Das Cutting sticks-Problem ist in seiner allgemeinen Formulierung ein NP-vollständiges Problem mit Anwendungspotenzialen im Bereich der Logistik. Unter der Annahme, dass P ungleich NP (P != NP) ist, existieren keine effizienten, d.h. polynomiellen Algorithmen zur Lösung des allgemeinen Problems.
In diesem Papier werden Ansätze aufgezeigt, mit denen bestimmte Instanzen des Problems effizient berechnet werden können. Für die Berechnung wichtige Parameter werden charakterisiert und deren Beziehung untereinander analysiert.
This paper describes the security mechanisms of several wireless building automation technologies, namely ZigBee, EnOcean, ZWave, KNX, FS20, and Home-Matic. It is shown that none of the technologies provides the necessary measure ofsecurity that should be expected in building automation systems. One of the conclusions drawn is that software embedded in systems that are build for a lifetime of twenty years or more needs to be updatable.

Die große Nachfrage bei Behörden, Hundeführern, Wissenschaft und Justiz zeigt auf, wie wichtig dieser Wissensaustausch auch weiterhin sein wird.
Die Welt der Hundenase und die Faszination, die die Zusammenarbeit mit dem „Besten Freund des Menschen“ mit sich bringt, eröffnet uns immer weitere Einsatzmöglichkeiten dieser Spürnase. Erfahrungsberichte, Fallbeispiele und Erkenntnisse aus Kynologie und Wissenschaft haben die Veranstaltung erneut zu einem Diskussionsforum gestaltet. Neue Projekte und interdisziplinäre Zusammenarbeit sind ins Leben gerufen worden und machen Neugierig auf zukünftige Veranstaltungen.
Im Rahmen eines Forschungsaufenthaltes an der Universidad de Buenos Aires (UBA) wurde in Kooperation mit der Fakultät für Veterinärwissenschaften und dem Zentrum für Interdisziplinäre Wasserforschung (CETA) eine Befragung unter Studierenden und Mitarbeitenden (wissenschaftlichen und Verwaltungsmitarbeitern sowie Professoren) durchgeführt. Diese Befragung befasste sich inhaltlich mit Themen zur Einstellung argentinischer Konsumenten zu nachhaltigen und biologischen Lebensmitteln. Dabei spielte ebenfalls die Wahrnehmung dieser Lebensmittel anhand von Siegeln eine Rolle. Ferner wurden auch Fragen zum Bewusstsein für zertifizierte Produkte gestellt, das ein Präjudiz für ein spezifisches Einkaufsverhalten ist.
Current robot platforms are being employed to collaborate with humans in a wide range of domestic and industrial tasks. These environments require autonomous systems that are able to classify and communicate anomalous situations such as fires, injured persons, car accidents; or generally, any potentially dangerous situation for humans. In this paper we introduce an anomaly detection dataset for the purpose of robot applications as well as the design and implementation of a deep learning architecture that classifies and describes dangerous situations using only a single image as input. We report a classification accuracy of 97 % and METEOR score of 16.2. We will make the dataset publicly available after this paper is accepted.
In this paper we propose an implement a general convolutional neural network (CNN) building framework for designing real-time CNNs. We validate our models by creating a real-time vision system which accomplishes the tasks of face detection, gender classification and emotion classification simultaneously in one blended step using our proposed CNN architecture. After presenting the details of the training procedure setup we proceed to evaluate on standard benchmark sets. We report accuracies of 96% in the IMDB gender dataset and 66% in the FER-2013 emotion dataset. Along with this we also introduced the very recent real-time enabled guided back-propagation visualization technique. Guided back-propagation uncovers the dynamics of the weight changes and evaluates the learned features. We argue that the careful implementation of modern CNN architectures, the use of the current regularization methods and the visualization of previously hidden features are necessary in order to reduce the gap between slow performances and real-time architectures. Our system has been validated by its deployment on a Care-O-bot 3 robot used during RoboCup@Home competitions. All our code, demos and pre-trained architectures have been released under an open-source license in our public repository.
Die Hochschulen der "Hochschulallianz für den Mittelstand" haben sich ganz bewusst für diese Namensgebung entschieden. Wir wollen uns gemeinsam für den Mittelstand in Deutschland engagieren. Hochschulen für angewandte Wissenschaften/Fachhochschulen sind in vielen Regionen der wichtigste Ausbildungs-, Forschungs- und Entwicklungspartner für mittelständische Unternehmen. Und dennoch konstatiert der aktuelle Innovationsindikator des BDI: Es gibt noch immer zu viele Berührungsängste zwischen Wissenschaftlern und KMU-Managern. Daran hat sich seit Jahrzehnten leider nicht viel geändert.

