BACKGROUND
Metabolic control and dietary management of patients with phenylketonuria (PKU) are based on single blood samples obtained at variable intervals. Sampling conditions are often not well-specified and intermittent variation of phenylalanine concentrations between two measurements remains unknown. We determined phenylalanine and tyrosine concentrations in blood over 24 hours. Additionally, the impact of food intake and physical exercise on phenylalanine and tyrosine concentrations was examined. Subcutaneous microdialysis was evaluated as a tool for monitoring phenylalanine and tyrosine concentrations in PKU patients.
METHODS
Phenylalanine and tyrosine concentrations of eight adult patients with PKU were determined at 60 minute intervals in serum, dried blood and subcutaneous microdialysate and additionally every 30 minutes postprandially in subcutaneous microdialysate. During the study period of 24 hours individually tailored meals with defined phenylalanine and tyrosine contents were served at fixed times and 20 min bicycle-ergometry was performed.
RESULTS
Serum phenylalanine concentrations showed only minor variations while tyrosine concentrations varied significantly more over the 24-hour period. Food intake within the patients' individual diet had no consistent effect on the mean phenylalanine concentration but the tyrosine concentration increased up to 300% individually. Mean phenylalanine concentration remained stable after short-term bicycle-exercise whereas mean tyrosine concentration declined significantly. Phenylalanine and tyrosine concentrations in dried blood were significantly lower than serum concentrations. No close correlation has been found between serum and microdialysis fluid for phenylalanine and tyrosine concentrations.
CONCLUSIONS
Slight diurnal variation of phenylalanine concentrations in serum implicates that a single blood sample does reliably reflect the metabolic control in this group of adult patients. Phenylalanine concentrations determined by subcutaneous microdialysis do not correlate with the patients' phenylalanine concentrations in serum/blood.
Embodied artificial agents operating in dynamic, real-world environments need architectures that support the special requirements that exist for them. Architectures are not always designed from scratch and the system then implemented all at once, but rather, a step-wise integration of components is often made to increase functionality. Our work aims to increase flexibility and robustness by integrating a task planner into an existing architecture and coupling the planning process with the preexisting execution and the basic monitoring processes. This involved the conversion of monolithic SMACH scenario scripts (state-machine execution scripts) into modular states that can be called dynamically based on the plan that was generated by the planning process. The procedural knowledge encoded in such state machines was used to model the planning domain for two RoboCup@Home scenarios on a Care-O-Bot 3 robot [GRH+08]. This was done for the JSHOP2 [IN03] hierarchical task network (HTN) planner. A component which iterates through a generated plan and calls the appropriate SMACH states [Fie11] was implemented, thus enabling the scenarios. Crucially, individual monitoring actions which enable the robot to monitor the execution of the actions were designed and included, thus providing additional robustness.
In Software development, the always beta principle is used to successfully develop innovation based on early and continuous user feedback. In this paper we discuss how this principle could be adapted to the special needs of designing for the Smart Home, where we do not just take care of the software, but also release hardware components. In particular, because of the 'materiality' of the Smart Home one could not just make a beta version available on the web, but an essential part of the development process is also to visit the 'beta' users in their home, to build trust, to face the real world issues and provide assistance to make the Smart Home work for them. After presenting our case study, we will then discuss the challenges we faced and how we dealt with them.
Radio pulsars in relativistic binary systems are unique tools to study the curved space-time around massive compact objects. The discovery of a pulsar closely orbiting the super-massive black hole at the centre of our Galaxy, Sgr A⋆, would provide a superb test-bed for gravitational physics. To date, the absence of any radio pulsar discoveries within a few arc minutes of Sgr A⋆ has been explained by one principal factor: extreme scattering of radio waves caused by inhomogeneities in the ionized component of the interstellar medium in the central 100 pc around Sgr A⋆. Scattering, which causes temporal broadening of pulses, can only be mitigated by observing at higher frequencies. Here we describe recent searches of the Galactic centre region performed at a frequency of 18.95 GHz with the Effelsberg radio telescope.
In discussions of gambling addiction to specific games, the market size and the proceeds generated by the game are usually disregarded. Inclusion of these parameters results in a relativization of the picture of gambling addiction. A fundamental principle for such an analysis is the separation between absolute numbers and ratios, which is a common procedure in economic contexts.
