high agility and flat hierarchies. At the same time, their distinct strategies make it unlikely that they can simply adopt management strategies that were developed for larger companies.
Flexible development approaches like the ones preferred by small corporations have proven to be problematic in the context of offshoring, as their strong dependency on constant communication is strongly affected by the various barriers of international cooperation between companies. Cooperating closely over companies’ borders in different time zones and in culturally diverse teams poses complex obstacles for flexible management approaches. It is still a matter of discussion in fields like Software Engineering and Computer Supported Cooperative Work how these obstacles can be tackled and how they affect companies in the long term. Hence, it is agreed that we need a more detailed understanding of distributed software development practices in order to come to feasible technological and organizational solutions.
This dissertation presents results from two ethnographically-informed case studies of software offshoring in small German enterprises. By adopting Anselm Strauss’ concept of articulation work, we want to deepen the understanding of managing distributed software development in flexible, customer-oriented organizations. In doing so, we show how practices of coordinating inter-organizational software development are closely related to aspects of organizational learning in small enterprises. By means of interviews with developers and project managers from both parties of the cooperation, we do not only take into account the multiple perspectives of the cooperation, but also include the socio-cultural background of international software development projects into our analysis.
Trust and Social Capital: Revisiting an Offshoring Failure Story of a Small German Software Company
(2009)
This paper describes the development of a Pedelec controller whose performance level (PL) conforms to European standard on safety of machinery [9] and whose soft- ware is verified to conform to EPAC standard [6] by means of a software verification technique called model checking. In compliance with the standard [9] the hardware needs to implement the required properties corresponding to categories “C” and “D”. The latter is used if the breaks are not able to bring the velomobile with a broken motor controller to a full stop. Therefore the controller needs to implement a test unit, which verifies the functionality of the components and, in case of an emergency, shuts the whole hardware down to prevent injuries of the cyclist. The MTTFd can be measured through a failure graph, which is the result of a FMEA analysis, and can be used to proof that the Pedelec controller meets the regulations of the system specification. The analysis of the system in compliance with [9] usually treats the software as a black box thus ignoring its inner workings and validating its correctness by means of testing. In this paper we present a temporal logic specification according to [6], based on which the software for the Pedelec controller is implemented, and verify instead of only testing its functionality. By means of model checking [1] we proof that the software fulfills all requirements which are regulated by its specification.