Recent work in image captioning and scene-segmentation has shown significant results in the context of scene-understanding. However, most of these developments have not been extrapolated to research areas such as robotics. In this work we review the current state-ofthe- art models, datasets and metrics in image captioning and scenesegmentation. We introduce an anomaly detection dataset for the purpose of robotic applications, and we present a deep learning architecture that describes and classifies anomalous situations. We report a METEOR score of 16.2 and a classification accuracy of 97 %.
Neuroevolution methods evolve the weights of a neural network, and in some cases the topology, but little work has been done to analyze the effect of evolving the activation functions of individual nodes on network size, an important factor when training networks with a small number of samples. In this work we extend the neuroevolution algorithm NEAT to evolve the activation function of neurons in addition to the topology and weights of the network. The size and performance of networks produced using NEAT with uniform activation in all nodes, or homogenous networks, is compared to networks which contain a mixture of activation functions, or heterogenous networks. For a number of regression and classification benchmarks it is shown that, (1) qualitatively different activation functions lead to different results in homogeneous networks, (2) the heterogeneous version of NEAT is able to select well performing activation functions, (3) the produced heterogeneous networks are significantly smaller than homogeneous networks.
Smart home systems change the way we experience the home. While there are established research fields within HCI for visualizing specific use cases of a smart home, studies targeting user demands on visualizations spanning across multiple use cases are rare. Especially, individual data-related demands pose a challenge for usable visualizations. To investigate potentials of an end-user development (EUD) approach for flexibly supporting such demands, we developed a smart home system featuring both pre-defined visualizations and a visualization creation tool. To evaluate our concept, we installed our prototype in 12 households as part of a Living Lab study. Results are based on three interview studies, a design workshop and system log data. We identified eight overarching interests in home data and show how participants used pre-defined visualizations to get an overview and the creation tool to not only address specific use cases but also to answer questions by creating temporary visualizations.

Food losses occur for many reasons at all stages of supply chains for fruits, vegetables and potatoes. They cause immense economic, environmental and social costs – not only in developing countries but also in developed countries. According to the European Commission, about 90 million tonnes of food are wasted annually in Europe alone. However, particularly for the early stages of supply chains for fruits, vegetables and potatoes there is still a lack of reliable data. Thus, one objective of this study is to contribute to the quantification of food losses between field and retail, where the main focus is set on potatoes, apples, carrots, strawberries and asparagus. Furthermore, neither reasons why products are removed from the supply chains nor their alternative uses are fully examined yet. This is why, the study takes a look on those issues, too. Results are based on data from an online survey among producers of fruits, vegetables and potatoes in North-Rhine Westphalia, Germany and on interviews with producers and other supply chain experts. Findings suggest that the products’ size and form, their storage capabilities and food safety issues have big impacts on food losses. Despite a small sample size, these findings are in line with recent studies.
Telecollaborating and communicating in online contexts using English as a Lingua Franca (ELF) requires students to develop multiple literacies in addition to foreign language skills and intercultural communicative competence. This chapter looks at the intersection of technology and teaching ELF, examining mutual contributions of technologies, more specifically Web 2.0, and ELF to each other, and the challenges in designing and implementing collaboration projects across cultures. Moreover, it looks at how the development of digital competencies in ELF (DELF) can be enhanced through the implementation of Web 2.0 mediated intercultural dialogues. The detail of the research design including internet tools used, participants and tasks are also discussed. Data analysis points to a positive attitude towards telecollaboration, also providing confirmation of some of the problems identified in theoretical framework, such as different levels of personal engagement.

Nahezu jede Einleitung allgemeinverständlicher Publikationen zur Herzratenvariabilität beginnt mit dem Wang Shu-He zugeschriebenen Zitat: "Wenn das Herz so regelmäßig wie das Klopfen eines Spechtes oder das Tröpfeln des Regens auf dem Dach wird, wird der Patient innerhalb von 4 Tagen sterben". Trotz der häufigen Verwendung dieses Zitats sind keine vergleichenden Analysen von Herzratenvariabilität, Spechttrommlern und Regentropfen verfügbar. Dies war Anlass zu den hier vorgestellten Messungen und dem Versuch, die gewonnenen Registrierungen durch geeignete Aufbereitung mit dem menschlichen Herzschlag vergleichen und zum Zitat ins Verhältnis setzen zu können.