Für die Durchführung größerer Projekte innerhalb des DLR ist es häufig notwendig, dass sich Wissenschaftler fachübergreifend in Themengebiete einarbeiten müssen. Im Rahmen dieser Einarbeitung führen Wissenschaftler Recherchen in fremden Fachbereichen durch. Das DLR hat zu diesem Zweck das Wissensportal KnowledgeFinder entwickelt. Dieses Framework setzt klassische Suchverfahren zum Auffinden von Informationen in beliebigen Datenbeständen ein. Wenn Wissenschaftler in fremden Fachbereichen recherchieren, dann fällt es ihnen aufgrund des oberflächlichen Einblicks oftmals schwer, zielgerichtet nach Informationen zu suchen. Die im KnowledgeFinder eingesetzten klassischen Suchverfahren, die auf textueller und struktureller Ähnlichkeit basieren, können bei diesen unspezifischen Suchanfragen nur bedingt beim Auffinden von relevanten Informationen helfen. Aufgrund von Mehrdeutigkeiten und unterschiedlichen Kontexten stoße solche Verfahren oftmals an ihre Grenzen. Semantische Technologien haben zum Ziel diesen Mangel zu beheben. Hier wird neben der textuellen und strukturellen Ähnlichkeit zusätzlich die Dimension der Bedeutung betrachtet. In dieser Masterthesis wurde untersucht, ob die Suchergebnisqualität des KnowledgeFinder durch den Einsatz semantischer Technologien verbessert werden kann. Innerhalb einer Machbarkeitsstudie wurde dazu das KnowledgeFinder Framework um semantische Suchverfahren erweitert. Diese Verfahren sollen die fachübergreifende Recherche von DLR-Wissenschaftlern erleichtern, indem sie ihnen helfen, passende Suchergebnisse in den entsprechenden Fachbereichen zu finden.
Internet, Soziale Netzwerke, Spiele, Smartphones, DVDs, digitaler Rundfunk und digitales Fernsehen funktionieren nur deshalb, weil zu ihrer Entwicklung und Anwendung mathematisch abgesicherte Verfahren zur Verfügung stehen. Dieses Buch vermittelt Einsichten in grundlegende Konzepte und Methoden der Linearen Algebra, auf denen diese Verfahren beruhen. Am Beispiel fehlertoleranter Codierung wird einführend gezeigt, wie diese Konzepte und Methoden in der Praxis eingesetzt werden, und am Beispiel von Quantenalgorithmen, die möglicherweise in Zukunft eine Rolle spielen, wird deutlich, dass die Lineare Algebra zeitinvariante Konzepte, Methoden und Verfahren bereitstellt, mit denen IT-Technologien konzipiert, implementiert, angewendet und weiterentwickelt werden können. Wegen seiner didaktischen Elemente wie Vorgabe von Lernzielen, Zusammenfassungen, Marginalien und einer Vielzahl von Übungen mit Musterlösungen eignet sich das Buch nicht nur als Begleitlektüre zu entsprechenden Informatik- und Mathematik-Lehrveranstaltungen, sondern insbesondere auch zum Selbststudium.
Logiken, Mengen, Relationen, Funktionen, Induktion und Rekursion sind grundlegende mathematische Konzepte und Methoden, die in allen Bereichen der Informatik für die Beschreibung von Problemen und deren Lösung benötigt werden. The simulation of fluid flows is of importance to many fields of application, especially in industry and infrastructure. The modelling equations applied describe a coupled system of non-linear, hyperbolic partial differential equations given by one-dimensional shallow water equations that enable the consistent implementation of free surface flows in open channels as well as pressurised flows in closed pipes. The numerical realisation of these equations is complicated and challenging to date due to their characteristic properties that are able to cause discontinuous solutions.

The Java Virtual Machine (JVM) executes the compiled bytecode version of a Java program and acts as a layer between the program and the operating system. The JVM provides additional features such as Process, Thread, and Memory Management to manage the execution of these programs. The Garbage Collection (GC) is part of the memory management and has an impact on the overall runtime performance because it is responsible for removing dead objects from the heap. Currently, the execution of a program needs to be halted during every GC run. The problem of this stop-the-world approach is that all threads in the JVM need to be suspended. It would be desirable to have a thread-local GC that only blocks the current thread and does not affect any other threads. In particular, this would improve the execution of multi-threaded Java programs. An object that is accessible by more than one thread is called escaped. It is not possible to thread-locally determine if escaped objects are still alive so that they cannot be handled in a thread-local GC. To gain significant performance improvements with a thread-local GC, it is therefore necessary to determine if it is possible to reliably predict if a given object will escape. Experimental results show that the escaping of objects can be predicted with high accuracy based on the line of code the object was allocated from. A thread-local GC was developed to minimize the number of stop-the-world GCs. The prototype implementation delivers a proof-of-concept that shows that this goal can be achieved in certain scenarios.
Grailog embodies a systematics to visualize knowledge sources by graphical elements. Its main benefit is that the resulting visual presentations are easier to read for humans than the original symbolic source code. In this paper we introduce a methodology to handle the mapping from Datalog RuleML, serialized in XML, to an SVG representation of Grailog, also serialized in XML, via eXtensible Stylesheet Language Transformations (XSLT) 2.0/XML; the SVG is then rendered visually by modern Web browsers. This initial mapping is realized to target Grailog's "fully node copied" normal form. Elements can thus be translated one at a time, separating the fundamental Datalog-to-SVG translation concern from the concern of merging node copies for optimal (hyper)graph layout and avoiding its high computational complexity in this online tool. The resulting open source Grailog Knowledge-Source Visualizer (Grailog KS Viz) supports Datalog RuleML with positional relations of arity n>1. The on-the-fly transformation was shown to run on all recent major Web browsers and should be easy to understand, use, and extend.
We developed a scene text recognition system with active vision capabilities, namely: auto-focus, adaptive aperture control and auto-zoom. Our localization system is able to delimit text regions in images with complex backgrounds, and is based on an attentional cascade, asymmetric adaboost, decision trees and Gaussian mixture models. We think that text could become a valuable source of semantic information for robots, and we aim to raise interest in it within the robotics community. Moreover, thanks to the robot’s pan-tilt-zoom camera and to the active vision behaviors, the robot can use its affordances to overcome hindrances to the performance of the perceptual task. Detrimental conditions, such as poor illumination, blur, low resolution, etc. are very hard to deal with once an image has been captured and can often be prevented. We evaluated the localization algorithm on a public dataset and one of our own with encouraging results. Furthermore, we offer an interesting experiment in active vision, which makes us consider that active sensing in general should be considered early on when addressing complex perceptual problems in embodied agents.
Switched power electronic subsystems are widely used in various applications. A fault in one of their components may have a significant effect on the system’s load or may even cause a damage. Therefore, it is important to detect and isolate faults and to report true faults to a supervisory system in order to avoid malfunction of or damage to a load. If, in a model-based approach to fault detection and isolation of hybrid systems, switching devices are considered as ideal switches then some equations must be reformulated whenever some devices have switched. In this paper, a fixed causality bond graph representation of hybrid system models is used, i.e., computational causalities assigned according to the Standard Causality Assignment Procedure (SCAP) are independent of system modes of operation. The latter are taken into account by transformer moduli mi(t) ∈ {0, 1} ∀t ≥ 0 in a unique set of equations of motion. In a case study, this approach is used for fault diagnosis in a three-phase full-wave rectifier. Residuals of Analytical Redundancy Relations (ARRs) holding for all modes of operations and serving as fault indicators are computed in an offline simulation as part of a DAE system by using a bond graph model of the faulty system instead of the real one and by coupling it to a bond graph of the healthy system by means of residual sinks.
Reactive oxygen species and the bacteriostatic and bactericidal effects of isoconazole nitrate

BACKGROUND
Propionic acidemia is an inherited disorder caused by deficiency of propionyl-CoA carboxylase. Although it is one of the most frequent organic acidurias, information on the outcome of affected individuals is still limited.
STUDY DESIGN/METHODS
Clinical and outcome data of 55 patients with propionic acidemia from 16 European metabolic centers were evaluated retrospectively. 35 patients were diagnosed by selective metabolic screening while 20 patients were identified by newborn screening. Endocrine parameters and bone age were evaluated. In addition, IQ testing was performed and the patients' and their families' quality of life was assessed.