Ressourceneffiziente Optimierung von Hohlkörpern aus Kunststoff mittels Multiskalensimulation

In dieser Arbeit werden neuartige methodische Erweiterungen der Lattice-Boltzmann-Methode (LBM) entwickelt, die effizientere Simulationen inkompressibler Wirbelströmungen ermöglichen. Diese Erweiterungen beheben zwei Hauptprobleme der Standard-LBM: ihre Instabilität in unteraufgelösten turbulenten Simulationen und ihre Beschränkung auf reguläre Rechengitter. Dazu wird zunächst eine Pseudo-Entropische Stabilisierung (PES) entwickelt. Diese kombiniert Ansätze der Multiple-Relaxation-Time (MRT)-Modelle und der Entropischen LBM zu einem expliziten, lokalen und flexiblen Stabilisierungsoperator. Diese Modifikation des Kollisionsschritts erlaubt selbst auf stark unteraufgelösten Gittern stabile und qualitativ korrekte Simulationen. Zur Erweiterung der LBM auf irreguläre Rechengitter wird zunächst eine moderne Discontinuous-Galerkin-LBM untersucht und um stabilere Zeitintegratoren ergänzt. Diese Studie demonstriert die drastischen Schwächen existierender LBMAnsätze auf irregulären Gittern. Basierend auf den gewonnenen Erkenntnissen gelingt die Formulierung einer neuartigen Semi-Lagrangeschen LBM (SLLBM). Diese ermöglicht in einzigartigerWeise sowohl die Verwendung irregulärer Gitter und großer Zeitschritte als auch eine hohe räumliche Konvergenzordnung. Anhand von Beispielsimulationen wird demonstriert, wieso dieser Ansatz anderen aktuellen Off-Lattice-Boltzmann-Methoden (OLBMs) in Effizienz und Genauigkeit überlegen ist. Weitere neuartige Aspekte dieser Arbeit sind die Entwicklung eines modularen Off-Lattice-Boltzmann-Codes und die Erweiterung der LBM um implizite Mehrschrittverfahren, mit denen eine Erhöhung der zeitlichen Konvergenzordnung gelingt.

The results are implementations that heavily mix algorithmic aspects with hardware and implementation details, making the code non-portable and difficult to change and maintain.
In this paper, we present a new approach that offers the ability to define in a functional language a set of conceptual, high-level language abstractions that are optimized away by a special compiler in order to maximize performance. Using this abstraction mechanism we separate a generic ray traversal and intersection algorithm from its low-level aspects that are specific to the target hardware. We demonstrate that our code is not only significantly more flexible, simpler to write, and more concise but also that the compiled results perform as well as state-of-the-art implementations on any of the tested CPU and GPU platforms.
As robots are becoming ubiquitous and more capable, the need for introducing solid robot software development methods is pressing to increase robots' task spectrum. This thesis is concerned with improving software engineering of robot perception systems. The presented research employs a model-based approach to provide the means to represent knowledge about robotics software. The thesis is divided into three parts, namely research on the specification, deployment and adaptation of robot perception systems.

Neben der Verbesserung des Gesundheitszustandes sind der Erhalt der Beschäftigungsfähigkeit und die berufliche (Wieder-)Eingliederung zentrale Ziele der Rehabilitationsleistungen der Deutschen Rentenversicherung. In der „Reha-QM-Outcome-Studie“ wurden sowohl mittels Patientenfragebogen Angaben zum subjektiven Nutzen der Behandlung als auch mittels Routinedaten der Rentenversicherung Angaben zum Erwerbsstatus bzw. zur Berentung erhoben, so dass eine Gegenüberstellung beider Zieldimensionen erfolgen kann.

RoCKIn@Work was focused on benchmarks in the domain of industrial robots. Both task and functionality benchmarks were derived from real world applications. All of them were part of a bigger user story painting the picture of a scaled down real world factory scenario. Elements used to build the testbed were chosen from common materials in modern manufacturing environments. Networked devices, machines controllable through a central software component, were also part of the testbed and introduced a dynamic component to the task benchmarks. Strict guidelines on data logging were imposed on participating teams to ensure gathered data could be automatically evaluated. This also had the positive effect that teams were made aware of the importance of data logging, not only during a competition but also during research as useful utility in their own laboratory. Tasks and functionality benchmarks are explained in detail, starting with their use case in industry, further detailing their execution and providing information on scoring and ranking mechanisms for the specific benchmark.