RESULTS
The vast majority of patients (>85%) presented with metabolic decompensation in the neonatal period. Asymptomatic individuals were the exception. About three quarters of the study population was mentally retarded, median IQ was 55. Apart from neurologic symptoms, complications comprised hematologic abnormalities, cardiac diseases, feeding problems and impaired growth. Most patients considered their quality of life high. However, according to the parents' point of view psychic problems were four times more common in propionic acidemia patients than in healthy controls.
CONCLUSION
Our data show that the outcome of propionic acidemia is still unfavourable, in spite of improved clinical management. Many patients develop long-term complications affecting different organ systems. Impairment of neurocognitive development is of special concern. Nevertheless, self-assessment of quality of life of the patients and their parents yielded rather positive results.
Issues in an issue tracking system contain different kinds of information like requirements, features, development tasks, bug reports, bug fixing tasks, refactoring tasks and so on. This information is generally accompanied by discussions or comments, which again are different kinds of information (e.g. social interaction, implementation ideas, stack traces or error messages). We propose to improve automatic categorization of this information and use the categorized data to support software engineering tasks. We want to obtain improvements in two different ways. Firstly, we want to obtain algorithmic improvements (e.g. natural language processing techniques) to retrieve and use categorized auxiliary data. Secondly we want to utilize multiple task-based categorizations to support different software engineering tasks.
Within an elementary decision of March 28th, 2006 the German Federal Constitutional Court implemented the following: “According to the status quo of research it is certain, that gambling and bets can result in morbid addictive behaviour. ... However different gambling products exhibit different addictive potentials.” Up to now a specific identification of the addictive potential of a concrete gambling product was nearly impossible. This being said, the Wissenschaftliches Forum Glücksspiel (Gambling Scientific Forum) developed a globally applicable assessment tool to measure and evaluate the risk potential of gambling products.
AsTERiG is developed by the Gambling Scientific Forum in the years 2006-2010. A structural mapping of mutations causing succinyl-CoA:3-ketoacid CoA transferase (SCOT) deficiency

Succinyl-CoA:3-ketoacid CoA transferase (SCOT) deficiency is a rare inherited metabolic disorder of ketone metabolism, characterized by ketoacidotic episodes and often permanent ketosis. To date there are ~20 disease-associated alleles on the OXCT1 gene that encodes the mitochondrial enzyme SCOT. SCOT catalyzes the first, rate-limiting step of ketone body utilization in peripheral tissues, by transferring a CoA moiety from succinyl-CoA to form acetoacetyl-CoA, for entry into the tricarboxylic acid cycle for energy production. We have determined the crystal structure of human SCOT, providing a molecular understanding of the reported mutations based on their potential structural effects. Cost efficient energy monitoring in existing large buildings demands for autonomous indoor sensors with low power consumption, high performance in multipath fading channels and economic implementation. Good performance in multipath fading channels can be achieved with noncoherent chaotic modulation schemes such as chaos on-off keying (COOK) or differential chaos shift keying (DCSK). While COOK stands out in the area of power consumption, DCSK excels when it comes to its performance in noisy and multipath fading channels. This paper evaluates a combination of both schemes for autonomous indoor sensors. The simulation results show 50% less power consumption than DCSK and more than 3dB SNR gain in Rayleigh fading channels at BER=10-3 as compared to COOK, making it a promising candidate for low power transmission in autonomous wireless indoor sensors. We further present an enhanced version of this scheme showing another 1 dB SNR improvement, but at 25% less power consumption than DCSK.
Providing universal access to social protection and health systems for all members of society, including the poor and vulnerable, is increasingly considered crucial to international development debates. This is the first book to explore from an interdisciplinary and global perspective the reforms of social protection systems introduced in recent years by many governments of low and middle-income countries.
Hochschulen beschäftigen sich mit der Frage, wie Lehrveranstaltungen und Forschungsprojekte durch den Einsatz digitaler Werkzeuge und Lernplattformen begleitet und ergänzt werden können. Bibliotheken spielen hierbei häufig eine tragende Rolle, auf ganz unterschiedliche Art und Weise: Als Content-Entwickler und -Provider, als Supportstelle oder als E-Learning-Beratungsstelle für Lehrende und Studierende.