In diesem Artikel wird darüber berichtet, ob die Glaubwürdigkeit von Avataren als mögliches Modulationskriterium für die virtuelle Expositionstherapie von Agoraphobie in Frage kommt. Dafür werden mehrere Glaubwürdigkeitsstufen für Avatare, die hypothetisch einen Einfluss auf die virtuelle Expositionstherapie von Agoraphobie haben könnten sowie ein potentielles Expositionsszenario entwickelt. Die Arbeit kann innerhalb einer Studie einen signifikanten Einfluss der Glaubwürdigkeitsstufen auf Präsenz, Kopräsenz und Realismus aufzeigen.
In order to help journalists investigate inside large audiovisual archives, as maintained by news broadcast agencies, the multimedia data must be indexed by text-based search engies. By automatically creating a transcript through automatic speech recognition (ASR), the spoken word becomes accessible to text search, and queries for keywords are made possible. But stil, important contextual information like the identity of the speaker is not captured. Especially when gathering original footage in the political domain, the identity of the speaker can be the most important query constraint, although this name may not be prominent in the words spoken. It is thus desireable to have this information provided explicitely to the search engine. To provide this information, the archive must be an alyzed by automatic Speaker Identification (SID). While this research topic has seen substantial gains in accuracy and robustness over last years, it has not yet established itself as a helpful, large-scale tool outside the research community. This thesis sets out to establish a workflow to provide automatic speaker identification. Its application is to help journalists searching on speeches given in the German parliament (Bundestag). This is a contribution to the News-Stream 3.0 project, a BMBF funded research project that addresses accessibility of various data sources for journalists.
Culture is at the core of any social, economic and business interactions and relationships. The way people perceive the culture of others influences their decision to collaborate socially, politically and economically with them. It is therefore, imperative students appreciate the dynamics of cross-cultural interactions and collaborations, since it exposes them to a wider view of the world. In doing this, it is important they (students) are allowed to explore as much as possible with little interference by their teachers. Using the project students went through real-life experience in a self-directed enquiry. In the process, they were taught to solve problems encountered during the learning process. The focus of the intercultural communication project was to understand how people from different cultures speak, interact and perceive others’ culture. It was found students innovate if allowed to explore a certain phenomenon on their own. Furthermore, face-to-face meetings can be arranged between people in the different countries can be arranged using these Web 2.0 tools. Based on the experience from the project, it was observed that the success of a collaborative international project depends on the understanding of the crosscultural dynamics of partners. For such collaborations, it is imperative to establish personal relationships, be flexible and adaptable to situations and change as well as being swift resolving potential conflict situation.
Populating virtual worlds with intelligent agents can drastically improve a user's sense of presence. Applying these worlds to virtual training, simulations, or (serious) games, often requires multiple agents to be simulated in real time. The process of generating believable agent behavior starts with providing a plausible perception and attention process that is both efficient and controllable. We describe a conceptual framework for synthetic perception that specifically considers the mentioned requirements: plausibility, real-time performance, and controllability. A sample implementation will focus on sensing, attention, and memory to demonstrate the framework's capabilities in a real-time game engine scenario. A combination of dynamic geometric sensing and false coloring with static saliency information is provided to exemplify the collection of environmental stimuli. The subsequent attention process handles both bottom-up processing and task-oriented, top-down factors. Behavioral results can be influenced by controlling memory and attention The example case is demonstrated and discussed alongside future extensions.

Die mechanischen Eigenschaften von extrusionsblasgeformten Kunststoffhohlkörpern hängen wesentlich von den vom Verarbeitungsprozess beeinflussten Materialeigenschaften ab. Ziel der dargestellten Untersuchung ist, prozessabhängige Materialkennwerte in Simulationsprogrammen zu berücksichtigen und damit deren Vorhersagegenauigkeit zu erhöhen. Hierzu ist die Schaffung einer Schnittstelle zwischen Prozess- und Bauteilsimulation notwendig. Darüber hinaus wird vorgestellt, wie Simulationen auf Mikroebene (molekulardynamische Simulationen) genutzt werden können, um Materialkennwerte ohne die Durchführung eines Realexperiments zu ermitteln.
Funktionseinschränkungen nach erworbener Hirnschädigung können die Mobilität der Betroffenen beeinträchtigen und zu gravierenden Änderungen des Lebensstils bis hin zur Inaktivität führen. Es ist davon auszugehen, dass ein inaktiver Lebensstil den Gesundheitszustand weiter verschlechtert und sich für die Betroffenen daraus ein erhöhtes Risiko für weitere chronische Erkrankungen ergibt. Bisherige Studienergebnisse beschreiben weder das Aktivitätsverhalten von Menschen mit erworbener Hirnschädigung noch wurden geeignete Interventionen zur nachhaltigen Steigerung der körperlichen Aktivität (KA) entwickelt. Ziel der vorliegenden Arbeit war es ein umfassendes Abbild des Aktivitätsverhaltens im Alltag von Menschen mit erworbener Hirnschädigung zu erstellen sowie die Machbarkeit und die Auswirkungen einer Bewegungsintervention auf das Aktivitätsverhalten und die Lebensqualität zu untersuchen.
Multiple myeloma is the second most common hematological malignancy. Despite all the progress made in treating multiple myeloma, it still remains an incurable disease. Patients are left with a median survival of 4-5 years. The combined treatment of multiple myeloma with histone deacetylase inhibitors and cytokine-induced killer cells provides a promising targeted treatment option for patients. This study investigated the impact of a combined treatment compared to treatment with histone deacetylase inhibitors. The experiments revealed that a treatment with histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitors could reduce cell viability to 59% for KMS 18 cell line and 46% for the U-266 cell line. The combined treatment led to a decrease of cell viability to 33% for KMS 18 and 27% for the U-266 cell line, thus showing a significantly better efficacy than the single treatment.
Vor Gericht werden Einsätze geruchsdifferenzierender Hunde derzeit nur unter bestimmten Voraussetzungen als Indizien-Beweis zugelassen (dokumentierter, ausreichender Ausbildungsstand des Hundes, Bestätigung der Suche durch zweiten Hund). Oft sind Leistungsgrenzen der Hunde hinsichtlich Alter der Geruchsspur, Einfluss bestimmter Witterungsbedingungen (Temperatur, Feuchtigkeit, etc.) auf die Detektierbarkeit menschlicher Geruchsspuren unklar und umstritten. Auch ist bis heute nicht wissenschaftlich untersucht, welche Bestandteile und Einzelsubstanzen des humanen Geruchs für die Hunde tatsächlich wahrnehmbar und wichtig zur Personensuche und -identifikation sind. Daher widmet sich ein aktuelles Promotionsprojekt im Institut für Detektionstechnologien der Erforschung dieser Fragen.
In der Regel werden für die Hundeausbildung lose Explosivstoffe im Grammbereich eingesetzt. Deren Umgang unterliegt jedoch aufgrund des Gefährdungspotenzials und aus rechtlichen Gründen sehr strikten Regeln. Diese können nur mit Schwierigkeiten mit den Erfordernissen der Hundeausbildung in Einklang gebracht werden. Der Umgang mit hoch-brisanten Zündstoffen und Selbstlaboraten (z.B. TATP und HMTD) stellt aufgrund der nochmals erhöhten Gefährlichkeit und zusätzlicher gesetzlicher Regelungen eine spezielle Herausforderung dar. Das Poster beschreibt die EMPK® (Echtstoff-Mikromengen-Prüfkörper), die eine sichere Alternative als Trainingshilfsmittel für Sprengstoffspürhunde darstellen.
The MAP-Elites algorithm produces a set of high-performing solutions that vary according to features defined by the user. This technique has the potential to be a powerful tool for design space exploration, but is limited by the need for numerous evaluations. The Surrogate-Assisted Illumination algorithm (SAIL), introduced here, integrates approximative models and intelligent sampling of the objective function to minimize the number of evaluations required by MAP-Elites.
The ability of SAIL to efficiently produce both accurate models and diverse high performing solutions is illustrated on a 2D airfoil design problem. The search space is divided into bins, each holding a design with a different combination of features. In each bin SAIL produces a better performing solution than MAP-Elites, and requires several orders of magnitude fewer evaluations. The CMA-ES algorithm was used to produce an optimal design in each bin: with the same number of evaluations required by CMA-ES to find a near-optimal solution in a single bin, SAIL finds solutions of similar quality in every bin.