Der Wechsel vom Lehren zum aktiven Lernen kann durch studentische Projekte gelingen. Studierende wenden das bisher vermittelte Wissen an und erleben dadurch Ihre eigene Handlungskompetenz während der Bearbeitung einer berufsnahen Aufgabenstellung. Lernziel ist hierbei die Steigerung der Handlungskompetenz, bestehend aus Fach-, Sozial-, Methoden- und Individualkompetenz durch die Aufgabenbearbeitung im Team. Insbesondere wird dabei auch Wert auf die Vermittlung und Erfahrung von Skills, wie z. B. Kooperationsfähigkeit, Kommunikationsverhalten und Arbeitsorganisation gelegt.
The device (10) has a handrail (18) provided with an optical contactless monitoring device formed as an active sensor system, where the monitoring device is arranged in a region of a guide (14) of the handrail at a front base (16) of an escalator (12) or a moving pavement. The monitoring device has two transmission paths (28, 30) with wavelength bands that are different from each other, where one of the paths includes the handrail. Ratio or difference between signals of the paths is used for recognizing foreign bodies e.g. hands of adults and children.
This paper presents recent research on an active multispectral scanning sensor capable of classifying an object's surface material in order to distinguish between different kinds of materials and human skin. The sensor itself has already been presented in previous work and can be used in conjunction with safeguarding equipment at manually-fed machines or robot workplaces, for example. This work shows how an extended sensor system with advanced material classifiers can be used to provide additional value by distinguishing different materials of work pieces in order to suggest different tools or parameters for the machine (e.g. the use of a different saw blade or rotation speed at table saws). Additionally, a first implementation and evaluation of an active multispectral camera system addressing new safety applications is described. Both approaches intend to increase the productivity and the user's acceptance of the sensor technology.

Anders verhält es sich mit möglichen Lösungswegen. Frau Kramer stellt in ihrem Werk ein mögliches Lösungskonzept, die lebensphasenorientierten Personalpolitik vor. Sie zeigt anhand praxisnaher Beispiele zwei unterschiedliche Konzepte auf.Die Idee dahinter: Die traditionelle begrenzte Sichtweise der Personalpolitik mit dem Fokus auf die ersten 20 Jahre des Berufslebens wird bei der lebensphasenorientierten Personalpolitik um die gesamte Lebensarbeitszeit erweitert.
Generating and visualizing large areas of vegetation that look natural makes terrain surfaces much more realistic. However, this is a challenging field in computer graphics, because ecological systems are complex and visually appealing plant models are geometrically detailed. This work presents Silva (System for the Instantiation of Large Vegetated Areas), a system to generate and visualize large vegetated areas based on the ecological surrounding. Silva generates vegetation on Wang-tiles with associated reusable distributions enabling multi-level instantiation. This paper presents a method to generate Poisson Disc Distributions (PDDs) with variable radii on Wang-tile sets (without a global optimization) that is able to generate seamless tilings. Because Silva has a freely configurable generation pipeline and can consider plant neighborhoods it is able to incorporate arbitrary abiotic and biotic components during generation. Based on multi-levelinstancing and nested kd-trees, the distributions on the Wang-tiles allow their acceleration structures to be reused during visualization. This enables Silva to visualize large vegetated areas of several hundred square kilometers with low render times and a small memory footprint.
Introduction: Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are important in tissue remodelling. Here we investigate the role of collagenase-3 (MMP-13) in antibody-induced arthritis.
Methods: For this study we employed the K/BxN serum-induced arthritis model. Arthritis was induced in C57BL/6 wild type (WT) and MMP-13-deficient (MMP-13–/–) mice by intraperitoneal injection of 200 μl of K/BxN serum. Arthritis was assessed by measuring the ankle swelling. During the course of the experiments, mice were sacrificed every second day for histological examination of the ankle joints. Ankle sections were evaluated histologically for infiltration of inflammatory cells, pannus tissue formation and bone/cartilage destruction. Semi-quantitative PCR was used to determine MMP-13 expression levels in ankle joints of untreated and K/BxN serum-injected mice.