A plethora of architectural patterns and elements for developing service-oriented applications can be gathered from the state-of-the-art. Most of these approaches are merely applicable for single-tenant applications. However, less methodical support is provided for scenarios, in which multiple different tenants with varying requirements access the same application stack concurrently. In order to fill this gap, both novel and existing architectural patterns, architectural elements, as well as fundamental design decisions must be considered and integrated into a framework that leverages the devel- opment of multi-tenant application. This paper addresses this demand and presents the SOAdapt framework. It promotes the development of adaptable multi-tenant applications based on a service-oriented architecture that is capable of incorporating specific requirements of new tenants in a flexible manner.

The combination of Software-Defined Networking (SDN) and Wireless Mesh Network (WMN) is challenging due to the different natures of both concepts. SDN describes networks with homogeneous, static and centralized controlled topologies. In contrast, a WMN is characterized by a dynamic and distributed network control, and adds new challenges with respect to time-critical operation. However, SDN and WMN are both associated with decreasing the operational costs for communication networks which is especially beneficial for internet provisioning in rural areas. This work surveys the current status for Software-Defined Wireless Mesh Networking. Besides a general overview in the domain of wireless SDN, this work focuses especially on different identified aspects: representing and controlling wireless interfaces, control-plane connection and topology discovery, modulation and coding, routing and load-balancing and client handling. A complete overview of surveyed solutions, open issues and new research directions is provided with regard to each aspect.
Argentina substantially contributes to the global organic agriculture and food sector due to its large areas of organically managed agricultural land. However, most of the organic production is foreseen for export. Overall, food supply for the domestic organic market is hardly tapped. This study investigates the current importance of organic agriculture and food production as well as its consumption within the country. The novelty of the study also lies in the observation, documentation and analysis of latest stakeholder-driven developments towards organic agriculture and food. The publication allows to make the Argentinian organic market significantly more visible for the international audience.
Die vorliegende Erfindung betrifft ein Analysesystem und ein bibliotheksunabhängiges Analyseverfahren zum qualitativen Nachweis und zur Klassifizierung energetischer Materialien, insbesondere zum Nachweis von Explosiv- und Sprengstoffen sowie für komplexe Stoffzusammensetzungen, welche in IEDS (Improvised Explosive Devices) Verwendung finden.
Reliable and regional differentiated power forecasts are required to guarantee an efficient and economic energy transition towards renewable energies. Amongst other renewable energy technologies, e.g. wind mills, photovoltaic (PV) systems are an essential component of this transition being cost-efficient and simply to install. Reliable power forecasts are however required for a grid integration of photovoltaic systems, which among other data requires high-resolution spatio-temporal global irradiance data.
Solar energy is one option to serve the rising global energy demand with low environmental impact. Building an energy system with a considerable share of solar power requires long-term investment and a careful investigation of potential sites. Therefore, understanding the impacts from varying regionally and locally determined meteorological conditions on solar energy production will influence energy yield projections.
A new method for design space exploration and optimization, Surrogate-Assisted Illumination (SAIL), is presented. Inspired by robotics techniques designed to produce diverse repertoires of behaviors for use in damage recovery, SAIL produces diverse designs that vary according to features specified by the designer. By producing high-performing designs with varied combinations of user-defined features a map of the design space is created. This map illuminates the relationship between the chosen features and performance, and can aid designers in identifying promising design concepts. SAIL is designed for use with compu-tationally expensive design problems, such as fluid or structural dynamics, and integrates approximative models and intelligent sampling of the objective function to minimize the number of function evaluations required. On a 2D airfoil optimization problem SAIL is shown to produce hundreds of diverse designs which perform competitively with those found by state-of-the-art black box optimization. Its capabilities are further illustrated in a more expensive 3D aerodynamic optimization task.
The MAP-Elites algorithm produces a set of high-performing solutions that vary according to features defined by the user. This technique to 'illuminate' the problem space through the lens of chosen features has the potential to be a powerful tool for exploring design spaces, but is limited by the need for numerous evaluations. The Surrogate-Assisted Illumination (SAIL) algorithm, introduced here, integrates approximative models and intelligent sampling of the objective function to minimize the number of evaluations required by MAP-Elites.
The ability of SAIL to efficiently produce both accurate models and diverse high-performing solutions is illustrated on a 2D airfoil design problem. The search space is divided into bins, each holding a design with a different combination of features. In each bin SAIL produces a better performing solution than MAP-Elites, and requires several orders of magnitude fewer evaluations. The CMA-ES algorithm was used to produce an optimal design in each bin: with the same number of evaluations required by CMA-ES to find a near-optimal solution in a single bin, SAIL finds solutions of similar quality in every bin.