Results: This study shows that MMP-13 is a regulator of inflammation. We observed increased expression of MMP-13 in ankle joints of WT mice during K/BxN serum-induced arthritis and both K/BxN serum-treated WT and MMP-13–/– mice developed progressive arthritis with a similar onset. However, MMP-13–/– mice showed significantly reduced disease over the whole arthritic period. Ankle joints of WT mice showed severe joint destruction with extensive inflammation and erosion of cartilage and bone. In contrast, MMP-13–/– mice displayed significantly decreased severity of arthritis (50% to 60%) as analyzed by clinical and histological scoring methods.
Conclusions: MMP-13 deficiency acts to suppress the local inflammatory responses. Therefore, MMP-13 has a role in the pathogenesis of arthritis, suggesting MMP-13 is a potential therapeutic target.

Improving Robustness of Task Execution Against External Faults Using Simulation Based Approach

Robots interacting in complex and cluttered environments may face unexpected situations referred to as external faults which prohibit the successful completion of their tasks. In order to function in a more robust manner, robots need to recognise these faults and learn how to deal with them in the future. We present a simulation-based technique to avoid external faults occurring during execusion releasing actions of a robot. Our technique utilizes simulation to generate a set of labeled examples which are used by a histogram algorithm to compute a safe region. A safe region consists of a set of releasing states of an object that correspond to successful performances of the action. This technique also suggests a general solution to avoid the occurrence of external faults for not only the current, observable object but also for any other object of the same shape but different size.
Die Greenpocket GmbH hat in Kooperation mit der Hochschule Bonn-Rhein-Sieg eine Studie zum Thema Smart Home durchgeführt. Wie die Onlinebefragung zeigt, ist die Zahlungsbereitschaft für Smart-Home-Lösungen bei jungen, technikaffinen Verbrauchern, den Digital Natives, höher ls bisher angenommen. Insgesamt umfasste der Online-Fragebogen 32 Fragen. Teile der Befragung wurden nach dem Kano-Modell konzipiert. Zu den Ergebnissen der Befragung: Der Steuerung über das Smartphone kommt eine wichtige Rolle zu. Insgesamt ist die Qualität wichtiger als ein niedriger Preis. Langfristig sollte ein Smart Home die Gewohnheiten des Nutzers automatisch erkennen und berücksichtigen können. Die Anbindung an soziale Netzwerke wird hingegen kritisch beurteilt. Als wünschenswert wird die Steuerung von Haushalts- und Elektrogeräten in Abhängigkeit vom Strompreis empfunden.
Unternehmen sind in verstärktem Ausmaß Veränderungen der Umwelt ausgesetzt. Mit zunehmender Globalisierung und der wachsenden Komplexität der Wertschöpfungsnetze steigt die Anzahl der Veränderungen, ihre Geschwindigkeit und Stärke und zwingt die Unternehmen schneller und öfter zu zeitnahen (Re-)Aktionen. Die Planung erlaubt es mögliche Entwicklungen gedanklich vorwegzunehmen und frühzeitig rationale richtungweisende Entscheidungen zu treffen, Potenziale zu erschließen, zu sichern und zu nutzen sowie Risiken zu erkennen, zu analysieren und zu minimieren. Die Kontrolle der Entscheidungen erlaubt eine Ursachenanalyse der Abweichungen zwischen Planung und Realität. Kontrolle bildet damit die Basis für Lernprozesse in Unternehmen.
Traffic simulations are generally used to forecast traffic behavior or to simulate non-player characters in computer games and virual environments. These systems are usually modeled in such a way that traffic rules are strictly followed. However, rule violations are a common part of real-life traffic and thus should be integrated into such models.
In this paper, we describe an approach that enables an autonomous system to infer the semantics of a command (i.e. a symbol sequence representing an action) in terms of the relations between changes in the observations and the action instances. We present a method of how to induce a theory (i.e. a semantic description) of the meaning of a command in terms of a minimal set of background knowledge. The only thing we have is a sequence of observations from which we extract what kinds of effects were caused by performing the command. This way, we yield a description of the semantics of the action and, hence, a definition.
